I'm bored with arguing about football, so how about we argue about music instead?
I'm going with Oasis. I didn't get them at the time, and whenever I hear them now I just don't understand how they became so big. I was listening to a 90s indie compilation whilst decorating earlier and this came on. Its like a big checklist of 90s indie cliches all cobbled together in one song - dreadful and cheesy lyrics, token string section to make it sound anthemic, key changes to add emotion, about 4 minutes too long. It sounds like something that Robbie Williams rejected.
These chorus lyrics though....
All around the world You've gotta spread the word Tell them what you've heard You're gonna make a better day All around the world You've gotta spread the word Tell 'em what you've heard You know it's gonna be okay
Also, these lyrics...
Na na na na Na na na na Na na na na Na na na Na na na na Na na na na Na na na na Na na na Na Na Na na na na na na na na Na na na na na na na na Na na na na na na na na Na na na na na na na na na na na na na

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun.
I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.
Fleetwood Mac are vastly superior and utterly dysfunctional, but a great band that Abba almost felt like they were trying to be - but ended up trading rock for guffy pop.

Has anybody added the smiths/morrissey to the list yet?
If not, why not?
Never. And even if Morrissey has done some good solo stuff he’s never been rated that highly on his own.
The Smiths is Morrissey + Marr + a specific place and time. And before Morrissey’s various idiosyncrasies and insecurities turned into racism, of course.

Just because you survived cholera and jazz that doesn't mean you can go around posting this sort of guff. You don't see me hammering Bach or your other childhood favourites do you?
As Carl Sagan said about the selection of music put on Voyager 'if it were all Bach, that would just be showing off'.

I actually like a lot of Morrissey's solo stuff, maybe even more so than some of the Smiths. But of course Marr's sound added so much to the Smiths. Never liked much of his solo stuff, oddly.
But now the LBF has disbanded, I am free to speak my own truth without fear of being kicked out!

Nothing good about Fleetwood Mac since the sublime Peter Green left.

Yeah, he’s done some great stuff. My point was more that he hasn’t exactly been “overrated” as a solo artist. I do think the Smiths were a lot more interesting and special though.
Marr is best as a collaborator I think. He was very good combining with The The for example.

I hope Angela Lansbury can get her money back on that makeover by the way.
[edit] Just seen that I took so long reading through the list of music that Facters rather unembellished post beat me to it - unless his disc was on the old Voyager 1 and mine is from the much more recent Voyager 2...

I was thinking much the same about New Order, so have not suggested them as overrated. But everything they have done leaves me a little underwhelmed when I think back to the vibrancy of hearing a new Joy Division song back in the early eighties.

In all fairness - I think a lot of bands we love have personal viewpoints or behaviours that would have us hating their members as people. I mean, John Lennon wanted us all to change the world - but what he didn't tell us is that he was a massive fan of Call of Duty.

Good point.
I actually like both. Although I really haven’t listened to much New Order has done in the past couple of decades ... felt like diminishing returns.
