Suddenly Burton away is a BIG game according to some fans 12:30 - Aug 12 with 6568 views | 3_5_2 | The club have asked for patience, they are changing players (and in my view, with better ones) all the back room staff etc yet some fans are expecting us to be winning every game already Saturday will be tough (JFH has done a great job with little money there) but we are very much at the early stages of the process required and for me a draw and something from Cheltenham will set us up nicely for MK Dons 45 games in this to go !!

Suddenly Burton away is a BIG game according to some fans on 13:30 - Aug 12 by jayessess | What bed wetting? I'd be surprised if as many as 1 in every 1000 Town fans isn't still expecting us to have an excellent season. |
A fair point. Mainly a handful of cretins on twitter and FB making a lot of noise.

Suddenly Burton away is a BIG game according to some fans on 13:06 - Aug 12 by Illinoisblue | I get it, to a certain extent. But we essentially have to erase and forget last season. If we’re sitting here in November and talking about needing time to gel then we’ll have a right to be concerned. |
Oh yeah. If we go on a Keane/Hurst/Lambert-esque lengthy winless run then that's the time to start asking questions.

I see it being a real challenge and won't be reading too much into the result.

Suddenly Burton away is a BIG game according to some fans on 12:47 - Aug 12 by Asa | Any idea how many points the League Cup games are worth? Still two points for a win or is it three now like the league? It’s almost as if he was saving the players from fairly meaningless matches but having them as fit as possible for the ones that carry points. |
If that's his decision then don't ask fans for patience whilst the team 'gel' on the pitch then. Can't have it both ways. "We need the new guys on the pitch together to gel properly" *easy cup fixture comes up against Newport U23s* "Oh, no we won't have the new guys on the pitch together to gel properly"

You can have it both ways. Unless you’re suggesting that it can ‘gel’ after one cup match against Newport’s under 23’s as you’ve called them. Otherwise said gelling takes longer and presumably requires us to be able to overcome a number of sides and styles and approaches. Not just beat the kids from a lower league side.

Oh give it a rest. You've had the reasoning explained to you numerous times by numerous posters now. You basically just want a stick to beat Cook with. If he'd played the first team you'd be moaning about him risking them in a meaningless game.

Suddenly Burton away is a BIG game according to some fans on 12:47 - Aug 12 by Illinoisblue | All this bed wetting after ONE league game is quite amazing. I think the last decade has scarred us so much we have lost all perspective. |
I think it’s balance though - bed wetting certainly isn’t required but neither is the “Thank you for giving my club approach” approach after we’ve been turned over by a Newport team which had made eleven changes (yes, we ourselves had made ten). Hopefully we’re moving in the right direction but nothing has been proven either way yet.

What are you talking about man? We don’t even know what our best XI is, should we just stick the 11 that are available for the first game of the season in every remaining game just so they jel? We have 3 games in a week coming up, players aren’t fully match fit and injuries are a bigger risk at this stage of the season. The team selection for Newport doesn’t contradict anything.

Indeed. We can chalk the Newport game off as “one of those days” when we just can’t score but against the backdrop of staggeringly bad performances and results the last few years, plus the continued failure in cup games, it’s easy to lash out and moan. A win at Burton should calm everyone down.

Agree with this….. I do not doubt there is a ‘feel good factor’ at the moment and I appreciate there will be ups and downs. However, as a fairly ‘experienced’ Town fan, I think I have a right to expect us to beat Morecambe and Newport Reserves I am optimistic but also realistic. We’ve signed a load of players that, let’s face it, many of had never really heard of. Nothing is certain in football, but what never changes is that the team that wins the most matches, usually wins the league…. The team that has loads of potential and plays well in periods and snatches a draw usually finishes about 9th. We can purr as much as we want at Dobra getting the ball from the right back, going on a mazey run across the pitch 30 yards out, beating 4 players and then passing back to the left back, but in truth, I’d much rather he smashed home the chance he had 10 yards out, instead of hitting it straight at the keeper. As I say, I remain optimistic

Suddenly Burton away is a BIG game according to some fans on 12:51 - Aug 12 by chicoazul | We’ve won two of our last 11 competitive games. We are in an awful trot of form as a club. We need to start winning immediately. |
Well done for merging last season’s completely different team with this season. Tells a good story, that. How about we’ve only lost 2 league games in 12 and are unbeaten at home in the league since January? That’s a true statistic, but equally meaningless. I prefer 1 home game, 1 draw. I expected us to win, but at least we didn’t lose (MMs mantra). We have 45 games to play with a new team, so I prefer let’s give Cook a few games before breaking out the pitchforks and flaming torches. [Post edited 12 Aug 2021 15:10]

Who said anything about the team? I said the club. It’s just facts, and the last bit is my opinion. Cook needs results ASAP. I hope he will get them but I’m not sure he will on the basis of his entire tenure here so far.

Seriously - more exciting than when we won the UEFA Cup in 1981? More exciting than when we consistently fought for promotion season after season from the second tier, playing expansive, entertaining football to boot? Really?

I think he said the most exciting prospects since then rather than more exciting than then. I am torn between the idea that these players appear to be a cut above what is usual at this level and the possibility we may be wrong. Please don't let this be a false dawn.

It's reasonable to infer that if this is the most exciting time since the 70s then it is more exciting than all of the time between the 70s and now. If it was as exciting as the 80s, for example, rather than more exciting then he ought to have said this is the most exciting time since the 80s. Edit - and either way, I make him wrong. most exciting since the 1970s literally means "more exciting than anything that happened 1980 to Present". Does my head in when people on here say something with a clear, unambiguous meaning, then straight face say "where have I said that?" when you point out what they've said.

The most exciting group of prospects since the 70s. The prospects from the 70s were the players of the 80s. I do not agree with them being better prospects than the team that took us into Europe which would be the 90s. However, Legoman never stated they were better than the team of 81. I agree he is over-stating it, still.
