In his MK Dons press conference he's just said...

"No I'm not going to Ipswich. I am sitting here in my MK Dons tracksuit, and I am taking training today, and I will be at the game tomorrow. So, I guess that is pretty definitive isn't it?"

Based on what though? Enlighten me

His career path so far - promoted through the academy coaching ranks at West Ham to U23 manager and then head hunted by one of the largest, most successful set ups in the world in City Group, where again he was promoted through the ranks. They do not employ and retain mugs. He ended up director of the academy in New York and then given a job at Lommel where he did very well. Now at MK Dons, where he's started brilliantly after coming in 2 games in, with no pre-season and a group of players he had no input in signing. All of this by the age of 36.

He's got a reputation as a fantastic, forward thinking young coach that is going places. If he carries on as he is at MK and gets them in the play-offs, he will likely be in the frame for Championship jobs sooner rather than later like Russell Martin was.

He has a very good reputation as a young coach with a great future ahead of him. He started here, but has developed his coaching portfolio since then.

So you've got the opportunity to leave your job for one with better prospects and that pays almost twice your salary. It's at SUPER BLUES LTD.

The paperwork isn't signed yet but the job is as good as yours.

Your boss at your current work (DON OK) comes up to you in the kitchen and says...'YOU'RE NOT THINKING OF LEAVING ARE YOU? FOR THAT SUPER BLUES LTD JOB EVERYONE IS EXCITED ABOUT?'

Do you say, 'AW FAIR COP BOSS, YOU GOT ME. I BETTER NOT TAKE IT NOW. I'LL STAY HERE.'

Or lie.

Spoiler: The answer is lie.

I bow down to your better knowledge.

However it is a massive risk based on half a season on english football for me.

TO be honest I don't care as long as it's someone who gets us promoted. I think lessons need to be learnt in that we get the "whole background staff" or don't bother, whoever it is.

It's definitely a risk but who isn't? Paul Cook was the most risk free, promotion slam dunk of an appointment you could possibly make, he was hugely backed and he struggled to get us going!

If you were hypothetically to rule out both Ryan Lowe & Liam Manning, which certainly is a possibility - you would be left with a very very depressing list indeed.

Think Lowe’s on his way to Preston.

It's very present tense i.e. TODAY I'm sitting here and in my tracksuit for training so self-evidently not off to Ipswich - but tomorrow might be another day!

Precisely this. Unfortunately you can't appoint someone's past achievements, and the most experienced manager or the manager with the best CV isn't always necessarily the best fit for a particular job. Nobody could have foreseen Cook doing so badly here but for whatever reason it just didn't happen here for him. We need to make sure the next appointment is the right fit irrespective of what their CV might look like.

But as I said, he didn't have his backup team and seemed to fail miserably without them. The backroom staff we had clearly weren't up to much.

Personally there is bigger levels of risk and hiring someone with 20 games or so experience in England is a high risk. Are these new owners going to take on a big risk, or pay a bit more and get a less risk appointment?

I dont know! haha

Take your point, thanks. So I'll just nimbly reposition that thought to point out how the previous M.K. manager, and, by extension, managers in general, can dampen down speculation!

He did but it went wrong defensively and he didn't seem to know how to stop it. Game after game of doing the same thing and expecting things to go differently.

I think the key point to our next appointment is the coaching team, we dont just need a manager with different ideas but who has a good coaching team and a assistant manager that can guide the decisons being made something Cook lacked .

Defensively? He overhauled the defence and it was much better. And the weak link (the left) has seen more change than anywhere else

But I think trying similar stuff and not knowing how to change things/get better results does apply in the midfield to attack area. That became a bit of a conundrum so hope McGreal or whoever can maybe see something else with fresh eyes.

Not sure that's such a bad thing.

From looking at the MK Dons forum they seem to rate him based on early promising signs but think the jury is still out. I think some were getting a bit carried away with the idea of him.

TWTD is proof that your research methodology is flawed, though! :)

Although we conceded 30 goals in 20 games under Cook and even recently we've shown propensity to give away a couple of goals even when not under immense pressure. I think the fact there's a legitimate debate about whether the defence or the attacking areas are more dysfunctional is a measure of just how far off we were from being a fully functional side under Cook. For what it's worth I don't disagree that the midfield/attack frequently looked disjointed, but the defence didn't look too robust either.

Warnock, Pearson, Allardyce, Appleton, Neil, Carrick

Obviously some of those might be unrealistic. I just really don't think it's going to take that much to get us up if we get a manager with even basic ability.

I think we need someone to come in and drill us defensively while letting the attacking 4-5 worry about scoring the goals.

Famous last words etc but honestly, this squad is head and shoulders above most if not all in this division. I think we can make the play offs and as long as we get a manager who keeps us solid while letting the more creative players do their jobs we should be fine.

I've been wrong before...

Allardyce??! 😱

Nah, not really. For a side with little midfield cover we’re OK. Individual mistakes at the wrong time have been an issue but nothing systemic really since Walton, Donacien, Nsiala and Edmundson have emerged as first choice. Even with whoever is playing left.

Our problems even overall defensive ones by not keeping the ball up the pitch and presssuring the opposition seem to revolve around the second CM and struggling to get the balance right in the 3. There have been massive variations in our effectiveness there from game to game.

Yes, it's a very canny answer and a very short time window in which he's actually saying he's committed to MK Dons. Basically until the end of the game tomorrow.

*If that was what he said.

**It wasn't. But my conclusions are correct because Russel Martin said this and then left the next day.

Disagree, for me the defence has continued to be an issue, albeit a less catastrophic one than at the start of the season. Issues all over the pitch really.
