Individual awards in kids football 05:54 - Apr 12 with 5868 views | BondiBlue | What do you reckon? My daughter's just joined an under 8s team and they do POTM every game. Can't say i'm into it. My o35s team does the same thing. Not into it either but i'm going to be annoyed if i don't win player of the season!

Individual awards in kids football on 07:35 - Apr 12 with 5747 views | textbackup | Let’s be honest, they share it out over every child over the season, most weeks the person that wins it has done a cartwheel mid match or gone off crying. Seems to be the way in my daughters U9’s team. I wouldn’t think too deeply into it

Individual awards in kids football on 07:49 - Apr 12 with 5710 views | PassionNotAnger | Fairly common and generally well received. Our local youth set up tends to have parents voting for player of the match each week and then manager/coach does their award which determines which player is captain for subsequent match. Don’t see an issue with it, allows players contributions to be recognised and manger can use their “award” to ensure all players get considered appropriately etc
Individual awards in kids football on 08:19 - Apr 12 with 5660 views | LeoMuff | Also happens in my u7 team, helps with focus and motivation, initially started as player of match until all had received no matter what their performance. Now morphing into mom for a genuine good performance, although without giving to same faces every week.

As long as it's delivered in a friendly and fun environment, I don't think there's any harm and I'm sure the kids love it when it's their turn

Individual awards in kids football on 08:56 - Apr 12 with 5549 views | Plums | I think it's a good thing. We used to make POTM (and it wasn't usually the 'best' player) the captain for the next game. Served as a good motivation. I've been involved with a large junior club for many years and trying to get rid of the thousands of end of season 'participants' trophies' that ultimately end up in a skip when the kids grow up is proving very difficult.

Individual awards in kids football on 08:57 - Apr 12 with 5548 views | Asa | It’s nothing to be concerned with. My son is joint top scorer for his side this season and has had POTM trophy as many times as pretty much every one else in the team. One week he ran Needham ragged and was the best player on the pitch by miles and didn’t get it. Another week he barely touched the ball, was not involved in the game at all, having been unwell the previous day and got given the trophy, despite probably being the worst on the pitch. It’s just a gesture that gets shared around and the kid receiving it each week walks off ten feet tall.

I coach an U11 side and we don’t have MOM or anything like that. We may point out an exceptional performance in our post match chat, but otherwise we focus on the team. A few lads are slightly ahead of others and by rights would get the award. We don’t have Top Scorer award end of season either. We also try to discourage parents paying their lad if he scores.

I wish you well with that. A friend of mine got divorced and among the things he landed up having to take with him to his new place were two Tesco bags full of his son's trophies from his youth football career. Hie can't persuade his son (who's in his twenties) to come round and be the one to bin them. [Post edited 12 Apr 2023 10:11]

I had an athletics coach who used to say, "put the trophies straight in the loft, its the memories that count". He was so right.

He's spot on. I was having a chat with a coach who like me had done the U6-U18 journey and we agreed that the memories aren't the glitzy cup or league title presentations. They're the moments in games when players wen't beyond themselves or pulled off something you'd been working on or nabbed a last minute winner or equaliser.

Gotta spread the love with the littl'uns and reward them for doing something that you maybe worked on in training that they've brought into a game. Importantly, explaining to them in front of team mates the reason why they got POTM. Eg; A pass to a player in a better position rather than shooting or holding the correct body shape for defending a corner etc. Got to remember that up to this point in time, their lives have been driven by a "me first" outlook and it's really their first exposure to team environments. My club (will remain nameless here) ran an u7's 4 a side event last summer. 8mins games, small goals, no goalies allowed, no scores compiled and just letting the kids play. We had to stop proceedings 3 times as teams were deploying goalies and we got thanked by a visiting team on social media afterwards for running a great event and they then claimed to have won the "competition" as they'd not been beaten all day... Just let them play and keep them interested.

U7 football eh , this has been my boys first season and what an eye opener, before you become a parent you would never believe how seriously some people take 10 6 year olds running around on the grass !

I had my first experience of an U6s tournament last week, and had the same with one team having a GK....at one point he literally dived onto and held the ball to stop a goal as opposed to just being in the goal......the resulting punishment a penalty which is next to impossible to score past a keeper into a tiny goal and they then celebrate winning 1-0....... My son was in other team from our club so not in this game, but it does feel like a sign of things to come as you can see how much testosterone is flying around from the Dads already! I'm probably too far the other way with regards to being relaxed and talking it down and trying just to make sure they enjoy it

My 5 year old hasn't shown much interest in football but the youngest one seems to like kicking a ball about. I'm dreading it for that reason frankly, we always had the odd team when I was playing whose parents/manager and by association players who were a nightmare. These days it seems that amateur football is riven with that behaviour.

Individual awards in kids football on 08:51 - Apr 13 with 4776 views | Cheltenham_Blue | This is a good thing. Kids need to learn that sometimes other kids do better than you. This 'everyone is just as good as each other' thing, with participation prizes, (see Nodge), that has been going on for years in Primary and Secondary Schools, speaking as a University lecturer is genuinely ruining young adults. By the time we get them at 18 or 19, the first bit of criticism that they receive, destroys them, and they have no resilience at all. Kids need to learn that they can't be good at every thing, all the time, and that they are going to lose sometimes. And on occasion they are going to lose a lot. [Post edited 13 Apr 2023 8:56]

I'm on the committee of this un-named local club and can confirm that 99% of all problems we have to deal with are parent related. We've had to ask 1x Dad to no longer come along to matches (his other half now brings the lad along).

At an under 11's match recently (Non-Competitive so no leagues), I had a disagreement with a parent of the opposition as he proceeded to have a go at our linesman. It's bad enough the guy was having a go at a volunteer but the lino in question was 13 years old with ambitions to be a referee! When I called the bloke out on it he said he was 'just telling him'. As someone said above, grassroots is full of this kind of bull.
Individual awards in kids football on 09:37 - Apr 13 with 4645 views | ITFC_Forever | On the general theme of sporting parents, both my daughters play netball, and when I started watching them, I knew I'd end up being the most over-competitive Dad there and making a fool of myself. So since they've started, from the outset I made a deliberate action not to be that guy, and other than the odd "well-played", I don't comment at all and just chat to the other parents, and let the coach get on with running the team and telling them what to do etc....

I made exactly the same deliberate action during my kid's first game. 3 weeks later i've taken my first training session and am organising the kit. And celebrating goals like it's town who've just scored.
