Government trailing a new tack on Covid? 16:23 - Feb 13 with 4477 viewssnudge27

I see that both Hancock and Johnson have today made comments about 'living with Covid as we do the flu', and how humanity will 'adapt to Covid'.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-56050119

Are these fools really suggesting going down the route of giving up on eradicating the thing, and just trying to do 'business as usual' far too soon (again)?

I think you're reading too much into that. We'd love to eradicate it but with vaccines and new treatments etc it could be managed long term if eradication isn't possible.

Truly impaired.

It's never going to be eradicated - they're right in that, unfortunately.

Fairly obvious to most sensible people that Covid is unlikely to be totally eradicated.
But if you want to use it as another stick to beat the government with then crack on.

Vaccines allow us to live with a great many diseases and viruses that used to kill a large percentage of the world's population.

This seems to be another of the unnecessary negative posts that appear on here far too often.

It was always a discussion which was going to be had, just a question of timing.

To the contrary I think its the most sensible thing they have come out with for a while.

Eradicating the disease completely or pursuing a zero Covid deaths strategy is just not realistic, unless that is you fancy being locked down forever more?

Apologies for agreeing with the scientists on this one. You clearly know much better...

Given how abysmally these charlatans have handled the issue so far, and how the deaths of three of my closest relatives could have been avoided if we'd had competent leadership in charge, you'll have to excuse my being deeply cynical of anything that comes out of their mouths. Doubly so when the experts are declaring what a bad idea such a move would be.

But hey, you do you, and carry on with your usual stance of belittling anyone who doesn't share your point of view.

There'll be an acceptable level of annual deaths directly attributable to covid, just as there has been for flu...as long as this number stays roughly the same every year and is mostly old people, life will roll on

Realistically, it's probably here to stay. Doesn't mean we shouldn't seek to reduce harm and incidence and we're not.

Isn't flu deaths something like 20000 per year?

I'm sorry for your losses but, in terms of moving forward, I think you're combining two points which shouldn't be declined.

Covid is around for good and we just have to get into a position where we can handle it circulating. There is a big question on when restrictions should start to be lifted, I agree with that.

Sorry for your losses but you're not alone in losing family and friends to this virus. We have all lost love ones over the past year.

Who are these scientists that you are agreeing with? Patrick Vallance, the UK's Chief Scientific Adviser, has been saying for some time that we will never fully ericaite the virus and instead will have to live with Covid as we do the flu, and that we will have to adapt.

"Giving evidence to the joint Commons and Lords National Security Strategy Committee on Monday, Sir Patrick said that only one disease - smallpox - had ever been completely eradicated.

He said that in future, treating Covid-19 may become more like seasonal flu.

"I think it is unlikely that we will end up with a truly sterilising vaccine that completely stops infection," he said".

and Deputy Chief Medical officer Jonathan Van-Tam:

Asked whether, in time, an annual jab will be required against a different strain, as happens with flu, Prof Van-Tam said: "I can't say it will be every year yet, but I can say that I don't think we will ever eradicate coronavirus."

So far from knowing much better tan the scientists, I'm very much on board with their thinking on this.

It took decades to eradicate smallpox, even regionally in Europe, never mind globally. That and rinderpest in cattle are the only two viruses we have managed to get rid of in the wild.

Of necessity, we're going to have to live with Covid-19 to a greater or lesser extent (hopefully largely suppressed and, eventually, treatable) for some time. Always assuming the mutations don't become too diverse for a single vaccine system to handle.

The economy can't stand an unending lockdown lasting for years, neither can the education system. Let alone public morale. There is going to have to be some sort of middle way struck, keeping the disease suppressed while still allowing things to function to some extent.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?
