This is what happens the government adopt the rhetoric of the far right. on 13:21 - Mar 16 by bluelagos
Am genuinely split on this. On the one hand, standing up to racists is something that sounds good and to be encouraged.
On the flip side I fear that a confrontation and aggressive actions / reactions (as we saw in Liverpool) makes the headlines and gives them the fuel of publicity.
Whatever people do I hope it will be peaceful. I don't have the confidence in myself not to get aggressive so will opt to steer clear.
Ideal world a few loons turn up on the racist side, make some noise and go home without any violence, as much as I dislike them, letting them play the victim etc. isn't good.
As vile as they are, they have a right to protest. Hopefully the old bill will ensure those in the hotel are kept safe and reassured, can't imagine how scary it will be knowing there's people outside wanting to harm you...
I understand your sentiment but maybe those refugees would feel more secure seeing a block of people standing between them and the racists that weren't coppers. Not that the police will allow that to happen of course.

These people are bullies picking on the most venerable in society. They need to understand that decent people won't stand for their racism and it is them that need to leave feeling intimidated.

I think you've all jumped ahead of yourselves. You're forgetting the Police,Crime and Sentencing Act which gives the police unprecedented power to restrict protests and marches. So you've no chance with that counter protest. The right-wing nut-job march is fine of course.
Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

Don't agree with your assessment that the police would stop a counter protest but allow the anti-refugee one.
From what I've seen, there have been plenty of examples where counter protests are facilitated and can see no reason why Suffolk police wouldn't adopt a similar "neutral" stance of facilitating protest wherever it comes from - exactly as they should.

Did you miss the memo about Suella Braverman being the Home secretary?

If they were white asylum seekers, nobody would notice, apparently. Edit, forgot to post the link.

160,000 Ukranians migrated to the UK in the past year
over 500,000 migrants in 2022
The reason these people cannot be sent back is due to Brexit, and the (not so) bright idea to leave the Dublin Accord. Despite the Prime Miniatures visit to France NO agreement was made to take any migrant back.
In fact another half a billion was agreed to pay Freench police to 'control our borders, innit'.
I suspect many of these thickos now grasp the reality - they've been had, big time. Brexit was meant to deliver an abundance of wonder. A reset back to the 1950s*
Unfortunately for these meat heads, Brexit has not only failed to deliver what they were promised, but is now wrecking the UK and it's economy.
For them the choice is whether to accept their stupidity and wonder at how they were so easily conned, or to hit out at something.
We've been here before - Cable street, 1936. And I have no doubt we will yet again. Stupidity is never a finite resource, nor is the willingness to exploit such ignorance finite either. decent folk won before, and win again.
So, as those garlic munching 'UK border controllers' would have
"Aux armes, citoyens Formez vos bataillons Marchons, marchons!"

That James O'Brien vid. The guy who's complaining about an islamic family becoming his next-door neighbours has based his opinions on a lot of newspaper 'fear' stories.
I lived in an asian neighbourhood for 5 years. I left 2 years ago. The most law-abiding community you will ever meet. When the boot boys did their car cavalcade down the streets with horns blaring and shouting their racist chants everyone went inside and locked their doors. 10 minutes every 2 years is no biggy to them. Nice people, but the guys in the cars - not so nice.

Agree. I lived in Southall in the late 90s and received nothing but respect from the locals.

One small point, cos it annoys me when I hear it. 160k Ukrainians have not migrated here.
They have not been given permanent rights to stay, rather 3 year right to remain. Most wish to return as soon as they can, like most refugees they are not wishing to leave their homes but have fled for personal safety.
Ministers saying they have migrated are wrong and misrepresenting the situation.

If we had a government determined to make the immigration service run efficiently, they might not need to be housed in Novotels for long periods or forced to hang around the streets idle while their claims are processed. Heck, they could even find jobs and become taxpayers. But the scumbags would rather keep them in limbo and use for self-promotion - citing the uncomfortable atmosphere they themselves are responsible for creating.
NB: Not directed at you or your wife for feeling uncomfortable, but those who have caused this situation to exist.
Having a process that takes so long is just a huge waste in so many ways, surely it can't be that complicated !
You can notice that the trend even before COVID was going steadily upward before increasing rapidly. But even the more rapid increase comes around the beginning of 2019, so before the boat crossing really increased which suggested something else is going on. The trend was 2019 to about late 2021 seems fairly steady and then again we see a sharp increase.
They do share a tiny snippet of a report below the graph stating that the blame is down to “antiquated IT systems, high staff turnover, and too few staff”.
But instead of fixing these problems, we spend money on bombastic policies like the Rwanda one, instead of just quietly funding and fixing a creaking service. Unfortunately those policies do not play well to the voting base that the Conservatives are trying desperately to appeal to.
OP - can you add this to your post so it's not buried please?

A quick bump for anyone out there that can make it. Sadly separate logistical issues have prevented myself and Miss Slave from making it but the time seems to be here where the decent majority need to be seen and heard!! Be peaceful.

I don’t see how anyone can think they Tories are good for the country when faced with mounting evidence like in that article. The asylum systems no different to any other service - completely fkd

People don't vote Tory for the good of the country, they vote for the good of themselves and then call themselves patriots.
At the very most there were 15 people protesting against the refugees, and over 100 of us supporting them (the refugees that is). The smaller bunch of protesters were a very sorry lot; no banners, no songs and scant support from the public. There were more police than the far-right protesters.

Good to hear. The press coverage hit the right note too

Well done, I was informed by a Stop Oil 'hippy that their slow protest was meant to pass by that way too in support. Did they make it?

Good man, and good to see how few anti-migrants turned up. But sadly this isn't the situation elsewhere in the country.
This from the Guardian on the Illegal Migrants Bill debate.
"The situation for asylum seekers in Knowsley has “deteriorated” since a protest outside their hotel — and some have been assaulted, the Labour MP for the area says.
A protest last month outside a hotel housing asylum seekers in Knowsley, Merseyside, saw a police van vandalised and fireworks thrown.
The MP for the area, Labour former minister Sir George Howarth, says “we should all be ashamed” of the situation, while hitting out at the government’s illegal migration bill in the Commons.
He says:
"I want to agree with the home secretary on one thing. And that is when she said we should choose our words carefully. It’s just a pity she didn’t do so herself."
He adds:
"There is a hotel in Knowsley with 180-plus asylum seekers. I won’t talk about that in detail because I had an urgent question on it a few weeks ago.
But what I will say is since then the situation has deteriorated to the extent that some of the refugees have been verbally abused in the street, and others have been assaulted.
And they have fled because the countries they come from were unsafe, only to find themselves in an unsafe position in this country. And I think we should all be ashamed.
It’s not just happening in Knowsley, it’s happening all over the country."

According to Wikipedia, the original theory states that, with the complicity or cooperation of "replacist" elites, the ethnic French and white European populations at large are being demographically and culturally replaced with non-white peoples–especially from Muslim-majority countries–through mass migration, demographic growth and a drop in the birth rate of white Europeans.
It does strike me that this theory plays a part in Tory policy on this, and it is interesting to note, according to November 2018 research from the University of Cambridge, that 31% of Brexit voters believe in this conspiracy theory.

Lets be absolutely clear though, thse fifteen were NOT racists. Simply people moved by the language and imagery of nazism to protest against the presence of people from a different country and race.
