If the UK were to rejoin the EU tomorrow on 17:42 - Jun 20 by Churchman | Brits hating foreigners? I don’t think so. Although there are plenty of idiots as there are in all countries, by and large that’s not my experience. A couple of years ago I worked with a French chap who was gf’d/married to an English woman. We were working for HMG on a cross government project and he’d risen to a decent grade. We were having coffee one day and he said in his best ‘allo allo’ accent ‘do you know, its amazing that I’m able to work here. If you applied for a job in the French Civil Service, if you got a response it would be no. Go away (polite version)’. ‘French jobs, French people’. As far as people from ROI, CTA pre-dates the EU and this wa# reaffirmed 3 years ago. Irish people have the right to live and work here and technically visa versa. Sorry, my Brits hate foreigners line was purely said to amuse myself while attempting to nip any thoughts of a move to London in the bud. My partner was born in Caracas but holds a Spanish passport. I have no interest in moving back to UK. Brexit is just a handy excuse. Thanks for info though

If the UK were to rejoin the EU tomorrow on 18:45 - Jun 20 by Churchman | Funnily enough that was about where I was in 2016 and was the primary reason for me voting remain. Economics, jobs. ONS trade data for April is interesting: https://www.ons.gov.uk/economy/nationalaccounts/balanceofpayments/bulletins/uktr ‘EU exports have increased for the third consecutive month in April 2022 and are at the highest levels since records began.’ I’ve not read up yet on why and what’s underneath the figures or even if the figures are correct - or whether the way data was collected pre-Brexit was on the same basis. But it’s interesting. |

Somewhat off topic but I read an article today that stated ROI residents have to pay 60 Euros for a GP appointment? Plus charges for vaccinations, ECG, blood tests. Is that really true?

I wonder how long before the UK has this too. It has been in place for a long time in NHS dentistry.

If the UK were to rejoin the EU tomorrow on 19:43 - Jun 20 with 878 views | mutters | At this stage there are a lot of unknowns, maybe this question is best asked in 10 years time? When the UK joined the EC back in 72 lots of today's benefits of being part of the EU were not in place. It took time to evolve. Just as the UK being out of the EU will take time to evolve before the full picture can be understood

I have a mad French customer who lives in Mayfair and said he cried tears of joy when he was recently given a UK passport - and that if he had been allowed to back then he would have voted Brexit. He 50% owns a nightclub just over the road from Selfridges where drinks are only served by the bottle, beer isn't on the menu and a bottle of gin will cost you £750 Total insanity!

As a matter of interest, do you have any specific benefit that you anticipate materialising in 10 years (or should that be 7.5 years since we are already a quarter of the way into that decade)?

The day after the referendum dopes bombarded government departments with emails and phone calls, demanding that their websites immediately remove reference to the EU 'because we've left the EU'. How well do you think those dopes will take to your assertion? [Post edited 20 Jun 2022 20:41]

Yer, think it is about €60 for a gp visit( not been for myself for about 10 years). Not sure about charges. Pensioners and under 18,s get a medical card that entitles them to free medical care. Think it's the same for people on benefits and possibly lower earners. Many people have health insurance and others like myself just pay the €60 every now and then.

To say we need to give it time, Rome wasn't built in a day, we need to give it another 10 years and we are getting better at negotiating and surely the next deal with the EU can't be as bad as the most recent version that is just about holding the fragile peace in Ireland. Yes, these Brexoptimists will always be able to see the sunlit uplands somewhere on the horizon. If only Nigel could be given power to properly implement it and tell the EU where to shove their trade.

No idea, I will be very surprised if we managed to replicate the benefits overall that membership of the EU can offer. My point is really around it's impossible to say at this stage. I suspect actually it will take longer before a fair assessment can be undertaken. Maybe 20 years, which you could argue begs the question of what was th point of it all? 🤣 Actually one thing I can foresee is the EU imploding at some point
