Does anybody have an opening word that they religiously stick to? Mine is ‘Raise’

I used to use RAISE every time. Tend to use STORE or STONE at the moment.

Yes, I use RAISE as well

Helps me to have same word as I then know where to go afterwards depending on which letters work.

I guess this doesn't make me solve it quickly ever, but it's all about just getting it for me and I have only failed once!

Used to be IRATE, then followed up by second guess of POUND - usually completed it in either 3 or 4 as covered all vowels and some of the most common consonants.

Have now switched to GROWL or CHINS as it's generally not the vowels that gets it but key "linking" consonants that give you a better chance of getting it 2 or 3 so starting with these 2 gives me better results. Case in point earlier this weeks was SHAWL - got it in two..

Heats, it’s a bit scary when it’s all grey but eliminating the ‘s’ early doors is helpful. It kills off the plural four letter words that could otherwise dominate.

I saw a boffin who suggests THURL

Something about flushing out the most regular word endings. It seems to work quite well.

I vary mine but often start with something like cater. Today I started with great - dunno why - but I reckon its gonna be a good day!

Yeah, we had a young cat killed by a van early January named Comet so I started using that and now can't bring myself to stop. Helped me out with comma the other day.

The other half uses ADIEU

RIP Comet. I got a cat during lockdown. I'd be gutted if anything happened to her :(

Luckily she never strays beyond the garden!

HEIST.

Covers ST, TH, SH and a couple of vowels. HASTE is another good starter.
