Best premier league centre back ever? If not, who would be your choice?

VVD is probably the best CB in world football at the moment as well.

Absolutely not. He isn't even in the top 5! One PL title...... nope

1 - Terry
2 - Vidic
3 - RIo
4 - Adams
5 - Campbell
6 - Kompany

Horrific statement

Not even top 2 for Liverpool, Carragher and Samy Hyppia won more.

But that logic Mickael Silvestre was 5 times the defender that Van Dijk is....

I think Stam is a good shout, although he only played 2 full seasons in the PL.
I would go for:
1. Stam
2. Van Dijk
3. Terry
4. Kompany
5. Vidic

Do you think bad players play for good teams who could easily afford to replace them?

How is it nonsense? Do you think you can be a winner of league that many times by being average? Fashionable yes but he still isn't in the top 5.

He has won the league once ffs, have a day off.

Rubbish!

So was Lineker a worse striker than Alan Smith? Was Shearer second rate? Is Jordan Henderson really a much better payer then Gascoigne?

Harry Kane - he must be useless?

Got to be Rio hasn't it?

When you talk of ball playing CB he has to be the best since the prem was created.

Don't know how he compared to years previous, but I've not seem anyone get close to his ability since the prem league begun.

a niche perspective

Alan Hansen.

I can never forgive him for a blatant foul he committed against us at Portman Road in 1985.

He hauled down Brennan when he was clean through on goal and would've scored. It was a sending off all day long but because Liverpool were the darlings back then, he only got a yellow. We were robbed of a blatant penalty or two that day as well.

You don't seem to understand the difference between individual player ability and number of titles won.

Nope, but not all players an a good team are World class.

Silvestre was never in the Premier League team of the year let alone any Continental/World individual recognition.
Van Dijk has been PL player of the year, UEFA player of the year, 2x PL team of year, 3x UEFA team of year, 2x World team of year.

All this stuff about how many titles etc is just nonsense. On that basis, Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker weren't very good, and Alan Smith was as good as Shearer and better than Lineker.
Kevin Beattie would have been really rubbish, as would Mariner.

Terry was a very good Premiership defender, but Champions League and international sides used to target him, because he was easy to pull out of position, and was slow on the turn. cf England Germany in the 2010 World Cup where, Thomas Muller and the Germans made him look a clown, and the Barcelona Champions League semi-final in 2012, when he was out of his depth and got sent off.

VVD is a different class than Terry, as was Ferdinand.

Its not about what they've won per se, it's about longevity. How many Premier league appearances has VVD made for a top side? 100 ish? If he does another couple of hundred at the same level then yes he'll have a very compelling case. But right now, when you're talking about best premier league defender, I think it would be difficult to make a case for VVD if his career ended tomorrow. That's the point about it being difficult to compare across eras, as VVD still has another few good years in him.

Nice post with some valid points.

Talking from an accolade standpoint and he's nowhere near some of the other names mentioned.

I think on an 'ability' level, VVD is up there among the best I've seen.

One of the great things about football is all the differing opinions.

Don't disagree, huge amounts of ability. But for me a lot of players have a lot of ability, the greats demonstrate it week in, week out, year after year. That's what makes them great, it's not so much what they've won or not but consistently delivering to such a high standard. Which is ability, mentality, drive, professionalism etc. Ledley King was as good a defender as you'll see, anyone who has ever worked with him says the same. But sadly, thanks to injuries, he couldn't do it week in, week out for 10 years so I wouldn't speak about him as a great. Ability wise he arguably was.

Agree re. opinions, what makes it interesting. Wouldn't bet against this conversation happening in 3-5 years btw and people agreeing on VVD, especially if he maintains what he has done for the last few seasons (when fit)

The OP clearly stated ‘best Premier League’ central defender rather than best ever in the top flight. So step down before trying to make a point.
