Do we want to be in the Premiership? 13:24 - Jun 1 with 6313 viewsThisIsMyUsername

We probably do, but to me the Premiership has become a completely soulless money making machine. Everything seems geared to drain as many £ as possible out of those who want to follow it, and I'd hate to have to be a supporter of a Man City or a Chelsea, for example, and watch a team full of mercenaries who are earning in a week what most people earn in half a lifetime.

I don't really enjoy watching any Premiership stuff, even just highlights on MOTD.

From what I can recall from the last time we were there, it didn't seem to be that way. It still seemed like a load of solid blokes (the Keanes and Vieiras, for example) who'd happily play for free.

I worry that 'success' in the Premiership comes at the cost of some of the soul of a club.

Would ITFC have to 'sell out' within a few years after getting up there, if we wanted to be pushing towards the top of the table? Would we be any different somehow?

Would it be better somehow to be a consistent yo-yo team?

Maybe I'm talking rubbish simply because we've become used to being a Championship/League 1 club over the past 20 years.

Thoughts?

It's a weird one isn't it ..well for me it is anyway

As much as I'd like to see us testing our wits against the best in England and Europe , would it really happen ? Would we be able to get there let alone sustain those types of games ? Or would it be simply a cannon fodder exercise ?

All I know is I want to enjoy my team winning games whatever league we're in

If we give it our best shot who knows what could happen in the long term

If we could establish ourselves as a mid table ,sometimes pushing Prem team yeah why not

For me, my enjoyment is based on the development and visual progression of the club.

After the Robson years, I’ve enjoyed the Burley and McKenna years most as there were clean plans on show. And although Burley took a longer time to achieve success, you could see what was happening and the jigsaw pieces coming together. That’s how it feels now.

I’d sooner take Premier League football than the Evans years which felt like we were dying from the inside out.

I think I have only ever seen this question asked by fans of teams that are either:

outside the Premier League;
on their way to being relegated from it.

Depends how we do. If it was like Norwich and going down as soon as you got up and knowing that all season, then no.

But I could cope with a relegation battle with a chance of staying up. Even better, other, well-run teams like Brentford and Brighton have shown what can be achieved.

Totally agree with the OP , the Premiership is simply money driven , with foreign owners that treat the club like a toy , foreign players that are paid ridiculous money , but have no allegiance to the club .
Sky has ruined the football experience , dictating KO times and boring us with incessant comments by numerous " experts " .
MOTD used to be a must view ......not any more for me .

The Premiership is made up of 3 groups of clubs , top 5 with buckets of money , bottom 5 battling to stay up , but overpending to do so and then the rest resigned to being mid table . There's a real danger the Premiership will become as boring as the Scottish football , with the honours shared around a handful of clubs each year .

As for ITFC , I can still remember the excitement of taking on the big boys , who can forget Fabian's goal against Man U , or the thumping we gave Man U years before , or Marcus Stewart's goalscoring .

The chances are that the current owners , who are doing such a brilliant job in moving the club out of the doldrums , will sell out at a profit if we were to get to the Premiership and we would end up with some foreign owners .

Let's enjoy the well earned promotion this year and enjoy our time in the Championship before we worry about the Premiership , but there is a concern that the club would be very different if we did reach the top division .

Yes because I want Town to win every game they play, and no because I despise the money orientated aspect of the Premier League. There seems to be near universal agreement on here, and it's interesting that you hear it from clubs on completely different trajectories too; take Norwich for example.

We all know plastics and glory hunters who 'support' Man U or Chelsea etc. from afar who, I would say, don't really feel the game, or money-obsessed folk whose football souls take a back seat to their egos.

It's an old cliche but true that money has ruined the game for all the reasons far more eloquently put earlier in this thread. The trouble is that you can't decouple the competition from the finance - or at least it's hard to see how in this mercenary world - and it's the fans and the relegated clubs who pay the extortionate price for the willy-waving owners pathetic ego competition.

The Premier League is a microcosm of modern Britain - unhealthy, selfish and ultimately unsustainable.

Can we win the Championship and ask not to be promoted? lol!

As i've said a few times about L1. Barrow or Barcelona, don't care who we're playing as long as a) we're playing attractive football b) winning games with a fair bit of regularity.

Let's be honest, we won't do that in the PL.

It's the journey not the destination though right?

Plus an FA cup and League cup win would be great. More chance of doing both if we are in the Premier league.

