I think one of the main things seemed to become that current setup didn't really rate him - great move for him and a half decent fee for him.

Fact he is now on 9x as much shows you how little he was on - guessing something £325 a week to £3k a week

Are you saying the new contract that the club offered was £325 per week? Or his current contract was £325 per week?

Could not agree more. I would like us to show some confidence that we can bring young players into the senior side, develop them ourselves, benefit from their contribution for a couple of years at least and then get 100% of their sell on fee, rather than 20%.

Especially so when you consider the money TS agent was asking for. It was peanuts in the grand scheme of things, and people would be shocked at what he was on here. The situation feels entirely avoidable, as did Gibbs. BUT, given where we found ourselves we've probably made a decent fist of a bad situation.

I think sometimes we lose sight of our perfect storm, as such, of conditions that limit youth involvement right now.

We are in League One, have substantial investment, are title favourites and simply must get promoted given the owners, investment and long term plan.

Not a lot of wriggle room for us to bed in young players unless they are better than what we have. Given we can effectively buy who we want at that level, that's just not going to be the case that young players can develop in our first team under these circumstances.

If we go up and find ourselves consolidating or if we'd had no money at this level and were on a financial par with most of our rivals then you'd expect more focus on youth.

Being the biggest club (Derby / Wednesday as big) with financial power akin to 10 clubs in this division combined means we can pick up and attract players that are ready to win promotion now. With the division as relentless as it was last year, we can't afford to drop points letting youngsters make the sort of natural mistakes they will make.

Anyone good enough, like Humphreys, will still be around the squad. These kids need to be good enough to start in League One. If they show they are good enough I have no doubt McKenna will include them.

Not like contracts really mean anything in football. He could be out the door next summer to a league two club. Handled badly on all sides, let's all move on.

Current contract, but the one on offer was not even in same stratosphere as one he's signed at Hudds judging by Clive's posts

Given our position I agree.

If he becomes a £5m - £10m player and Huddersfield sell him then ultimately we've got £1.5m - £2.5m for someone unproven, never scored above L2, final year of contract and selling as a L1 club. If he doesn't, or he's a couple of million then we get something approaching £800k. Any less than that and we've got £500k for him which will certainly seem like value.

Now what'll happen is sods law Huddersfield go down, he'll get firing and they'll end up selling not from a position of power for about £2m, then we'll watch him tear it up at his next club and move on for £60m to Man City.

At the same time, if that were to be the case, which would actually surprise me, to be honest, it's not great to keep selling players for six-figure or low seven-figure fees then see them move on from the next club for £5m - £10m a year or so on with us picking up a small percentage.

I think we may have been overly rigid in what was offered to him, but perhaps that was as he wasn't rated particularly highly. Having said that, it's pretty similar to the Liam Gibbs situation a year earlier.

Think bringing players through from being senior U23s, so to speak, to first-teamers is something we have to work on. We've lost too many players lately at that stage. Dobra's another, apparently lots of clubs from higher divisions already turning up at Chesterfield to watch him.

I agree re Gibbs.

But if Dobra was rated highly, where were these other clubs when he signed for Chesterfield?

They do mean something, he's guaranteed that income for 4 years - if they sell him to a L2 club on less money they'll have to settle that

He hadn't done enough to attract them, or perhaps hadn't had the chance to play regularly enough in order to attract them.

Humphreys has everything in his locker to be a player worth 8 figures within a couple of years. We really cannot feck that one up.

These lads (Gibbs/Simpson) are going a league higher and going to play more minutes than they would here in L1. At some point we have to trust players and force them into squads and onto the pitch if they are good enough, which Humphreys is.

The Dobra tale over the last couple of years was a sad one.

I thought that he was an obvious serious prospect who needed a bit of faith and encouragement.

Sending him out on loan to a badly run struggling side was a very poor decision if we really wanted him to develop.

I have little doubt that he will end up playing at least Championship level, either in in England or in Europe.

Well clearly the club didn't value him as much as he valued himself I'm guessing? I think Ashton and the new owners have certainly got more right than they have wrong, thus far.

I still think if he was good enough, he would have had more opportunities here

That was evidently the case. No idea whether he would have been a success here and I suspect he probably wouldn't have got too many chances this season given the model we're working to, so perhaps it's for the best for all parties that he moved on.

That's a big contract for someone pretty much untested. Kudos to the lad and his agent if he rises to the top. You win some, you lose some - time will tell in this instance.

Colchester was very frustrating, should have a season in which he played 30-40 games. Shame the loan wasn't ended and he could have gone out on loan to the National League in January.

Interesting point that they'll play more minutes in the Championship than they would here. It's the other side of having such strength in depth senior player-wise. That's obviously a good thing and will massively benefit us in this division this year but at the same time it makes it difficult to integrate young players. Hopefully Humphreys will make a significant number of appearances this season.

The transfer windows really don't help as you end up covering potential long term absences and they often don't happen so you have senior players who then take opportunities away when they are just lower risk back ups

Fair enough. Probably shows he was never gonna sign here regardless of how much we offered. At least we can move on now.

Clubs are never going to find themselves in a situation where it isn't important to be as competitive as possible right now, right this moment. That's the nature of football.

But, club's also have to compromise immediate success for long-term sustainability sometimes. In reality we make that compromise all the time, in fact we're making that compromise today!

If you asked anyone in football who would likely guarantee you the highest level of performance this season out of Sam Vokes, Macauley Bonne and Gassan Ahadme, the answer would be 1. Vokes, 2. Bonne, 3, Ahadme. They'd all cost us a similar amount, but sometimes you compromise on quality right now to build a squad that might have more value down the line.

Same with youth players really. There will always be a good reason to take the more conservative road and pick someone who'll come with more guarantees. But you'll never build anything long term that way.

He left during Ashtons tenure. His contract ran out 3-4 months after the takeover.

Mayve been too late by then if Norwich had already turned his head.
