New school to be built in Ipswich! on 13:44 - May 26 with 1514 views | StokieBlue | None of the comments have actually said why they object though. It's just woolly nonsense on various subjects, none of which seem to be to do with the actual building of a school. As for the rooftop playground, that isn't uncommon in London and I suspect New York as well. Not living in the town perhaps there is something I've missed but more schools with good quality resources is surely a good thing. SB [Post edited 26 May 2021 13:46]

Can you explain why given the context of a shrinking and unviable town centre and more people likely to be living in and around that area as more flats are created? SB

I'm not keen on that for an idea for kids. Children need space to run and let off steam, it might be a necessary compromise for huge urban areas like London and NYC, but there is space in and around Ipswich. They find it easily enough for out of town shopping schemes. I say that as someone who is not too happy about a 200 home development being dumped on my doorstep

Sounds lovely. | |

You won't find many schools in London with huge playing fields though and I suspect most playgrounds are smaller than what that proposal is showing. As you say though, the situation in places like London and Ipswich is different so there can be different solutions. The question is would anyone approve of a large school being built on the outskirts of Ipswich? What about the people needing a school locally living near the town centre? What should be done with the massive hulking department stores that are all now closed? Lots of questions and possibly not many answers at the moment. I think a lot of town centres are now in limbo nationally without much of a clue with what to do with all the buildings there. SB

Multi mixed race eh? They must be even worse than mixed race people then, with all that extra mixing.

I'm sure IBC would love to develop on the fringes of the town where there's plenty of open space - Babergh and Suffolk Coastal probably less keen on that! You can't just magic up large open plots of land in a town the size of Ipswich, and if there is one, people aren't going to be too happy to lose that open space.

Actually Babergh and Mid-Suffolk at least are very keen on it. The Ipswich Fringe is where they want to put most of their development.

Further to that the former Toys'R'Us and MotherCare stores at Copdock Mill Interchange were under consideration as a location for a school, and may still be.

You say that but would they be happy? They've been at it for years. Dumping their housing developments on the fringe of Ipswich but providing few little in the way of services, shifting the responsibility for that onto the population of Ipswich. Thorrington Park - where are the schools? Pinewood - where are the schools? Either way, any school built on the fringe of Ipswich isn't much use for the people living in the town centre of Ipswich. Not of public services.....why fund them when they can just put the burden on to Ipswich to do so!

Quite! The authority boundaries are a mess in Suffolk, and are a definite disadvantage for Ipswich in terms of growth and development. All they do is hinder the county's most populous and economically important area. The window of opportunity to change them has well and truly gone now though.

Will be a quite a shock to parents on, say, Christchurch Street when the school catchment changes their upcoming child’s school from Northgate to the town centre

The surrounding authorities just kill Ipswich with retail parks and housing with no public services - the bus routes are a mess unless you are on the 66 route out of Ipswich No joined up thinking and just attacks on the 'Labour run council' for not being able to stay on top of all the sh1t that gets dumped on them