It's accepting that if we get to the PL, even with significant investment and a fair wind we are likely to never be anymore than a Top 8 side.

No trophies for the league unless being 'best of the rest' is an achivement.

I agree however we want to be there to test ourselves against the best, but we are likely to lose more than we win every season. Is that what we want season after season with no chance of a trophy outside of the League Cup and FA Cup?

I don't know if anyone else shares my view but I have never been massively concerned with what division we were in (and I include League One - to a degree).

The best seasons I have had following Town have been 91/92, 99/00, 00/01 and 22/23. Four seasons across three divisions. The worst were three relegation seasons across two divisions.

The main thing I want to see is us playing good football, going into matches with a decent chance of winning and players who look like they care. The way Holland, Magilton and Mogga did 23 years ago. The way Chaplin, Morsy and Wolf did.

I'm 43. My first match was as a 2 year old in 1981, so I appreciate I missed the times we were one of the best teams in the world and regularly one of the best in England. So my view might be skewed.

I'd love to be back in the Premier League for many reasons, but a lot about it would annoy me too. I quite like the fact that when you meet a fellow Town fan they know a hell of a lot about the club. I work with a Leicester fan who hates the fact that 90% of their social media engagement is from people all over the world that had never been to a game and had piggy backed their Premier League success.

The Championship feels like home and the Premier League and League One felt like holidays. Ultimately I think if we went up and could be one of those teams like Brentford, Brighton or Palace that might challenge for Europe but might be in a relegation battle, I'd love the excitement for a while but don't know how I'd feel about being a yo-yo club as we've never been that.

But let's be honest. Anything has got to be better than a decade or two or near yearly decline in every aspect of the club. I'm just enjoying having our club back whatever that entails.

Got to be honest, I’m not that fussed. I hate so much about the Prem league. The fact that bar a miracle there’s only a few well heeled clubs that will win it, the rest is dog eat for survival. Do we really want to simply fight to survive? I hate the fear of being walloped by one of the money balls clubs and I absolutely obscene money the players get.

So I’d happy settle for being one of the top teams in the championship with a regular pop into the Prem ever few years to top up the coffers.

That said, I reserve the right to change my mind if we get promoted and manage to hold our own for a few seasons.

Yes of course. It’s the best league in the world and although our club has a great history, I’d like to think it has an even better future.

I just want us to keep improving on and off the pitch to become a team who can compete with the best and a force to be reckoned with again.

I agree with a lot of this. There’s something soulless, plastic and obscene about the PL, particularly in how it’s structured. There is a real stench around so many aspects of it.

When the PL was created in 92 I watched a lot of the games in the initial years, whether we were in it or not. But it was obvious even then what would happen and my interest in it has waned over the years. I watch more EFL than I do PL these days, unless I’m with my Newcastle chum.

But it is what it is. Our club is where it is. I think in sport as in life you should always strive to be the best you can so despite my misgivings I want to see us reach the Premier League if at all possible. It’s a cliche but it is about the journey and the PL is the destination.

My one wish is that the owners are true to their word and the club becomes truly a community club. That’s its strength. I want it to retain its identity- the most important thing it’s recovering since the shameful Evans years. That means not over reaching itself as Leicester City have done.

Much as I enjoy the past/nostalgia, I don’t live in it. Football is not the same as pre 1981 and the likes of ourselves, Derby and Forest competing every year at the top are gone. So we can never be an established PL club, but we can do well over a period as Brighton, Saints etc have done.

Over optimistic? Maybe but let’s give it a go. Some of my favourite seasons were the late 90s Burley years doing just that.

Agree with everything. I sat in Sheepshanks office a few weeks after the play off final and he spouted on about the exciting season ahead and the chance to watch Arsenal, Spurs, etc at Portman Road. My response was I only go to Portman Road to support our club, the opposition means nothing to me.

When everyone goes on about the plastic, money grabbing premier league I feel sorry for them. Stop and take a look at the Premier League table we have seen the vast majority of those teams play at Portman Road since we were relegated from the top flight.

Money grabbers hang on to their money, there are very few top flight teams that don’t spend it all. The reality of being back in the big time will not be a whole lot different that the past season. It isn’t about the false image portrayed by Sky it is about enjoying our club playing the supposed best teams in the land. Only a handful of the teams we would play are giants, the majority are just like us, or like we aspire to be.

When we get there enjoy it, dream about playing in Europe and winning a cup.
