Running towards adversity... 14:14 - Jun 16 with 9067 views | Marshalls_Mullet | I like the new kits, pleased the clubs new slogan wasn't made visible. I suspect Mark Ashton would have liked it to be on view. Just seems a bit try hard to me. On the KOA podcast, the players didn't seem interested in the slogan when it was mentioned. It was almost glossed over.

Running towards adversity... on 18:34 - Jun 16 by portmanking | As someone who works with words for a living, I do agree the actual messaging itself is slightly off. IMO it should be Running Through Adversity. |
You have a problem ahead of you, you run toward it. You face the challenge. Running through things doesn't make any sense. And you work with words ??

What problem do we have? We start on 0 points the same as all other clubs. We need to get more points than all the others. It's not a problem. It's a target.

Running towards adversity... on 21:50 - Jun 16 by FrimleyBlue | Couldn't we have used 'Overcoming Adversity' instead? |
I’ve just watched Mark Ashtons interview in FB about this slogan , and he explains that it’s about the people whose money is being pumped into this club , and the fact that this club represents their values . The money comes from American pension funds of Firefighters and Policemen/ women, all of whom run towards adversity in the course of their every day duties as public servants . Their money supports ITFC , and ITFC as Ashton explains will be aiming to represent those values …. and these words will be our values too, not just empty corporate slogans .

Running towards adversity... on 15:04 - Jun 16 by The_Flashing_Smile | I think it does translate onto the pitch as well. If you've got a hairy-arsed oppo target man baring down on our goal, you want to be throwing everything in the way to stop him... not running away! It's about standing up to the battle, not shirking responsibility, being brave. And with it on the inside of the shirt it's not in your face, but the players will see it every time they put it on. Maybe it'll get into their heads, subconsciously, through the repetition of it always being there. Can't do any harm, anyway. |
This is my take on it too. Funnily enough, Ben Stokes used ‘adversity’ the other day: ‘There are going to be some bad days. There will be days when we'll probably lose a game with this mindset. The biggest challenge for us will be how we respond to adversity and things not going our way.‘ I get the drift as far as ITFC is concerned. You expressed it better than I could. I’ve seen enough mission statements, slogans etc and they could never sit right with me, but if our owners want this, that’s fine.

Or you run towards it and battle with that thing, whatever it may be. Running through it sounds like avoiding it (get through to the other side and away rather than standing and battling). It really shouldn't be this difficult.

Agree to disagree. If you run through it, it suggests you battle and conquer what's ahead of you. Running towards it doesn't guarantee conquering it.

You're missing the sentiment - possible intentionally. Adversity is inevitable. It’s part of life. We’ve all faced it at some point. We might even be facing it right now. And it’s all but guaranteed that we’re going to face it again in the future. Some of us have experienced a lot of adversity in our lives. Others, not so much. What’s interesting about adversity is this: The more we avoid it, the harder it is to face it. But the more we face it, the less we fear it, and the more resilient we become. In order to thrive in adversity, we must look for it; seek it out; run toward it. We must get used to it. What kind of person thrives in adversity? How will you respond when it strikes? How might regularly facing it be an advantage? Whether it's bring or not is another argument but the narrative certainly fits for us in our current position. It's easy to snipe at these thing and I understand that but why bother? Certain posters also like to carefully position themselves to be ready to say 'I TOLD YOU SO' when the tide starts to turn. Just bloody enjoy the now and get knee deep in the excitement.

What’s cringe worthy about it ? He’s explaining why we have adopted the USA services mantra ( because they run towards adversity in their daily job. We having revived money from those peoples pension funds are trying to show respect for that and that as a user of the pension fund money will adhere / adopt the same philosophy. I see no harm nor slight on our owners .

In the context of a firefighter, running through adversity would suggest running through a burning building and exiting at the other end without putting out the fire, which does not seem appropriate. [Post edited 17 Jun 2022 10:28]

Agreed. To my mind, if "running through adversity" means anything it suggests running despite some sort of disadvantage such as a disability.

I think 81 answered it better than me. It's not about conquering it. We won't win every game. But it's about facing up to the challenge and giving your all (win, lose or draw).

Which is it? Do you care or not! Lol. [Post edited 17 Jun 2022 13:45]

But a Horse eating it's own tail in this case. 1 - Marcus Evans era is ended by new owners funded by this pension pot 2 - The pension pot is fond of this mantra of Running Towards Adversity 3 - Running Towards Adversity is abbreviated as RTA 4 - An RTA is another way of describing a car crash 5 - A car crash is a pretty apt description of the Marcus Evans era And round you go again. Running towards adversity... on 20:38 - Jun 16 by PhilTWTD | Not sure any comparison is intended, more the implication that the attitude shown by the police/fire serviec should be emulated by the team, not shirking the challenge etc. Military metaphors are often used in football which I'd say could be viewed as more questionable. |
I was negative to the Purpose statement lower in this thread; but hadn’t understood the connection to the blue light services in Arizona. Discussed on KOA kit launch… sort of makes more sense Still not sure it’s the purpose of the team or the club… but considering players battling and not giving up on a 1-0 deficit or getting out of the false position of league one - maybe it does work? Didn’t sound like Wolfie was that bought into it though! Saying it was Ashtons thing.

Running towards adversity... on 14:43 - Jun 18 with 751 views | DJR | It seems to me that running towards adversity roughly translates to rising to the challenge, and it is clear that last season we did not do this. So I can understand Ashton wanting to place further emphasis on this phrase next season. and to get the players to buy into it. The interview with Woolfie and Burns suggests that they may not have done so thus far, but there is a whole close season to come, and maybe the club is planning to use the phrase as a motivational tool. I can also see the reason for including it inside the shirt so that it is embedded into the players each time they pull on the shirt. And before you say "You're David Brent and I claim my £5", I normally can't stand corporate speak, but the firefighter connection seems to me to give the phrase much more credibility.
