And I actually couldn’t decided

Score if the 2000 team played the 2023 team?

(Realise we are talking a championship promotion vs a L1, but I’m not sure which way I’m siding)

Surely the championship team is better than the league 1 team.

I guess the proof will be next season

That was my thinking, but just couldn’t see this lot losing…

Score draw I’ll go for 2-2

2000 all day long, not even a question.

As good and as likeable as this lot are, quite a few of them are only proven at this level. Walton for example is a good keeper but not sure I see him getting an England call up or being eyed up by Arsenal anytime soon. Prime Holland and Magilton vs an over 30 Morsy and Luongo another example? Holland was a top performer for Ireland in this period too.

Few exceptions might be Clarke > Croft but that's about it.

Certainly think the 2000 side were more flaky, they wouldn’t have won 4 clutch away games with the pressure like 23 did.

They were the best footballing side in the championship by a mile though.

The only Muff in Town.

The 2000 team didn't have the advantage of having better players, a bigger budget and a better coach than everyone else either. It's a lot easier not to flake when you've got better and more players than everyone else!

Crewe at home is the only example I can think of that would class as a flake from the 2000 team? Losing away at Birmingham the following week wasn't really a flake imo.

And they also came back from 2-0 down in the playoffs and 1-0 down at Wembley.

They were difficult to brake down, that's for sure.

2000 team was better. Can't see many of our current team dislodging them. Space for Davis, Hirst, Chaplin, Broadhead on the bench maybe.

Mad that this is the first time in 20 odd years that you could make a very strong case for us having the best team in our division. Obviously easier to make that argument at a lower level but it's lovely innit.

Suppose matching them up, all over the park, the 2000 lot do come out favs.

Chaplin and broadhead would cause problems though.

Wilnis played the majority of our games at RB/RWB in our promotion season. Wilnis was better, but I think Clarke has more potential.

Agree with your main point. The team 2000 went up and finished 5th in the Premiership, so bit hard to pick anyone out of that side and say they were worse without seeing them in the Championship.

Well both teams would score.

I'd go for 2000 1 (Jono) 2023 1 (Hirst) with 2023 leading at HT. Big effort from 2000 2nd half and couldn't quite get the winner after Jono equalised, Broady going close in injury tme too.

Morsy and Magilton having a right old ding dong.

Yes and a few others were on the cusp of England call ups too - Clapham and Stewart in particular.

This lot have a long way to go to reach anything like those heights.

Forward options in that team were ridiculous too, Johnson, Stewart, Scowcroft and Naylor. As much as I like Ladapo...

2000, but believe this team with this manager would beat any other Town side thereafter. Royle's play off side would make for a cracking high-scoring game, while it would be very cathartic to see this lot trying to break down Mick's play off side.

Reading this thread I'm very grateful that I am just old enough to have firsthand memories of Burley's team in those 00/01 and 01/02 seasons. I was 8-9 at the time and any younger I'm sure I wouldn't be able to remember it enough for it to be meaningful. Also makes me feel 'old' to consider that so many fans in their 20s now will have no recollection of that era. Not having been at PR this weekend feels much less painful when I think of seeing Wilnis' finish past Barthez, or Armstrong's header in front of the North Stand against Inter Milan. 👌

In a one-off game, the 2000 side probably shades it. But both competing in a 24-team league I think the current side would finish higher. There's more strength in depth, they can cope with the inevitable injuries and suspensions more easily.

I was thinking about something similar earlier the 2000 team obviously went on to get 5th in the Prem so better
BUT who played the better more attractive football? I remember Burley's team being very good but not sure about more attractive 23 years ago now so memory is a little hazy.

Also Burley’s team - beyond any question and at a higher level too.

I do feel like there’s a bit of recency bias understandably in this thread. But there’s no way a team that won 4/15 in division 2 is beating a team that nearly qualified for the champions league.

Well, like Noggin I don't get what you are saying - and for old money it's division 3
