Interesting little flick through the Sheff Wed forum 15:53 - Sep 14 with 11604 views | TRUE_BLUE123 | Fair to say they are very confident, as I would expect. One poster seemingly underestimating our squad depth. from their expected line-ups, they are very strong in midfield. Not too sure about their defence if I'm honest. Absolutely massive game. Bring it on. https://www.owlstalk.co.uk/forums/topic/313893-team-for-ipswich/#comments

To be fair, reading their forum a lot of the SW fans seems pretty sensible and level-headed - don't sense any arrogance from most. Every fanbase/forum has a the select few who have wild opinions and others who are over confident about their own club - it is normal. Don't mind SW at all, huge club, incredibly loyal fan base, and have a seemingly decent side to go with it.

100% As i put in my Original Post, its to be expected that they are confident as it is with us. Every forum has some muppets... Good club Wednesday, ive got nothing against them, just want to smash them on saturday. [Post edited 15 Sep 2022 11:34]

Interesting little flick through the Sheff Wed forum on 11:35 - Sep 15 with 1382 views | bournemouthblue | My concern with Sheffield Wednesday is they are likely to be a big rugged side, likely to be able to mix it up against us whilst being very effective at what they do In pure football terms I expect them to be superior but a buoyant fanbase and a big crowd behind them, they will certainly make things tricky So far, we have overcome everything we have come across without anyone really laying a glove on us Wednesday are likely to have more tricks up their sleeve and able at times to put us under pressure that overs simply haven't I've no doubt McKenna will have us well prepared and knows what to expect

Owlstalk isn't representative of a lot of fans. Tough game for us against the best team in the league at the moment, your strength in depth is as good if not better than us, I do believe McKenna is a better manager than Darren Moore, Moore is the reason we may fail to go back up IMHO.

The only thing I would fear against them is that they may be a Rotherhamlike team, who are essentially a league one team on steroids. Meaning they will attempt to press the life out of us and be physical but have the quality at this level to make the most of our blips in possession that we have sometimes. In pure footballing terms I'm very doubtful they are likely to be able to match us, so hope they are a more expansive/creative team that we put to the sword! Exciting game either way.

The Opta Stats on pressing have them fairly middle of the road and in the 'Zones of Control' they certainly don't seem to have dominated high up the pitch in the same way that we have. https://theanalyst.com/eu/2022/08/league-one-stats-2022-23/

Interesting little flick through the Sheff Wed forum on 13:08 - Sep 15 with 1173 views | itfcsuth | I thought this was a really odd comment on their forum: "No question our attack is better than theirs , defensively I’d argue they are better at the moment but I think midfield we are better and have better depth" Gregory, Smith, Windass & Wilks have 5 goals between them this season, Conor Chaplin has more on his own. Their midfield consists of Bannan, Byers, Vaulks & Bakinson - can't see that being a better selection than Morsy, Evans, Camara & Ball. Two midfielders in Bannan and Morsy who should be nowhere near League 1 to be fair though.
Interesting little flick through the Sheff Wed forum on 13:09 - Sep 15 with 1170 views | dirtyboy | There's a huge amount of tripe on here as there is on there, sifting through that isn't actually that difficult and the 'village idiots' are easy to spot. They've got a good team/squad, so anyone who think's we'll smash them (or them saying the same) is in the aforementioned easy to spot brigade. That being said, we do look entirely different to last season in terms of threat and still don't give away much, but there will be mistakes that we get punished for at some point. In terms of their team... Smith and Gregory, proven goalscorers a real handful with plenty of experience, Smith I really like, he'll be a handful for sure. Bannan...probably one of the best players in the league. Windass can be great on the day, will probably relish a big game like this. We know McGuinness and he wasn't bad and that was as a youngster. Mighten & Byers are also technically decent players, Byers did well with them at the back end of the season, he's improving fast. Look, let's be sensible, they've spent some money, so have we, we've got some good players, so have they. It'll be a cracking game for sure, they set up very differently to what we've encountered so far. [Post edited 15 Sep 2022 13:10]

Interesting little flick through the Sheff Wed forum on 20:14 - Sep 14 by Dyland | You prefer the Blades? Silly. You're right about the inflated sense of themselves innit. Not massively dissimilar to Town in some senses though :) |
Mainly because I used to run a Blades pub, and they were generally a good bunch despite languishing in League One. The Wednesday thread about this thread is very Springfield/Shelbyville.

Interesting little flick through the Sheff Wed forum on 11:18 - Sep 15 by itfcsuth | Of course they have a decent squad, they have invested heavily in it. They pay really well, I read over the summer Barry Bannan was still on £27k a week, which is probably why he is still playing in L1 and nobody has taken him. I would choose our squad over theirs every time though, and we are an extremely well coached side with real quality throughout every position. We go there with nothing to fear - feel it will be a score draw though. |
I’ve actually had a beer with Baz Bannan a long time ago and he is a lovely bloke who has a lot of time for his own fans.

The village green point is well made aha. I had a quick skim following your original link and it made me wonder if Man City's B team had been snuck into owl kits for a new amazon prime documentary, which surprised me given starts and odds compilers etc.. But a handful of voices saying the same thing is no more than that is it. Looking forward to what should be our sternest test yet.

Just watched a few of their recent highlights on youtube. From that limited view, they love a diagonal ball over the top and attacking space in behind. Bannan in particular is very good at picking players out from all kinds of positions. Looking forward to seeing how McKenna tackles them tactically. There are a few battles across the pitch to be won, and both teams will have to decide whether to match man for man or risk being overloaded in certain areas. This would be one at the start of the season you'd earmark for Dom Ball.

I'm not sure how we come across to outsiders, but most of us are optimistic for this season, based on what we've seen. We've been at the top of the League before under Lambert, and most of us were concerned about sustaining it as we were playing badly and winning against teams. This time feels different, as we are controlling games against teams we would usually drop points against. It might seem bizarre to outsiders, but a lot of fans see a game against Accrington as a good way to judge our progress. With that said, we are currently on course to get 115 points, and no one expects us to be at that number come the end of the season. We expected competition for the automatic spots from Sheff Wed, Peterborough and Portsmouth. And perhaps to a lesser extent Plymouth, Bolton, and the like. We still expect competition. But with things being bad for so long here, much like your own clubs fortunes, when things all seem to be going in the right direction, we're going to fully support the team, manager, Chairman and investors. What I find funny about reading Owlstalk is the whole Ipswich drew with Barnsley, so they are not that good. But Sheff Wed lost to Barnsley and Peterborough, drew with Portsmouth, and conceded 9 across those games, so Sheff Wed are great. If that was us, we'd be concerned about finishing 11th again!
