Cat Guilt 15:57 - Aug 29 with 3709 views | Swailsey | I have no idea why I’m posting this here, mainly because I’ll feel less judged by strangers perhaps, and also because you’re all generally lovely, reasoned (…) people. I have recently bought a house (again thanks to those who helped), but I am in a strange situation. I have rented for 3 years here and since day one, the neighbours cat (terrace house) has come in and out, hung around mine for a few hours every day, sleeps by my feet/on my desk when I work. His owners know, they don’t mind and are lovely. He definitely is fond of me and we have a connection - truth be told, I’m heartbroken to leave him. He is attached to me, will follow me around, sit with me in the garden - again, I stress, the owners know. I did write them a letter asking if I could adopt him (I know that could be seen as offensive, but it was handled with love and care) and they were lovely, said no, but have told me to keep seeing him as much as I am until I leave. I am ok to deal with the loss of him (wfh I see him a lot), but I am wracked with guilt that he will be sad, will be upset and feel abandoned. I know he has a loving home, but I feel awful and that I wish I hadn’t bonded with him with so much. Will he be ok? Will the sense of feeling abandoned pass with him? Am I awful? Thanks and sorry for going on. [Post edited 29 Aug 2022 22:24]

I was certain it was going to be that the OP had run one over.

Not at all. As has been pointed out, cats do what they want. If the new tenants treat the cat well, he will hang around. If they don't, he won't (and will find somewhere else to hang out instead).

Cat Guilt on 17:04 - Aug 29 by NthQldITFC | I'm not really a cat fan because of the predations they make on birds and the deposits they leave in my veggie patches. They're at plague proportions in places (nowhere near as bad as humans though!). I have been fond of individual cats though, and a bond between two animals of different species can be really strong, so I feel for your dilemma. But I suspect cats that don't dwell on things for too long, as long as he has his official residence and friends therein, so don't feel bad. |
‘I suspect cats don’t dwell on things for too long’ That’s a brilliant statement but hard to prove scientifically. As they are supposed to have nine lives, unless they can remember what happened in their previous lives (and that’s a different argument altogether) they will lose a life soon and won’t remember you anyway.

When I had a flat in London, I used to feed a cat that belonged to a Greek lady 3 doors down from me. One day I caught her shoving it out the door with a broom/kicking him and so I picked him up and kept him in my flat. He had a few issues which the Vet sorted, the worst a broken rib along with a hyperthyroid. I managed to find a new home for him with a lovely old lady in the next road when I moved, she had a llong garden and I made sure if he turned up where I used to live that the other residents kept a look out. He never strayed from the old lady where he was spoilt rotten until he passed away a few years later. I used to visit him every time I went down to London. I’ve had several cats since then and they are amazing creatures. Yes independent but loving in their own way. Currently we have Didz and Murph. Hopefully you can continue to visit your little friend. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Yeah, was meant as a bit of tongue-in-cheek what if they are cat-hating maniacs type thing. Cats soon get a sense of where they are and are not welcome.

Cat Guilt on 22:48 - Aug 29 with 772 views | jeera | Not a fan of cats although I wouldn't intentionally hurt one. Unless we count the odd well-deserved jug of cold water. I do sometimes feel for those who have 'escaped' and got 'lost' and are found hundreds of miles away to then be returned to their owners. I often wonder if the thing has intended to get away and is absolutely dismayed to find itself back in the company of some people it cannot stand after making all that effort.

There was a chap who always looked after the neighbour's rabbit whenever they went on holiday. Then one year the neighbours went away and forgot to tell them. Well, it was several days into their break that the chap realised they had gone away and not asked him to look after it. Or had they and perhaps he had forgotten! But then that very moment it got even worse. As he considered the possibility he had forgotten, his terrier came in carrying said rabbit all covered in dirt and decidedly an ex-rabbit. What was the chap to do? Well, the neighbours were very unlikely to be back that day so he quickly went to the pet shop and found a similar breed, colour and size rabbit. He rushed home, took it round and put it in the hutch which he found open. He then filled in the hole under the fence where his naughty terrier had burrowed through to commit his heinous crime. After scolding his dog severely, he disposed of the body of the poor deceased rabbit. He made sure the new rabbit was well looked after until the neighbours did return. When he did see them, he asked how their holiday was and checked that all was well. Their holiday had been good but there was a remarkable story they had to tell as well. You see, the day before they left on holiday their poor old rabbit had died and they buried it in the back garden. However, and they said "you are not going to believe this!", it turned out when they returned the rabbit hadn't died and was somehow resurrected and alive and well in its cage after all!

Cat Guilt on 23:55 - Aug 29 with 733 views | giant_stow | I too have just finished a long running relationship with a neighbours cat. Snooky has long since moved on, but I still miss her and wait for her to come back in winter (as is sometimes her way). Its fine to feel worried about it, but the cat will be fine.

Cat Guilt on 06:07 - Aug 30 with 639 views | ElephantintheRoom | That cat got in somehow. In your new home your next cat-like visitor could be a cat burglar if you aren’t more careful with doors and windows. One house I lived in had 5 cats both sides and 3 over the road. I got so fed up with cars pooing in my garden I got a dog. IF one of your new neighbours has a moggy it will soon make friends with you. It’s what they do.

Cat Guilt on 12:00 - Aug 30 with 511 views | Gogs | A neighbour’s cat adopted me over lockdown. She let me have him full time about 18 months ago, and he’s a great companion, even though he does have a habit of bringing in unwanted guests, loads of mice (which I’ve no problem with him controlling), a few birds (which he gets shouted at for bringing in), and lately fleas (which I’m now trying to get rid of). I felt guilty when I started going back in to the office and leaving him alone a few days a week. He’s ok though, he’s the gregarious sort who is friends with most houses nearby. Cats are very adaptable and they soon get used to a bit of change. Sure yours will too, even though you’re going to miss him
