It is also harder to keep hold of youngsters good enough to go and play in the Prem. How many in recent seasons have we lost? Knight to Man C, Brown to Chelsea and one to Arsenal iirc.

Although, from what I understand, none of them have kicked on as expected.

Bryan Klug on 18:12 - May 24 with 2853 views | ElephantintheRoom | You could take the alternative view that for the entire 12 years of Evans' tenure there was no link between the academy and the first team - and no real effort go get all teams palying the same way. The only genuinely good young players in recent times, Wickham and Rhodes came out of left field via a coaching appointment and an army move. As other have said it is all but impossible to keep good schoolkids any more - and anyone good enough to reach the first team will be lured away by clubs further up the food chain. The structure of the academy system is against Ipswich as well - there just arent many young footballers in the North Sea. The key interest in the academy from the new owners could be the land...the investment fund manager's big interest IS property investment....its just about the only asset the club has got - although it is now possible to sell schoolkids for a million - so they might be genuine.

Is this really fair? Cook was in there celebrating with the U18s. He might be unimpressed by the recent graduates but that's another story.

Your last paragraph is nonsense. If their interest is only asset stripping land, they wouldn’t have given a chunk to Evans as part of the deal and would have bought a club that owned the land in which its football ground stands. Maybe somebody like your lot up the road.

The academy Under 18s reached the semi final of the FA Youth Club and lost very narrowly to Liverpool. They can’t be that bad.

He's letting anyone with a pulse go, so it's hardly a damning reference for the academy.

True, and I definitely do not want Klug to go, but there does seem to be something not quite right with our youth system. We produce good kids when they play against other kids, but we have produced pitifully few players that have gone on to play at the highest levels of the game. Since the famous Wright/Dyer/Bramble batch, it's been very thin pickings for two decades. For a club that is proud of our youth development, we don't actually develop many players that can perform beyond U23 level. Dyer himself was quite scathing about it when he gave that post math interview towards the end of last season.

He's not a manager who has used young academy players throughout his career or has any real track record in bringing players through, so that's to be expected

Players like those I think you are alluding to would either leave us quickly or never come to us in the first place. They would go to a PL academy or even a European one.

It would be interesting to see statistics of what every lower league player aged 25 (for example) was doing when they were 18. (How many were at prem academies, how many at smaller ones, how many were unattached to a league club?)
