There is a far greater importance placed on this game by those north of the border than ever there is down here. As PG Wodehouse wrote
"It is never difficult to distinguish between a Scotsman with a grievance and a ray of sunshine."
We happen to be the most obvious target to vent that long held and nursed national grievance.
Otherwise, I do not believe there is anything in any national football rivalries that are not simply emneties between countries manifest on the pitch. |
I was in the Beagle with a project manager from Scotland once, we were entertaining guests from Belgium and India, two countries with their own internal conflicts and he was explaining the rivalry between Scotland and England to them.
His summary was
"The Scottish hate the English, and the English doont care"

Basically, everyone hates the English, you only have to look at Rugby where SA, AUS and NZ all have a big rivalry against each other, but when it comes to the crunch, they all want to beat England, same with the Welsh.

When I lived in Oz, they were always saying how beating the Poms was priority, same for the Kiwi's I met.
Same for the Welsh, you might find some island in Archipelago that are ambivalent towards us, but for the large majority beating the English is always number one. | |

I always like to see the home nations do well as long as England do better!
It's nice to beat Scotland, but I want to beat them only because their fans will bang on about it for ages. |
I like to see Wales do well, ok with Ireland and N Ireland, but detest Scotland and cheered when they lost the other day. I never used to feel that way, but their almost universal loathing of the English, I now hope they lose every game till the end of time. |  | | |
