Didn’t think much of Bailey Clements. That 4 key passes should’ve been far more. Too many times he just got to the position and whacked it somewhere in the areas hoping someone would be there. Him and Doncaien were poor for me.

The youngsters are definitely the positive out of the game. I am not sure how many minutes they will get between them in the first team this year though. Dobra in particular is cause for cheer - he's convinced Cook that he's worth keeping in the proper squad not the bomb squad, and that's more than can be said for our last "really good youngsters coming through". It will be a crying shame if this lot goes the way of Bishop, Dozzell, Downes, Lankester, Gibbs... Let's hope they don't. |  | | |

I'm not bothered about the cup/result but having at least another round would be useful for playing some of the youngsters, fringe players. Some of those who played tonight may not start 1st team game of football for quite some time now |  |

Cup games this season, especially the Papa John's games are just going to full of kids. That won't make them better. Getting someone like Idris or Dobra out into a top-end League Two will do them the world of good. I'd rather they both played 35+ games in L2 than 15+ in L1 with us. We are hampering their development if we aren't going to start them in the league, which I don't think we should. | |

Had the most key passes on the pitch tonight, that surprised me the most. 4 is a very high number in a 90 minute game, you won't see many League One players getting higher than that this season. To put it into context, Fraser had 4 key passes on Saturday. | |

Carabao Cup is the most unnecessary cup competition across the four English leagues. The only teams that take it seriously each season are L2 sides, bottom half L1 sides, and mid-table Prem sides. A nothing competition that is only used to showcase young players to scouts for loan deals. Cook has orchestrated 180 minutes of attacking football, against two sides putting 11 men behind the ball, and has been let down by 2 individuals who have gifted the opposition three goals. | |

Result’s important for me as it was an excellent opportunity to put on a good show in front of a home crowd who’ve not been allowed in for 18 months, build confidence through a win and get the new players used to Cook’s approach. In fairness it sounds as though those present did see a good game, so that’s ok. We failed on the other 2 points though. It’s a shame, but we move on. Obviously the League is more important but I think the cup can help with that rather than be seen as a hindrance (especially this early in the season and when we’ve had so many recent arrivals).
Ps. Agree with the spirit of the OP though, and recognising good performances of those coming through. [Post edited 10 Aug 2021 22:21]

Newport also put out a team of youngsters. Our 'first team' were almost beaten on Saturday by a team whose players were in L2 last season, and failed to beat another L2 team, Col Utd.
It is early days and we have time to develop as a squad. But games should be judged on how the team played, not by stuff that has no real relevance to the game, as it has no context whatsoever.

You can expect to win games, yet still not be angry or upset if you don't get the victory. Different story entirely if it was a league game, but it's not. Cook has already told us he cares about promotion, not a 2nd round tie at Barrow.
There's a certain club just over the border from us, that finished last season having played 49 games. 1 Carabao Cup game, 2 FA Cup games. Do you think their fans were upset that didn't get to the second round? No, because Daniel Farke promised them promotion and that was the clubs focus last season. | |

Think we will see a much 'stronger' side put out for the FA Cup, Cook has already admitted to wanting to do that. There are seasons where a cup run is necessary, like the constant stagnation under Keane and Jewell, and the last few years of McCarthy. We knew we weren't go up, and we had enough about us not to go down. That was the time for a couple of cup runs outside of the 2009 Semi Final.
It's a fine balance. Have to make a choice which route you want to take. For now, I think 3 competitons would suffice. Full strength in the league, couple of changes for the FA Cup, talented 23/18s not out on loan and fringe players in the Pizza trophy. | |

Not sure if you noticed, but of the 14 players used by Newport tonight, there were exactly 2 'youngsters' in Newport's team tonight?
Our 'first-team' were almost beaten by a former L2 side, who just so happened to beat a very strong Blackburn team tonight with a rotated team?
You take out Ndaba's poor lapse in concentration, don't think Newport tested our makeshift defence all game, despite having two premier league loanees and Saturday's goalscorer going forward? | |
