It speaks volumes about them that when they're trying to appeal to their base, they're promising tax cuts, spending cuts, more bigotry and cruelty and when they're trying top pea to voters it's promises for more coppers, nurses and schools.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

But isn’t that the idea at this stage?
V disappointed Money Penny. Sargent Tom seems out of his depth. I thought Badenoch came across much better this time. The other two were a bit like a couple of warhorses slugging it out.

I never heard anything about more coppers, nurses or schools. The only thing they promised was that they would wait and see what the independent pay review bodies say on public pay before telling them it cannot be afforded and go away and suggest even less. (Although, of course, as ever the independent review body's recommendation on MP pay will be readily accepted once again.)
The main message from all (except Sunak who they point out has made a mess of the economy while they were part of the same Government) was cut taxes and we can't afford public services.
The UK can do absolutely nothing about climate change. We’re too small
Wrong.
1) We can still reduce our own reliance on fossil fuels. Whilst our numbers have gone down quite a lot recently that is somewhat masked by the fact that our reported numbers do not include the carbon used to make items we import, which given our shift away from manufacturing is a bit of a cheat. 2) We still have diplomatic clout which we should be using. 3) Generally we have pretty good engineers in this country, which we could be using to develop new technologies to help drive green energy not just here but across the world. Making it easier for everyone to transition is a bonus to everyone. 4) We can give aid to nations who cannot use the fossil fuel shortcuts we did to "modernise".
There are a whole load of things we could be doing but as usual people like yourself will just come out with "but China / India / Other country".
And before that it was people saying climate change is real but not a big deal.
And before that it was people saying climate change is real but not caused by humans.
And before that it was people saying climate change isn't real at all.
The mental gymnastics people come up with on this issue are always hilarious.
Just to be clear on this, no one individual is going to be able to do much, outside of voting for people who will do something about the issue. The people with power are those running countries and large corporations, people with actual power. The whole "your carbon footprint" was rather brilliant spin by BP.

I applaud your earnest beliefs - but reality has to impinge on those trusted to lead us in a competitive world.
I think you’ll find that quite a few countries rather hope global warming is real. It opens up arctic trade routes and resources. In Russia for example they’d very much like to be 1.5 degrees warmer and see New York flooded.
They’d love to see posturing western countries hamstring their economies and outsource their manufacturing - in China say.
And in Australia they (and the Brits apparently) are very happy to trade on the other side of the world whilst selling vast tonnages of coal to China and India
Meanwhile Prime Minister Richi Rich will of course be trumpeting a flagship trade deal with India to further hasten the end of the world
I have to admit that I quite like the idea of living 1.5 degrees warmer too. In the UK we’re used to saving up all year to be 15 degrees warmer for two weeks.

What an incredibly simplistic, defeatist, and selfish view. Global warming/ climate change is unlikely to massively affect us, but our kids and their kids it will. But you carry on shrugging your shoulders with the “Well I can’t do anything about it and quite like a proper summer” attitude. It’s easier that way for you.

Did I hear that national response times for ambulances is at 51 minutes? Yeah, let's cut taxes.

Tax cuts for the rich. Levelling up agenda thrown in the bin then.
Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

Not again.
If the gulf stream fails, which it probably will if the Arctic ice cap continues to disappear, Britain will have similar weather to Newfoundland.

I saw the effects of this (climate change and Tory policy)this weekend: an old dear collapsed in the pub. Pacemaker on the blink. Ambulance called. Response time? 2 hours.
I see bad enoch has done an about turn on net zero.
What next ?
The thought that colonial rule may not have been the cosy arrangement for Africans that she would have. Or that teaching assistants in inner city schools are not "superfluous staff"
Peddling this regressive stuff, shows she has learned nothing and continues to see the world from her privileged background. I'm surprised she has not referred to other blacks as 'uppity'.
Meanwhile, in an attempt to outdo Dorries in the stupidity stakes, the blubber has complained today (in Parliament) that taking rime to debate a confidence motion was distracting from more important problems.
Conveniently overlooking that as with Feb 2020 he ducked out of another COBRA meeting this w/e where emergency debate was taking place - and only shut up whinging when it was pointed out by the speaker that it was HIS government who had tabled the motion.

"I'm surprised she has not referred to other blacks as 'uppity'".
I think the phrase you were looking for is "other people of colour".

The tory party are literally going to vote for 'Most like Boris, without being Boris'
[Post edited 18 Jul 2022 20:56]
Any other vote would suggest they didn't still support him. They supported him until a month or so ago. They have only got rid because his position has become untenable. I doubt many think he has really done anything wrong. Just listen to how Truss and Mordaunt dance around any invitation to criticise him at all. If the party didn't still support Johnson, there would be no harm in saying why he is unsuitable. Instead, Tugendhat does that and is voted out.
Jeez! I think Harry needs to be sent for some D&I training.
In summary then, all the candidates are Sh1t and we don’t get a say on it, so I haven’t bothered following it closely.
Ag yes, my comments on what a far rightie might day...... makes me a racist
Perhaps if I commented on why I think a fair number of Tory Party members will not vote for Sunak, that should have me reported to the race relations board
Rather much of the same mindset as the wokey cokeys who seem able to find 'evil' in the most innocuous of situations
Otherwise, the thought that the Tory party still supports the lying lardar se, I would draw attention to three recent by elections, where Tory voters turned out in their thousands to vote against him.
Iwould suggest that bumber us likely to increase if he hangs around tring to interfere in something that is no real cobercern of his anymotre. And he he conrinues to lie about the phobe calls he made.
He has been the worst (in so many ways) PM this country has had, for a fair few centuries, and it would seem there is still much more to come out.
"Britain’s foreign secretary attended that meeting. He left it, apparently still holding documents. He somehow managed to lose the security detail all foreign secretaries have. He flew to Italy alone. And there he met the former lieutenant-colonel in the KGB, Alexander Lebedev, a spy who was stationed inside the Russian embassy in London in the late 1980s and served alongside fellow officers who included Vladimir Putin. It was a meeting, Johnson acknowledged to MPs last week, that took place in breach of all protocols, without any foreign office officials present.
We still don’t know what was said at that meeting. We don’t know if there are any official records of it. We don’t know who else was there. We don’t know what documents Johnson had in his possession. We don’t know if he betrayed secrets * — either deliberately or inadvertently — about Nato’s strategy."
* we do know Putin paid him money, a number of times

There are times when I really don’t understand how we can end up with a government of such regressive attitudes, then as if by magic I read posts like this and think, ah I can see how.,
