Oxford at PR was my first home game in nearly a decade... 10:22 - Nov 16 with 3398 views | FBI | ...and it was football in a library, to coin a phrase. I sat in Churchman's (SAR) as I always have. When I went regularly in the 70s-80s it was a hotbed of singing and cheering but at the weekend it was bloody awful and I wished I was in the North Stand - the silence was embarrassing, especially for a 21K+ crowd. What's happened to everyone?

Spurs new ground sits within one big steaming urinal trough. Tottenham area always was and still is a dump.

I feel the main problem with PR is the acoustics, the noise generated by the SBRL doesn't travel due to it being a two tiered stand so the noise goes up but due to the second tier just reverberates back down rather than travel out. I feel the only way to rectify this would be to have a microphone system in place that picks the noise up from that end and then amplifies it around the ground. I would be great if other sections of the ground had a blue action contingent so to speak to help get the atmosphere going, I get that not everyone wants to sing/chant however there are others that do that aren't always able to get into the SBRL.

What really needs to happen to Sir Bob stand is for it to be redesigned so it's essentially one stand like the Kop or Spurs's new stand, but obviously that would come at a huge cost and not sure the benefit of generating better acoustics would warrant Gamechanger to spend that sort of cash.

They've spoken about doing bits and pieces to the ground so not out of the realms of possibility however they have said that the first stand to get any attention is the Cobbold stand as thats currently the oldest one. I know they are talking about completely redoing the PA system in the ground anyway so might be worthwhile adding in a system to amplify the sound coming from the lower Bobby Robson stand.

Oxford at PR was my first home game in nearly a decade... on 13:18 - Nov 16 by Vic | I think it’s that the same people are in Churchmans now as were there when you went as a younger person. Trouble is they are all (like you) 40 yrs older and no longer sing and chant as they used to. We badly need to excite and get in a new, younger generation. Thank goodness the omens are good and it may just be about to happen. Ps - Churchmans was ok in the SBR era (it’s where I used to stand, but been pretty much dead since then, especially since seating came in. [Post edited 16 Nov 2021 13:23]

It's by no means just an Ipswich thing. The people going to football are now older & wealthier than 40 years ago, when the core football fan was a 16-35 years old male. And all seat stadiums have made a huge difference. Even the once fearsome Den is a quiet, unintimidating place.
