Anyone had any joy fast tracking a passport renewal lately? on 21:11 - Apr 26 by Lord_Lucan | Yeah but you said - "Years ago" "Years ago" was different. Two things have changed dramatically. 1/ The seemingly essential need to work with skeleton staff. 2/ The fact that no one takes responsibility of their own life and leaves everything until the last minute. |
Although no-one's accused me of being in point 2, in my defence I haven't been abroad for years, had no idea when my passport was expiring, and only found out today I'm shooting an ad in South Africa. Which is also a very quick turn around in the advertising world. It's also bloody annoying that a passport has to have at least 6 months left on it. No idea what that rule's all about. What's the point of the expiry date if that's not the expiry date?! Just sh!t timing all round really. #prayfordollers

It's because a small number of people every year have medical emergencies or accidents abroad and need to stay longer than they had planned, so 6 months is the standard buffer.

Anyone had any joy fast tracking a passport renewal lately? on 14:38 - Apr 26 by Lord_Lucan | Also - say you need 3 months clear on your passport before you can travel. This isn't definite info but some bod on the news today was saying a/ that it's three months left from your return journey (not out) b/If it expires in 2022 for example It's three clear months from day and month of issue and not the day and month of expiry ********** ********I find this bit difficult to believe but it's just a word to the wise. |
It’s not correct. | | | |

Lol that’s not how it works, the expiry date is getting back into your home country. Why would someone let you in their country if your travel document expires before the maximum amount of time you’re allowed in as a visitor? You’ve become an instant overstayer risk and might seen as having immigrant intent by the border authorities. However, you can always chance it and if you have a return ticket, proof of ties in the UK etc you’ll probably be fine. It’s unlikely the airline will stop you at LHR but again depends who you get as they’re liable for the return costs if you get stopped in SA. I know a lot of people that have flown internationally with under a month left on their passport without any issues. Either way it’s your responsibility to keep this up to date. Crazy that anyone whoever travels or has intent to travel abroad let’s it get within a year of expiry especially giving the complexities or travel these days. Good luck though. You can pay over the odds and get it sorted pretty easily for definite peace of mind but it’s going to cost you. [Post edited 27 Apr 2022 6:46]

Quite right JJJJ.... my passport was due to expire May22 but I renewed it in Jan21 when no one was thinking of travelling and the passport offices were quiet. Figured it was worth getting in early as travel would be opening up again and exactly this current situation might occur. Got it back within a week....can’t believe some people have sat around for two years moaning about not being able to travel and don’t have the foresight to check their passports and be ready.

I haven't sat around for two years moaning I can't travel and had no intention of travelling. See above. I don't know what JJJJ has said as I have him on ignore but I imagine it was something abusive and not at all helpful.

Does anybody know if the same rule about validity applies...so you would have to arrive 4 years and 9 months since the ISSUE not expiry date?

WifeSentence applied on the 8th of April and it is due to be delivered within the next hour and a half. That was a straightforward renewal.

Anyone had any joy fast tracking a passport renewal lately? on 20:43 - Apr 26 by The_Flashing_Smile | To fast track you need an appointment at a passport office. You fill in a form online and then have to go there as well. "just pop the details in online and press 'go' and some elves sort out the rest in some office somewhere and send it to you thereafter?" takes 10 weeks. I need it in 3 weeks. |
Anyone finding themselves needing a new passport urgently is guilty of poor planning. Hope that helps.

Some people are wired differently and planning that far in advance doesn't cross their mind. They deal with what is in front of then, when it is in front of them. Something like a passport, which is (for most people) only used once or twice a year can seem to have a very long expiry date, but this stronger emphasis on both date of issue and 6 months+ expiry date now the consequences of Brexit are being implemented strictly, is catching lot of people out.

What has changed since Brexit with regards to passport dates - ? I'll be honest I don't know but Gov.co.uk are saying three months on the passport to EU and not six months. As an aside I notice Portugal are letting Brits in through the EU passport line and Spain are likely to follow this if they haven't already done so - but you still need a stamp. I would wager that other EU countries will follow this with the probable exception of France

Your passport is no longer valid for entry to the EU if it was issued more than ten years ago. Whereas the limit used to be the expiry date as stated on the passport. Mrs Mylittletown's passport was issued in April 2014 with an expiry in 2025 (she had lost the previous passport) It will no longer be of any use after April 2024.

I have read an article about cases where people are being turned back due to the passport being more than 10 years from issue date at the end of the six month period because they reapplied with some months to go and had a 10 year plus passport to cover the excess. The article said that in the past it would have been waved through but now it is being applied strictly as we no longer have freedom of movement. So, to be safe, allow 9 years and 6 months from date of issue for countries with a six month requirement, and 9 years and 9 months for those with a 3 month requirement, rather than going by the expiry date. The article was this one which I can't get to work on my phone, but it comes up in Google search for "passport expiry cancel": https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/national/uk-today/20091161.mum-issues-pas

Oh I see - now if Dolly had this problem I could understand more as it really isn't common knowledge is it. I hate changing passports, you build up loads of visas and stamps so you look real cool and important at the passport desk but when you change it the blooming thing is empty and you look like a sad and lonely square. I had to change mine recently and then we had Covid - I am a very sad and lonely square

A lot of countries are changing to digital 'stamps' too, so you don't/won't even get the stamp in the passport where you always did.

Anyone had any joy fast tracking a passport renewal lately? on 19:01 - Apr 26 by NthQldITFC | The temporary incumbent of 10 Downing St., SW1A is threatening to privatise the Passport Office, I believe. Just what we fkn need. More of the country's public infrastructure in the hands of his corrupt mates. What we need is a revolution, and then a pragmatic and responsible investment in public infrastructure and basic services with modern management and employee buy in. Sorry. I realise that's no help. |
Ok, calm down Jeremy Junior.

I remember sitting up late at night trying to get a Tesco slot during the first lockdown. They appeared and disappeared before I could hit the button sometimes. Leaving the room to go for a wee became out of the question. It was like playing whack-a-mole. *This isn't really helpful I know. I'm just trying to join in.
