I'm bored with arguing about football, so how about we argue about music instead?
I'm going with Oasis. I didn't get them at the time, and whenever I hear them now I just don't understand how they became so big. I was listening to a 90s indie compilation whilst decorating earlier and this came on. Its like a big checklist of 90s indie cliches all cobbled together in one song - dreadful and cheesy lyrics, token string section to make it sound anthemic, key changes to add emotion, about 4 minutes too long. It sounds like something that Robbie Williams rejected.
These chorus lyrics though....
All around the world You've gotta spread the word Tell them what you've heard You're gonna make a better day All around the world You've gotta spread the word Tell 'em what you've heard You know it's gonna be okay
Also, these lyrics...
Na na na na Na na na na Na na na na Na na na Na na na na Na na na na Na na na na Na na na Na Na Na na na na na na na na Na na na na na na na na Na na na na na na na na Na na na na na na na na na na na na na

I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

Can I throw in a vote for "Hot Chocolate" as being vastly underrated - It started with a kiss actually took awful 80's synthesisers and made them sound good.
Hot Chocolate were a great singles band. Never made a good album though.

the beatles, they're alright, but they are rated extremely highly!
getting slightly more up to date, i'd nominate sleaford mods, a 2nd rate carter usm!
They are rated so highly because the shook up a very bland early 60's music scene, wrote their own songs and their music progressed at such a rapid rate. Just 4 years between recording Love Me Do to Strawberry Fields Forever.
There aren't many bands that don't cite them as a major influence. From the Jam to The Chemical Brothers. From Nirvana to Oasis. From ELO to Siouxsie and The Banshees. Their influence stretches over many decades and many genres.

i see their massive influence, without them, music would be in a much poorer place, but i'm talking about the actual music, it would have to be phenomenally better than it is to justify the hagiography!
much the same with velvet underground, massively influential, but their inspirees (is that a word?) have done much better music imo

You couldn't be more right. Absolute dreary sh1te. Talentless. The Mark Fish of the band world.
mark fish did some great early work, but his legacy (for us at least) was besmirched, by some appalling displays later on when he'd left his original team.
so, yes, morrissey without the racism, but not the smiths!

The EADt boys hate Queen too. Was there some sort of incident at the press box? Did rob Chandler lock you all in and perform some sort of Stars In Their Eyes thing as Freddie against your will?
Incredible.
I hadn't realised, we'll have to share our least favourite songs.

You don't become a racist over night. Morrissey is a far right supporter. That aside, The Smiths were just dreadful. Head in the oven stuff. Music is subjective, but come on, that lot really knew how to get you down. Would rather feel happy listening to music thanks.

I'd encourage you to listen to Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt Pepper and the White album plus the non album singles* in between each album (Daytripper/We can Work It Out, Paperback Writer/Rain, Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane, The Magical Mystery Tour E.P., Hey Jude/Revolution) in one sitting. Will only take you about 4 hours but you'll hear every band you've ever loved in that 3 year body of work. Alcohol or your stimulant of choice may also enhance your listening experience.

I'm not sure how anyone gets through the week without listening to I Want to Hold Your Hand or Yellow Submarine, tbh.

heard then all several times over, they're fine, just saying no band could live up to that hype!
do you agree that wings are the band that the beatles *could* have been?

If you can't see the obvious link between fundamentalist Islam and the fur industry, that's your problem, fella.

Any hip hop/grime/gangsta rap collectives. Along with people who are born and bred in Cornwall and have never been to a bigger city than Truro, and think they are sooooo gangster because they wear a baseball cap.
As for the OP, even as someone who likes Oasis I agree some of the lyrical content is really poor. All Around the World and Whatever are probably the most obvious examples of this. On top of that Noel Gallagher has admitted that he still doesn't have a clue what he wrote the likes of Champagne Supernova and Supersonic about. Lyrically I'd say Cigarettes and Alcohol is my favourite and I struggle to think of many more memorable choruses than Don't Look Back in Anger.
Not having the Arctic Monkeys suggestion from Herbivore though - absolutely criminal to put them on here. The fact Alex Turner had written the first album at the age of 19 is incredible, Favourite Worst Nightmare and AM are brilliant too.
My own nomination goes to Biffy Clyro. The music is average at best and the fact they usually perform topless makes me assume they're arseholes without having ever heard any of them speak.
