Saturday's game feels a bit like Cheltenham 2020 09:13 - Dec 16 with 7370 views | hype313 | In that I feel very uneasy about going, in fact I'm not going to go. Can just see it being a situation where it's a mass spreader event. Personally, I Think it might be wise to give it a wide berth. [Post edited 16 Dec 2021 9:35]

Saturday's game feels a bit like Cheltenham 2020 on 17:52 - Dec 17 with 1263 views | nshearman1 | Very very sadly I've decided to pull out, along with my son. Living in Bristol, we only occasionally get to Portman Road, we'd got great seats, was going to be our Big Day Out with a packed stadium, owners, the lot. But I just feel we can't risk it. I know now it will be a great game with a 4-3 win to Town in the 95th minute.

I feel your pain. I'm doing the same. Was looking forward to it despite all the manager stuff and terrible form. Fingers crossed we get 3 points and set something up for the new managerial team and you have a fantastic and safe Christmas to vindicate your decision.

I've bitten and will spell it out for you. The concourses etc will be busier because there are more people The toilets will be busier because there is more people You will queue longer (if that is possible) at the kisoks because there are more people You will walk close yto and past more people, because you've guessed it, there is more people. Maybe it's me being thick but this all souns logical to me. "unless there are normally empty seats next to you" course there sually is for some people. The ground isn't normally full up every week? |
I don't know why you've suddenly turned angry and rude. I'm not a know-it-all I'm just going on logic when I say you're not guaranteed to come into contact with someone with Covid. That was my point in this thread. I've already stated I was referring to SBRL where I sit and can't comment on other parts of the ground. But the concourse and toilets won't be much busier than they were every other home game, because they can't be. There will be people to shuffle past just the same. The toilets will be rammed and you'll wait your turn, no different. You can't physically get more people in the toilets. How is the queue being longer going to affect me? There will be one person in front of me and one behind regardless of how long it is. I'm not going to walk close to more people just because there are more people in the stadium. I'll walk from the pub to the ground and avoid bumping into people like I usually do. The risks are high, but as counter intuitive as it seems, I don't see them being much higher just because there's 10,000 more people. I'll still largely be coming into contact with the same people I usually do. Yes if you sit in a part of the stand that's usually empty then you're going to be more at risk but you're getting awfully pedantic and specific now, almost as if you're trying a bit too hard to find a way of beating me.

Do the old rules of transmission still apply? It's far more transmissible which means it spreads easier SOMEHOW. I have no idea specifically how but it has some sort of advantage that Delta didn't have. For those not going due to Covid, I admire you. For those who have looked at the facts and given it serious thought but decided to go, I admire you too. Hopefully all of the precautions will keep the vast majority safe.

The one thing I wish the EFL would do, in agreement with the clubs, is give free i-follow access to ticket holders so, if they feel they did not want to go due to the current situation, they can still watch at home. Prior to Omicron it wasn't such an issue (though the problem was still there) but now... My only concern by now going tomorrow is it could be the last match I could have a chance of attending in a while, if a lockdown is put in place. But I don't feel in a place where I can take the risk.

Saturday's game feels a bit like Cheltenham 2020 on 10:53 - Dec 17 by The_Flashing_Smile | Tone it down? You're the one trying to shame people into not going. You said, "Everyone that goes must go knowing that will be exposed to someone who is positive." That's demonstrably not true and scaremongering. The "crowd of that many people" is a red herring too. I won't be anywhere near 98% of that crowd. I won't even be near 98% of the people in the North Stand. As I said, they're not all in the same room all mingling with each other. Yes there is a risk and people should weigh up if it's worth it (and take all the necessary precautions such as masks and not congregating)... but to say EVERYONE who goes will be exposed to someone who's positive is nonsense. |
To offer a Priti Patel apology - I'm sorry if you feel shamed, or scared, or indeed mongered. The risk is not just high, it is significantly higher. For the sake of any vulnerable people we're meeting up with over Christmas, you have to err on the side of caution and assume you will be exposed to a positive case. There will be people who are asymptomatic or have false negative test result at the match. I don't think that is a particularly outlandish reading of where we are at the moment. If people think that is a risk worth taking, then that is up to them. I suppose it is up to your interpretation of risk and what is deemed to be exposure. You appear to be able to give your risk/exposure a score of 2% which I think is tad naive, but I am risk-averse. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Without wanting to get into the argument, I'll just point out that all your calculations and assumptions are based on delta. It's highly unlikely they will hold true for Omicron given the R is about 5 times higher even with mask restrictions etc. SB

Don't be so precious. Not angry and not trying to be rude. Just trying to get you to understand that what you're saying is incorrect and getting you to understand a simple concept? The more people there, the more chance you have of catching it. You can't control other people and you don't know who has it etc. In simple terms, you are saying if there is 2000 people there, or 28000, there is no difference? Personally its simple maths but maybe i'm not getting it. I get this is extreme but its the same principle. Where you are is irrelevant. too. There is more people in the Upper, which means there is more passing traffic in the concourses below? I'm not sure what you can't understand unless you think you have to be near someone for 15 minutes+ to catch it? which again would be factually wrong. you could be walking past and someone sneezes on you, or coughs on you. "Im guessing you're one of these know-it-alls... will spell it out for you." Not trying to be rude?! And no I haven't remotely suggested 2000 is the same as 28,000. WTF is wrong with people not being able to read what I actually wrote in this thread? I give up.

An old friend who went on a complimentary/guest ticket to that, died from Covid as a result of going. Still gutting for all who knew and loved him. People shouldn't be deceived by "outdoors = safe" mantra either when 20K+ people in seats next to each other are chanting/yelling (weather conditions can play a part). Dr Phillip Lee (p-t GP, former Tory & now Lib-Dem MP) was on R5l from about 10.30pm last night talking down to earth common sense about this Govt's failure to make tough decisions & act in the national interest. Said in effect that if you come into close contact with someone with Omicron, the chances of you getting infected are enormously high because it's so transmissable.

The big difference between Cheltenham and now is that most people are double or triple jabbed, more safety conscious and aware, and take mitigating precautions like mask wearing.
