Cat Guilt 15:57 - Aug 29 with 3706 views | Swailsey | I have no idea why I’m posting this here, mainly because I’ll feel less judged by strangers perhaps, and also because you’re all generally lovely, reasoned (…) people. I have recently bought a house (again thanks to those who helped), but I am in a strange situation. I have rented for 3 years here and since day one, the neighbours cat (terrace house) has come in and out, hung around mine for a few hours every day, sleeps by my feet/on my desk when I work. His owners know, they don’t mind and are lovely. He definitely is fond of me and we have a connection - truth be told, I’m heartbroken to leave him. He is attached to me, will follow me around, sit with me in the garden - again, I stress, the owners know. I did write them a letter asking if I could adopt him (I know that could be seen as offensive, but it was handled with love and care) and they were lovely, said no, but have told me to keep seeing him as much as I am until I leave. I am ok to deal with the loss of him (wfh I see him a lot), but I am wracked with guilt that he will be sad, will be upset and feel abandoned. I know he has a loving home, but I feel awful and that I wish I hadn’t bonded with him with so much. Will he be ok? Will the sense of feeling abandoned pass with him? Am I awful? Thanks and sorry for going on. [Post edited 29 Aug 2022 22:24]

Cat Guilt on 16:25 - Aug 29 with 2658 views | Oldsmoker | This may come as a shock to you. Dogs have owners but cats have staff. The cat is using you. When you leave, the cat will fixate on the new tenant but only if he chooses to.

Cat Guilt on 16:39 - Aug 29 with 2589 views | FattyBoomBoom | I agree with poster above. In short, cats are ar$eholes. Our family cat is a lap cat. The kids adore him. He's just the most affectionate cat and does everything you describe of your neighbours' cat. Some new woman a few doors away was feeding him better food than we can afford and he went AWOL for 3 weeks. I politely asked her to stop, and he eventually returned but turned his nose up at our cheap offerings....until he realised it was that or nothing. Now he just mopes around and honestly is a different cat. It feels like he's just waiting for a better offer. They're not loyal creatures. They're totally selfish!

And when you ask your own cat, who you feed and care for, where the stash that was on the table is, he looks at you with that glazed look 'what stash?'.

Cat Guilt on 17:04 - Aug 29 with 2480 views | NthQldITFC | I'm not really a cat fan because of the predations they make on birds and the deposits they leave in my veggie patches. They're at plague proportions in places (nowhere near as bad as humans though!). I have been fond of individual cats though, and a bond between two animals of different species can be really strong, so I feel for your dilemma. But I suspect cats that don't dwell on things for too long, as long as he has his official residence and friends therein, so don't feel bad.

Cat Guilt on 17:13 - Aug 29 with 2427 views | Swansea_Blue | It’s be fine. I know they’re all different, but you could scratch the itch by getting down to a pet hostel/re-homing place when you move. I’m sure there are loads of pets looking for new owners these days after so many people went pet nuts during covid. My sister-in-law’s cat went to stay with my parents in law for a few weeks and has completely adopted them. Cats seem to do that, so as much as it enjoys spending time with you I imagine it’ll forget you as soon as you move (not sure if that helps 😬).

Cat Guilt on 17:36 - Aug 29 with 2360 views | Mullet | He would literally eat your face off if you died and couldn't feed him. Cats are evil and rubbish and will only hurt and disappoint you. There's a reason they are associated with witches and massive environmental damage to local ecosystems. He will not even remember you once he's had a few meals at his new victims' gaff. You've done well to break the cycle. Go and live your life freer and stronger than ever. Hakuna Matata Swailsey my man.

Cat Guilt on 17:41 - Aug 29 with 2324 views | belgablue | A pet cat can be great fun. Cats are warm and fluffy, like cuddly toys, and their owners give them lots of time and affection. And, just like cuddly toys, they do very little in return.

Cat Guilt on 17:54 - Aug 29 with 2251 views | blueasfook | I don't think the cat will care much when you're gone. He will probably move onto another neighbour to go chill with. Many cats have a "second home" and will go spend time there with other people. Usually because they get fed there or the second home might be a quieter place for them to sit and chill for a few hours. This cat has a loving family it seems so he will be OK in terms of having a safe and secure home. Maybe in your new place you can get a cat of your own if you enjoy feline company. Cat Guilt on 18:21 - Aug 29 with 2146 views | Seablue | Don't take any notice of some of the anti cat comments you have got. Cats are sensitive , soulful animals as you have clearly experienced. The cat will miss you but will adjust over time. You need to rehome a cat and recreate the bond! Blue Cross at Wherstead are brilliant!

Cat Guilt on 19:36 - Aug 29 with 1936 views | BlueandTruesince82 | Leave a note for the new tenants, hopefully they are cat people and will show hom the same affection you do. Also before you go let the neighbours know you totally understand them not wanting to give him up, it is after all exactly what you are struggling with and let them know tbe offer stands if he shows signs of being unhappy when you leave, if they're good owners, and it sounds like they are, then I'm sure they would contact you if they felt he would be happier.
