It’s intriguing how many of us are still scarred by Slater, almost 30 years later. There was that televised wonder goal he scored for west ham that got us all excited. And at the time, us spending 750k was a big deal. It all sounded so promising…

And in reality he wasn’t that terrible at all and we’ve hundreds of inferior players since him. But if you don’t deliver on hype, you’ll always be a disappointment. Even if that hype wasn’t of your own making.

It’s probably because we have to get to the early days of ME to find such a relatively expensive signing who performed so poorly - and by that point I wasn’t a slightly wide-eyed teenager.

I think Slater’s whole career was one of never living up to potential really.

1. Sam Parkin - did well for Swindon. It was obvious from 20 mins in from his first home game he couldn’t play at Championship level.

2. Mark Venus - makeweight in the Steve Sedgley deal. Didn’t think he was up to much and given that I didn’t think Sedgley was all that it was obvious Venus was a 30 year old on the slide journeyman. Er, wrong. Totally wrong. Six years with us, 148 appearances, he was excellent. Heck of a shot too. What a brilliant bit of business by Burley.

1. Slater. So much hype, so little end product (Albeit he had a lot of dross around him)

2. DJ Campbell. 10 goals in 17 games then seemed to vanish.

1.Slater saw his goal for WHam but was so light-weight
2.Tarrico awsome player bought with Paz

Slater : Along with it seems many others bought into Lyall telling us what a 'special' player he was. In the end he was OK to be fair, but nowhere remotely near special.

Tarricco : Makeweight in the Paz deal? After his first game when he was run ragged and looked like a rabbit in the headlights (Bolton?) I never expected to see him in a Town shirt again. He could be a new thread, worse debut from a quality signing.

Snap
Paz went the other way great debut nothing after. Nearly was my 1.

Venus probably the best shout so far.

Can't see past finidi george for biggest disappointment given it was burley who signed him, and burley had an otherwise excellent record in the transfer market. Bullard and chopra etc were signed by clowns so what did we expect.

Older school, but hey.

1. Sam Parkin surely? He was banging them in left, right and centre for Swindon. Thought he'd be a cut-price Paul Mariner but he ended up just looking lost.

2. Mark Venus - makeweight in the Sedgley deal with Wolves, at the time I thought we'd got the worst of the transfer. Turns out I was very wrong...

1. JET, although looking back he was great fun to watch when he'd pull off something mental.

2. Probably Walters? I think I underestimated how effective Daryl Murphy would be for that season as well.

Aluko on a free worth a shout as well given fan feeling at the time. Burgess would be up there but was a fair wedge for a L1 CB.

Parkin because it was BFJ's last roll of the dice? Fair point but we were financially rooted by then so i wasn't expecting much, just hoping.
