we could possibly change to Ipswich City?! Sounds ludicrous and everyone laughed when the woman in the crowd suggested it if the town gains city status, but Ashton kept a straight face and said, "When all parties are ready there'll be a joint announcement".
He then goes onto say he'd never do anything to disrespect the heritage of this football club, but it's not a straight no is it?
Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Sounded like a "no, but the city bid is being tightly managed and it's not for me to start putting official statements out".
Yeah I was guessing he was referring to the town (in terms of city bid, he can't say too much) rather than the Town (the football club), but it wasn't overly clear.
I guess there are projects from Gamechanger that would impact on the city bid - is what he's referring to in terms of where the club stands. Not the name itself.

Are there any genuine, tangible benefits from being awarded "city" status?
Depends what's written in the charter. But might give the local authority a few extra powers, plus status (the Mayor can become a Lord Mayor, for example).

But not a great deal in real terms.
And more funding pots are available as well, I believe.

High business rates. High crime rate. High pollution levels. High levels of deprivation. Large immigrant community. Useless Council. Yup....sounds like we qualify well for city status.

It's a genuine question. Please can you share them?
Most of the primary research I could find on this is a bit dated. The Independent ran this article last year looking at it which seems to be a fairly balanced view of the issue:

Without being controversial here, why not just drop the ‘Town’ bit? Ipswich Football Club (IFC) reads alright to me and the name works ok for Liverpool.

I'm pretty change happy most of the time (the one off kit change and other things doesn't upset me particularly).
However...we are the Ipswich Town FC. I'd find it very difficult to move on from that.

Sounds like a good opportunity to update the branding. The current badge is horrible with the red trim. I’d love a tidy up and refresh of the badge and a return to the yellow orange trim.
