The online nastiness is disgusting and should be looked into. The parents should use this as an example to the child as shes older of how there are just horrible people on the internet. I had a chuckle when the camera cut to her, quickly followed by a "don't worry, you'll win the next one". I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Schadenfreude is a valid emotion. I don't wish her or any Germans any harm, and I suspect the vast majority of people are the same.
The Jimmy Saville sort of stuff on the other hand is grim, perverse to think it, let alone say it. That being said, I really don't think it needs to be a cause. Go after the people that said the vile things by all means, but donating money to the family doesn't change anything. It's a young child who will have already moved on, and will be able to tell the tale of how she was the face of German disappointment when they lift the World Cup in a few years time. |  |
