New lockdown looming for Scotland 09:12 - Aug 26 with 8262 viewsGlasgowBlue

Just three weeks after so called freedom day.

Cases have been doubling week on week for the last three weeks whilst cases in England have been either showing a very small increase or a drop like yesterday.

Big mistake not opening up when England did. Instead we have kicked the can down the road, missed the good weather and school holidays, and timed freedom day with the schools going back. Madness.

Looks like I’ll be closing again once again very shortly. Of course Niola will no doubt blame Boris.

It is a hard balancing act to get the unlocking right as you will always have the exit wave of cases. I think most people expected Englads numbers to absolutely rocket and they haven't really, which means the government might've got away with it a bit.

Indeed. Schools are already back in Scotland and that's led to a rise in cases, especially in the younger age bracket.

Yes. As I said in my op, the same week that we had "freedom day". Would have been better to have gone down the same route as England and relaxed the restrictions when the kids were off school and the weather was better. Crazy to have done both at the same time.

edit. Also worth noting that cases started to double compared with the day day the previous week, a couple of days before the kids went back to school. We also have mandatory mask wearing.

For all the abysmal decision making, to unlock when we did (in England) really was excellent.

If only people would follow advisory regarding to masks etc. It seems government are prepared to accept a certain level of new cases but sadly when that level is reached it is too late to avoid another lockdown.

Just to clarify my edit. The kids went back to school up here on Monday 16 August.

These are the figures for last day before they went back.

So we would be foolish to dismiss this trend as just being down to the schools re opening.

Removing the legal requirement for masks was madness. It's an effective measure that's very low-cost.

Looking at some of the other hotspots in the UK places that are popular for stay at home holidays seem to be faring badly.

We've just normalised the numbers. Whilst current cases aren't as high as some worse case forecasts, they're still right up there with some of the largest weekly case numbers we've seen. It's only the Jan and July peaks that were larger, and only over a relatively short period. All part of the learning to live with it strategy.

Scotland does look especially bad though - they're at their worse stage. NI also seem to be heading into record cases, and Wales' numbers are rising very steeply too.

I won't be surprised in the slightest if they have to consider lockdowns again for the whole of the UK, irrespective of what they're saying now.

You could easily conclude they are looking for so called herd immunity.

Cannot understand the attitude of if I don’t have to I won’t wear a mask. Fortunately there are still establishments that still insist on a mask. One place we frequent in Essex still checks temperatures.

'Herd immunity' is what they've been trying to do for the past 18 months, with disastrous results.

What they tend to forget is that we achieved herd immunity to smallpox, polio, etc, etc through vaccination and isolation to just letting people get these diseases willy-nilly.

Certainly slightly catchier than the current:

"I know the club insisted on mask wearing on the concourse as a condition of entry, but I am a massively self important twonk so the rules don't apply to me and I don't care who I put at risk through my wilful ignorance."

Also worth noting that the football season started a week earlier in Scotland, and if you watch Sportscene you will no doubt notice that mask wearing in the grounds rarely exceeds five percent of supporters. It's the Rangers support going over the top with celebrations of the title win all over again.

Think the increases started the w/c 16th August though - on 16th August the + rate per 1000 was much higher in England than Scotland, now it's higher in Scotland, but I think it's pretty likely that most of that is attributable to schools returning, not sure how/why it could be attributed to anything else.

But the doubling of cases started before the schools went back. I don't doubt that schools going back will be a factor. But there must be other reasons. One being the delay in lifting restrictions. To me, it seemed like kicking the can down the road. It would have been better to have lifted the restrictions at the beginning of the summer. Not the end.

Northern Ireland are top of the UK table btw with 91.91 cases per 100,000. They don't go back to school until 1 September.

Read an interesting BBC article a few days ago that suggested herd immunity by vaccination is impossible since the vaccines only attack a specific part of the virus thought then it was an advert for herd immunity.

Grandson starts High school next week, attended today and due to be tested. Suspect we will see a rise in new cases if that is happening everywhere picking up cases where no symptoms.

In some US states 1 in 4 being tested is positive while it around 1 in 20, or better in UK. We only hear what they want us to hear. They never disclose what percentage of positive tests are symptom free preferring to let us believe that the lower proportion of cases leading to hospital and/or death is due to the vaccine.

You can only trust stats if you know they are correctly reported.

The surveillance studies being run in conjunction with various academic institutions publish all of this data. You just need to make the effort to wade through it.....which few people bother to do. The positive impact of vaccination is clear to see.
