Quick, strong, powerful, built like an outhouse.. Could bulldoze his way through defenders, with or without the balll..Good finisher , although not particularly renouned for his aerial ability..Never found wanting when it was time to scrap. Had that bit of "spite" in his game, which complimented his power. And made him a nightmare to play against... Legend.

Levels above Stewart, imo, who really only had one good season in the top flight. Do love Stewart though, great memories

Agreed, and don't forget Brazil produced the goods when we were in the top two or three in the First Division for three years running.

Along with Beattie and Thijsenn, one of my three favourite Ipswich players of all time.

Rather like Beattie, I think tend to think his later career was blighted by injuries and off-field events.

A 1980s Marcus Stewart

Completely different types of player imo..
For starters Stewart famously lacking pace..Brazil was like a steam train.

To Brazil into context if you took the best bits of Chappers, Broady, Jacko's speed, Morsey hardness, lapis physicality, Humphs joy of playing, Harness's best deft touches, Edwards dribbling, Evan eye for a pass, Alukos ball management, Hirsts presence you would have about half the player Braze was

A very lonely one based on his time at Spurs. I worked for a company close to the Spurs training ground in Cheshunt in the early 80s. I’d often see him nursing a pint in the pub opposite at lunchtime - and still be in the pub when we returned at the end of the working day.

From what I can remember, he could be very frustrating as he wouldn’t contribute much. But then he’d get one chance and take it and win us the game. He was paid to score goals and that’s what he did.

I disagree with that. He would often drop deep and pick up the ball in midfield, play a ne two with Murhen and then get up top to score.

He had bags of energy and pace.

There is a lot of Brazil footage in this clip. Particular highlight at 2.05.

He was probably the most clinical player with his back to the goal. He only needed a yard of space and he could turn and instinctively hit the target. The days of the red and white ball flying into the net were magical.

Gates was equally good with back to goal I reckon.

Lethal.

I was lucky enough to see a lot of Alan Brazil’s games for us. He made his debut in 77/78 according to Wiki but I remember him making his mark the following season. He was essentially the replacement for Whymark whose great Town career was coming to a close (the oft forgotten Trevor Whymark was a smashing player)

He was thin, slightly stooping gate, big hair even before he embraced the bubble perm. He was quicker than he looked, great control, good shot, not bad in the air. When he got the ball he was hard to shift off it and if he was slipped in for a one on one, it was thank you and goodnight. He could score from range or tap ins. All the same to him!

He and Mariner terrified the life out of teams. Add in Gates who could score from anywhere and Wark just behind plus the two Dutchmen providing the ammo, it’s not hard to see why it was such a good team.

Yes, Mariner was the all round better footballer, but as a pure finisher, I’ve not seen anyone better than Brazil. Marcus Stewart for that year in the Premier was on a par, but of course AB had a bit of pace to him and was a slightly different player. Muhren and Thijssen were sublime at feeding him, but regardless, Brazil was devastating for those few short years in his prime.

I was lucky to see him play - along with the others of course.

He was fantastic. A great footballer. One of the best we have had. Just the fact he had so many other incredible players around him that he perhps never got the credit he deserved.

One on one with the keeper he always scored. He was a fabulous goal scorer but nothing like that all round striker that was Mariner.

I remember him doing exactly that vs Liverpool at home in front of the north (80-81)

Not Paul Mariner agreed but probably quicker

A top quality striker when at Town, but like too many at Town then, alcohol became too important and ultimately ruined his career. Not sure he is now but a few years ago he was voted ManUs worst ever signing by ManU fans.

The problem with making comparisons with the Town sides of 73-83 and other players since is that you're comparing top of the top tier players with, at best, very good "Championship" or occasionally Prem players. Even the occasional standouts, Stewart, Cresswell, Mings, and even arguably Dyer would have not featured regularly in the greatest of those three teams that Robson built, though, had we had such as those I've listed as back-up, we would have had to make room for at least a 4th star on the shirt.

He could hit the ball hard. I remember being behind the North Stand goal and ducking as his shot smashed the back of the net. I thought it was coming through, straight at me!

Gates was the best back to goal. Would turn and play the pass or would draw the foul. Usually the latter.

He never missed last orders.

I got in trouble on here years ago for saying that he had to be careful not to get too much blood in his alcohol stream. Obviously I wouldn't dream of saying it now.
