Davis - some statement that 18:33 - Jul 25 with 7283 viewstractorboy1978

A record fee paid by a L1 club for a defender - potentially in excess of £1.5m including add ons. Shows how important McKenna sees those wing back roles being for how we want to play and the style of player highlights that he does want 'a left sided Wes Burns'.

No pressure, lad.

This guy says £900,000. Assume £1.5mill might be final figure should all add ons be met.

Feel a lot better seeing that figure I have to say. Anything below seven figures would be good for me.

Don’t mind rising to £1.5M if it’s related to us being promoted to the Championship, which you’d have thought it is.

Think that's unlikely, the initial offer was understood to be a million and I think there were subsequent bids from there.

In hindsight you'd have paid £1.5m for Burns wouldn't you?

Watson said a record for a defender.

That might well be right. Had a look for a table but couldn't find one, kept coming up with record sales from League One.

According to transfermarkt, highest fee paid was by Sunderland for Grigg (3.1m); highest fee for a defender was Sheffield United for Brayford (£2.07m) and highest for a left back was for Reece James by Wigan (£1.26m). Whether this includes add ons, some of which may not have been paid, I’m not sure.

What did we sell Toto for again? More than that, so.....

Quite excited by this in some ways, as it suggests that we are looking at players like this, Fridge, Woolf, possibly Hirst to recoup massive fees and push the club upwards that way. Obviously nothing is certain, but at some point we will see another Webster/Downes/Mings yielding sell ons etc from someone in this squad.

Brayford, as mentioned elsewhere in the thread, £2m or £1.5m depending on where you look, Reece James, Man U to Wigan, £1m apparently, and Jose Fonte, £1.2m from Palace to Southampton.

Fulham were paying serious cash for players in the early Al Fayed days, but it was probably still known as Div 2 then. Bought Chris Coleman for £2mil'ish I think

It is a real statement of intent, but what most excites me about our signings is - their age. No 32 year old journeyman picking up a packet and living on past glories. If we've got them right, we've got them in their prime and for years to come.

Excellent signing on the face of it. Although our recent history of buying young from the Prem is spotty.
No excuses now lads. Promotion.

Something I don’t like about spending £1.5M on a left back in League 1.

We’ve done very good business under Ashton, this one feels slightly reckless.

This is the one I'm most excited about... But can't really say why. I'm a terrible judge though.

It might be because all my favourite players have played "left back" (Thompson, Cresswell, Taricco) and this for me was our weakest position last season and we've gone and got two replacements.

Reece James has been at Chelsea since he was about 4!

Indeed.

Don’t know enough about him other than small clips and Leeds fans reviews. Mixed bag, some think he’s very good, some think he was overhyped - never been one to judge a player from previous fans though, wait and see how they do for us.

From a purely financial perspective, it’s a big outlay for a Left Back, especially in League 1, for somebody who has only played 21 games at 22 years old.

Let’s see how this plays out.

We are owned by financial investors. They buy stock. Some go up a lot. some a bit. some go down. It is what it is. At least we are speculating now, we havnt done that for years

I guess he's still young with (potentially) good resale value. A couple of good seasons and he'll be worth double or triple I'd imagine.

Obviously still a gamble.

And gambling is what we've got to get used to isn't it. It's the way the club will operate - buy low, sell high. to get premium sell on's sometimes you're going to have to buy high as well.

Every signing is a gamble/investment.

When we invested little, a good return was to hang onto Championship football in negative fashion. Now we can invest well, we are playing much better football ... just need the success to go with it.

Difficult concept signing youth team players from prem clubs in terms of the pricing of them. I wonder if he would have been anywhere near that price if Leeds had gone down? (I guess he would be playing in that scenario?) The guy has played something like 30 senior games so it seems a lot but clearly someone like McKenna will be very much aware of emerging talent and hopefully we've picked up a gem.

They did. Cunning way of sneaking 12 players onto the pitch.

Indeed we needed to strengthen, I’m not questioning that - the price tag being suggested is more than I’m comfortable with for a left back in League 1.

Just an opinion, hope he proves to be a snip at £1.5M, but it’s a gamble no doubt.
