Ownership of Portman Road 15:42 - Nov 17 with 5257 views | brazil1981 | Saw a post on another forum from a Narwich fan smug coz they own their stadium and we don’t! Got me thinking whether owning your own stadium makes you more open to new owners coming in and asset stripping, i.e. selling off said stadium, running club down and leaving club potentially homeless (Coventry obvious example)! I’m no expert on how ownership models and financial takeovers of clubs work so interested in thoughts of anyone with a bit knowledge on the subject? Am I right the council owns PR? If so guess it’s less likely they’d sell us down the river than a private/corporate owner?

Ownership of Portman Road on 15:44 - Nov 17 with 5198 views | clive_baker | Council own the ground the stadium sits on, yes. As you say that does provide an element of protection in that if a new owner were to relocate the club to a new ground it wouldn't be able to sell off the existing plot to help fund it, thus making that less likely I would say. if you really wanted to do something with the ground starting again might be the best option and moving it across and taking up some of the fan zone. Would allow for expansion in the future if required but im probably missing something obvious as to why it can't be done.

Would we ground share with Colchester whilst that is being done? (not trying to be facetious, genuine question)

Yes I've always been of the view that there is significant protection in the freehold being owned by the Council. Whilst our former and current owners have never shown any sign of wishing to asset strip and get out, you just never know who might buy the club in the future. The council, on the other hand, is stuck with us for at least another 72-odd years, as long as we abide by the terms of the lease. I've not looked at the terms of the lease, but I suppose it's highly likely that the consent of the council as landlord will be needed for structural alterations, and hence there is less redevelopment freedom guaranteed, but in all likelihood the council would want to permit anything which improves the area and the club's fortunes. Their duties under the Local Government Act 1972 would surely prevent them from giving us mates rates on the rent, and we know from previous skirmishes that there are rent reviews every so often (as you'd expect in such a long lease). But all in all, I'm quite glad that we have the council's sticky hands on the stadium rather than those of a faceless corporate entity whose identity we cannot control, and over whom we have no power at the ballot box! | | | | Login to get fewer ads

No, went up in acrimonious circumstances a few years back. Town and IBC Reach Rent Agreement 10th Feb 2012 13:09TWTD understands that Town have resolved their long-running dispute with Ipswich Borough Council regarding £654,702 in back rent owed on the land on which the Portman Road stadium stands. The agreement reached will see the Blues pay the cash over a period of six years, two years longer than had been proposed by IBC last October. 10

So basically, and keeping things polite, this is just another example of an inbred budgie fan talking rubbish?

Ownership of Portman Road on 17:31 - Nov 17 with 4422 views | NthQldITFC | They're smug because we don't own their stadium? If we did, we could live rent-free in it I suppose, like what we do in their heads! Apologies, deliberate misinterpretation of your first line. It does seem to me that we have an ideal situation, protected from corporate asset strippers. I fink that many budgies have never quite managed to get a handle on this fact, just like they have never quite managed to get a handle on any meaningful silverware.

Ownership of Portman Road on 18:46 - Nov 17 with 4146 views | ArnieM | The fact that the Club Ltd owns Carrot Rood , is an even bigger reason why “ the ole bird” will never sell her majority share to an investor. She’s sitting pretty and just pockets the pimps ( Sky Tv) money, biannually, in their sad little yo-yo existence in football, never making it out of the bottom 3 when they do ever get promoted to PL.

Unlike the rest of us, I can confirm that this poster genuinely knows what he is talking about on this subject. (The clue is in "I've always been of the view...", but I happen to know that he is definitely ITK on this, and not in a "my mate is a Steward" kind of way...)
