Tories are simply unfit to govern. The lot of them.

Braverman should be gone tonight.

Paddy McGinty told me that he couldn't get a GP appointment because of you.

Well if Mr Mcginty ever gets around to rowing a crap inflatable dinghy across the Irish Sea for 2 days he would deserve to get a GP appointment as much as me

If I had a new boss who threatened redundancies and derisory pay-rises in the name of cost-cutting I wouldn't want to go the extra mile. I'd do my 9 to 5 and use my spare time to look for another job.
No wonder the Home-office peeps went home leaving those people where they were.
Braverman is a boss who manages by fear. Organisations run like that typically have large turnovers of staff and yes-men promoted to positions beyond their capabilities. The Home Office will be a basket case while she is Home Secretary.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

This year so far, 12,000 Albanians have crossed the channel into Britain, 10,000 of whom are single, adult males. Albanians are now the majority of those crossing the channel in small boats. Albania is a safe country which is a NATO member & is going through the process of applying for EU membership. The huge increase is because Albanian criminal gangs have gained a secure foothold in organising illegal Channel crossings. Please don't try to kid me that many of these migrants are genuine asylum seekers.

So these people are being exploited, and as such shouldn't be demonised.

So, do you support getting rid of the government that designed the system that allows this to happen?

My first thought was that something like this seems to be performative and about provoking an incident because nobody/no process could be that incompetent.

But that’s not true, is it? This level of unthinking/unfeeling incompetence is pretty much par for the course in our public life. The whole Rwanda madness, for example, is the industrialised version of this.

Are they being "exploited" or are they making their own choice , thinking that they might be granted asylum in a more prosperous country or can remain in the UK & work illegally? Obviously won't be 100% either way.
The reality is that the asylum system has been overwhelmed by dubious claimants & that neither the Conservatives or Labour have a credible plan to change it for the better.

Or is the reality, the asylum system has been under a number of administrations that purposefully wanted to create a hostile environment, and so completely under-funded it, and slowed down processing of applications?

And the withdrawing from the Dublin Agreement also has an effect of the reality of the situation.

Therefore the reality is the asylum system was already overwhelmed and couldn’t cope with genuine refugees.

So what we are seeing is the consequence of adding a few thousand extra people into a broken system.

Indeed. This isn’t even a Tory issue per se or just about the last 10 years. Even though they are the very worst people to be heading this now.

The hostile environment/broken system has been decades in the making.

The dramatic increase in processing times is (I believe) quite a recent thing.

Massively increases the costs, the human misery and the impact on the wider communities.

All done for cynical political advantage.

I suspect Sunak is just giving her enough rope. Then he can get rid claiming she brought it upon herself.

My immediate thought was why did it have to be Braverman? Surely he could have got someone competent from that wing of the party.

But looking at the list, there's almost nobody competent there.

Agreed. I don’t doubt that the current sociopathic clowns are turning the screw even more now.

It was always at the heart of the issue but won’t surprise me if immigration on its own will be the new Brexit. Both are/were bad at obscuring the underlying socio-economic issues in the UK. But with a recession and very difficult times ahead for the entire country, there’s a potentially very nasty and fascist-adjacent situation looming if and when immigrants start getting the blame.

Yep, they have to have someone to blame.

Maybe it's because he can speak English.

Because now the UK has thrown off the shackles of the EU there will be enormous wealth for all. Those countries like France, Germany, Italy and Spain that he had travelled through have no such advantages.

Plus as an Iraqi and had his country wrecked by an illegal invasion - he may think the UK owes him a fresh start

A few thousand? Net migration is around 315,00 per year now. It's unsustainable.

In a country of 67 million with a low birth rate? Of course, it’s sustainable. In fact, I don’t think our economy is sustainable without significant net migration.

I’m all for transitioning away from growth as the main economic driver but I’m guessing you’ll have even bigger problems with that.

One of the men, a 29-year-old economics student from Iraq, said he had been held at Manston for 21 days after arriving in the UK by boat. “There were so many people there. They gave food, but only a little,” he said. He said he was told on Tuesday afternoon that he was being taken to London. “We were told we should go to our families or friends. I don’t have any family in the UK,” he said.

That last sentence is why I question why he has risked his life to cross the channel when he could've sought asylum on the European mainland. It's the question many people in this country ask and it's a genuine question .

Probably because a ploughmans sandwich is infinitely preferable to a jambon baguette. Clearly that's why he was disappointed with only a little food.

Gross immigration is running at over 500,000 a year, but migration reduces this to a net figure of over 200,000. Asylum applications are around 50,000 a year. This is a big step up from a previous average of 20-30,000.

The fact that this post which has been repeatedly disassembled has 3 uppies is a poor reflection on some posters on this forum and a good case study in how demonisation is working wonderfully fit the Tories when the problems have actually been created over their 12 years in charge.

Problem about this forum is someone says something different to your views and gets attacked.

Your replies haven't explained anything to GTSB except "they come here because they understand English"

Maybe you should educate him and write reason they come here instead of posting things like this which ultimately is just flannel! It might help him and other understand.

What's interesting about these stats is that something does not seem to be lining up for me.

Taken from https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-63489276

So in this case they wouldn't be the majority of cases, just the largest group but only approximately ~15% from January to June. I'm assuming, given those numbers, there has been a rather startling increase from June onwards if we have gone from just over 2,000 to 12,000 in 5 months.

So what has happened from June to now to cause such a massive increase?

In any case, there's not much we can do once they get here other than process their claims quickly and with compassion and if they are not eligible then they would need to go back to their country of origin.

The system works if we just get the processing speed up but we'd much rather spend millions of pounds trying to get the Navy involved and other very flashy but ultimately pointless policies instead of doing the boring but necessary one.

The figures here say net migration is 2.572 people per 1000 population.

https://www.macrotrends.net/countries/GBR/united-kingdom/net-migration#:~:text=T

UK population is 67.33m.

So current net migration is about 173,000 is it not? (55% of the figure you quote, assuming your figure was meant to be 315,000)
