Truss dismantled in the House of Commons on 15:24 - Oct 12 by NthQldITFC | Does their constitution oblige them to go to the membersh!t for the final choice, or can the 1922 committee anoint a successor on its own? |
The 1922 comm has the power to change the rules, subject to a ballot of members I very much doubt should it do so it would lay itself open to a prolonged beauty contest, that then hands over the decision to members who include those ineligible to vote 0 17,16, 15 year old and non UK nationals who are not registered to vote in UK GE's I suspect the question is not when, but how. Soundings will have been taken and watch for the right puff of smoke

It's disgusting, is it not, that effectively any old Charlie (or young Vladimir) can elect the next subprime minister of the UK. No matter how much we despise the current cr*p of Tories, they do have a right to have a Party, but that Party shouldn't be allowed to have a defining mechanism that open to un-democratic interference. It's a threat to national security, surely. And they smell.

For the sake of balance, and in no way an apology for the Tories that also applies to Labour. Gordon Brown was not made Prime Minister by the electorate.

Theresa May was a shoe-in wasn't she? If the MPs agree on one candidate then that's that is my understanding. If they went back to the m'sh!ts (thanks our friend from somewhere near Cairns) for another 2 months of rudderless government in the middle of blackouts (not the clothing variety), repossessions and bankruptcies then they'd get the bl00dy revolution they deserved.

Nor was James Callaghan, John Major (when appointed), Theresa May, Boris Johnson (when appointed). It's the regularity of the change that would p!ss people off I'd guess. A bit Marxist. Not Karl; the brothers.

I think the problem is that the vast majority of Tory MPs are staying well clear, and any private soundings about who might wish to be the next PM are being avoided. However, they will be all too aware of the damage Truss is doing. As Tories, I doubt they are too bothered about individual cases, or a huge number of the populaces - but they are about their reputation and electoral chances being harmed. And the longer this idiocy continues the greater harm to the latter two. Maybe they can write off the next election, but it could mean a few more elections as well given the catastrophic damage Truss is doing. This is not incompetence as with Johnson, but an almost suicidal set of ideas being put into practice that have already caused immense damage, and she has barely begun.

However past experience tells us that hacked off tories tend to vote Liberal. In which case it could be mean Liberal Seats propping up a Labour government. One other point. The tory government was on death row long before the 1997 Labour landslide, therefore I suspect we may not see an election until January 2025 as they desperately cling on to power. |

I would be more than astounded if there are enough tory MP's that would be willing to put county before party. Although with that said, many less extreme tory MP's are probably closer to Starmers Labour than Truss's government in ideology.

Will find it very difficult to enable their tax cuts for the richest without it being as obvious as their last attempt to. Which is why they need to cut the size of the state provision in every area - benefits, pensions, NHS, police, libraries, everything. But then that is fundamental Tory policy. Cut taxes and shrink the state.

I always enjoy how the Tory philosophy of 'the state should not aid unless strictly necessary' applies to poor, non-white, LGBTQ+ people and women in general but NOT very rich, straight white people.

An understandable minor error there Ryorry, but I think I'm right in saying that Truss is the captain of the sister ship, the Never Give! In cryptic crossword terms, she therefore has her arse where her face should be, so what comes out of it is not a surprise.
