So this Govt. can afford £479million for a detention centre in France 22:27 - Mar 10 with 3989 viewsRyorry

By my reckoning, they could have given 47,900 refugees £10K each to help them settle in the UK for that.

The refugees! By getting jobs and paying taxes. It's not difficult.

Does this not then give people a safe route to claim asylum rather than risking a crossing?

Am I missing something here?

If it's a detention centre, how will they 'entice' people in? If I go in there, I'm likely to be sent to Rwanda.

This has never been about money. They've been siphoning it off by the billion, it's about optics and red meat for racists.

It's not that we can't look after our own, it's that we don't because we elect governments like this. Are we not still in living memory (maybe not just about) of "No blacks, No dogs, No Irish" type stuff after all?

The fact we've elected people thick enough to parrot this "go to the first country" stuff when we colonised so many and gave them English language and culture is mental feedback loop for these so called "patriots"

Spot on. The nation is addicted to voting for people who despise them. People who have fed them lies and untruths for decades about where the problems in their lives come from.

They wrap themselves in the British flag whilst hollowing out the infrastructure of the nation to the benefit of their pals and overseas (often hostile) backers.

This stuff is deep rooted. My father came here as an unaccopmpanied 15 year old on a boat but would never consider himself any sort of parallel to those crossing the channel. Largely because he's been reading the Telegraph for 50 years and it's drip-fed the racist anger into his brain.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

They're splashing the cash on stupid stuff now.
This is just more posturing to try to appease a small minority of just 3 or 4 - those who own the UK's right-wing newspapers.
Detention centers don't get built overnight.
It'll be way over budget and probably won't open until next year earliest.
In the mean time, the perceived problem with immigration has not changed at all.

If you want to stop the lethal boat crossings the only way to do it is in close partnership with France.

The only way?
What about being the grown up diplomatic nation we used to be?
What about overseas missions supported by the aid budget we used to have?
Working with some of the nations of origin to provide support, education and if needed asylum help at source?
What about working with Interpol to follow the money and break up the gangs?
What about instead of breaking international law, strengthening it?
What about working with UNHCR to provide safe passage for those who need it?

There's no sign of any those happening is there? If I wanted to 'stop the boats', I'd be trying everything!

The only way any of what you’re talking about works, is in close partnership with our friends over the channel, in the country many if not all of these boats come from. I truly fail to see why this is a sensational or controversial remark.

2026 apparently - makes it even more beyond stupid.

It's an absolutely blatant set-up.

As things stand, Labour inherit this half a billion spending commitment, and are forced to either go with it, and enact the Patel-Braverman immigration policy, or cancel it, which means wasting money, annoying the French Government and not having a replacement policy ready to go, because sensible solutions take time.

We already pay large sums of money to fund policing in France to stop the boats. Maybe we will get our moneysworth now.

If part of the extra money is going towards a Detention Centre who is detaining them and on what authority?

Very good point. The only detail I have come across is the following from the No. 10 press release.

"For the first time, the UK will help fund a detention centre in France to enhance the country’s ability to cope with the level of people being trafficked across the Channel. This new centre will support French efforts to increase detention capacity, allowing more migrants who might otherwise travel by dangerous and illegal routes to the UK to be removed from the French coast."

Presumably the centre will be governed by French law (as UK law won't operate there), but what offence under French law will those in it have committed?

It seems to me that it is probably little more than a holding centre, which I am sure the French are more than happy for us to pay for, because it will the lessen the eyesore of the unofficial camps in northern France.

And I rather doubt that people will be able to be confined or detained (in the manner of a Boer War concentration camp) but calling it a detention centre makes the policy sound tough.

Personally I'd have put that money towards fixing the broken legal system that's been gutted by austerity.

The thing that's actually causing the issues.

Good point. I did see personnel to speed up 'processing' as part of the infrastructure I mentioned.

Im not in favour but logically one incentivises and the other penalises so I'm assuming the argument is the numbers reduce rather than increase when people are sent to foreign prisons.
