Willing on Paul Cook to go up too! 08:47 - May 1 with 3306 viewswkj

Love him or hate him, his Chesterfield side are eyeing up a spot EFL pyramid too. I did like Paul Cook but have to admit he tried to change too much at once and never gave himself a chance. He clearly has an eye for a player though as many of our heroes were singings under his stewardship.

I do wish him well though and will be chuffed to bits to see him achieve promotion with the Spireites

Genuinely couldn't care less how he does. He did a really poor job here and rightly didn't last long. I have no ill will towards him but not arsed about him doing well anywhere else either.

No. Play-offs. Only one team goes up automatically.

It's nice to hear that he's found his level

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

Agree. No ill will to the guy but he’s pretty irrelevant to me. He seems a nice guy but too much of a ‘one of the lads’ type manager for me and don’t give a joy what he does now.

Probably works when everyone is pulling in the right direction but when it’s not working and something needs changing it unravels and I feel he was out of his depth coaching wise.

McKenna and Cook are like night and day in their management styles and I know which one I prefer irrespective of results.

I'd like him to succeed because he took a big gamble dropping down the divisions like that to help his former club. He probably could have got another job further down L1 if he had hung about a bit longer so fair play to him. Hopefully it works out for him otherwise I think he'll struggle to ever get EFL work again.

I think Cook would have eventually got us up, but not this season just gone. McKenna's game management is vastly superior to Cooks without a doubt. I remember many a game when we would be in front an looking fairly comfortable and then he'd make subs around the 70th that just killed the balance of the squad and inevitably throw leads away.

I can't take away the fact he had an eye for a player though.

Think that last point gets overstated. Think everyone knew that Morsy, Chaplin and Walton would be absolute quality at this level, it's not like he was unearthing unknown gems.

Maybe not, but given the hole we were in for players when he took over, we were punching way above our weight to land them.

I suppose, if I'm being harsh, you could say that Harper, Fraser and Pigott all came here with good reputations; all regressed to some degree.

Cook was a bit of a lemon, all told.

Not sure about that either really. The first window after the takeover was always going to see us well backed and we'd have been going for ambitious targets regardless of who was in charge.

Cook probably played a part in convincing some of them to join but it's not as if we'd have been stuck signing the likes of, with the greatest respect to them, Old Hawkins and Stephen Ward if someone else was manager.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Agree. It didn't work out here but I thought he did some good things and a necessary job in refreshing the squad and bringing in some excellent players. Always honest in interviews. Had to cope with the death of his father too. Wish him well.

Agreed. Good luck to him.

He came to us at a frankly awful time as we were beginning to look more and more like a League One side. Then when Gamechanger came in, the massive squad overhaul wasn’t likely to translate into a promotion team immediately either.

McKenna certainly feels like an upgrade given his ceiling and our trajectory into next season. But let’s not minimize the achievement of promotion that still required a run of 40 out of 42 points at the end. Cook doesn’t deserve harsh criticism for not getting the team to a level which has taken skill, time, patience and a little good luck even with the best funded squad.

A big part of that is down to the financial backing, they aren't coming for free. We've similarly punched above our weight since he left. And he was the one who created a massive great hole in the squad in the first place.

Though none of them improved under McKenna either.

Notts County deserve to go up this season and I hope they do. Cook’s management meant we had to unnecessarily suffer another season in the third tier.

I’m not overly critical of Cook, he was part of the rebuild in some respects. I was musing on here a few days ago saying he deserved a bit of credit for the recruitment 2 summers ago. Only a bit though. The damage was done by Evans, Hirst & Lambert to different degrees, they’re where the fault lies.

But Cook didn’t kick us on as much as he should’ve done, don’t think he took the opportunity that presented itself to him and we never showed a level of consistency. It’s night and day between that set up and what we’ve witnessed under KM and his team.

I’m ambivalent towards Cook tbh. No hard feelings at all, but time to look forward with excitement under this regime. We’re back.

I like him as a genuinely nice bloke, and wasn't on his case when it got sticky.
But its night and day since KM arrived. And it would appear, with hindsight, that PC was in over his depth, during his time here. Albeit, with some pretty horrible off field issues to deal with.
Be nice to see him get promoted.
