2-1 last minute winner.
We really should be getting a central defender before the season i’m unsure Burgess is up for it.

Agree, I do think we need another CB in through the door, not least to cover for any injuries, but I'd bet that KM, MA & team are currently working on it.

I never for one moment say its all over for us i just made a comment about Burgess hot cut out for championship football and all the bed wetters jump on me and assume i’m moaning ffs you children.

It's a pre-season friendly. When are people going to realise that the result is largely irrelevant?

One person who went on record as agreeing with you was a certain Mr R Robson.

I don't know whether everyone has heard, but he was later knighted.

But you literally posted that 'We got away with it...'. What did we get away with?

We got away with having an ok defence because we were on the front foot so much last season. I just don’t think this defence is as good as people think. The championship is a lot tougher and we will have to defend a hell of a lot more. We need some experienced cover, l really believe that.

Trouble is he isn't wrong defense wise. We really could do with some championship experience at the back. We will get found out in this league. We got away with it last season.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

The defense didn't get tested like it will this season. It's a different kettle of fish in the championship. I just think we need a bit more experience at the back.

You’re right - we’ll have to step it up a level in most matches this season if we are to hold our own. And yes, I think another defender, especially an experienced one, would be nice.

But that’s very different to saying ‘we got away with it last season’ which implies the defence wasn’t very good but other teams didn’t capitalise on it.

I explained the got away with it bit above.
I do believe we got away with it because we were on the front so much last season. It made the defence look better than it really is. We need some experience.l really believe that.

We do need cover at the back as well as the ‘push’ it would give wolf, burgess etc to have competition but for those in meltdown about how much better the championship is please remember we just dominated a decent championship side (Preston) and only conceded when the kids came on on both sides, that’s not even mentioning how our defence coped pretty well against Burnley and Rotherham last year.

It is not the end of the world

We had four tough away games during our run in last season, none of which we spent camped on the half-way line. Conceded 0 goals.

That was our stronger team of the two that lost. But both are weakened. This weekend is more for the purpose of the classic "minutes in the bank".

No it isn’t, this line up is much stronger.

Nice we can debate it though, shows the depth.

RIP Sir Bobby

Either way they were poor results. No such thing as a friendly. You should be winning all your games. It breeds confidence. That defence isn't strong enough for the championship.

I've always believed that pre-season friendlies are there to get match-fitness up, work on what you want to do when you get on to the real thing, try different things/people, all without the pressure of the result mattering. So long as we've further contributed to being match-fit come 6th August and have learnt something useful from these games, I personally couldn't care less about the results.

Definitely somewhat agree with you.

Being 3-0 up[ and dominant against teams who barely attack is not going to happen this season (or rarely if it does).

We are also going up a league so the players are better and finish better etc.

Some people won't like to hear it, but you're probably right.

This is how it is, but there are those that just don’t want to hear it. Just about all of the squad got game time into their legs today. If one believes every game is important and must win, then logic says we should have played one game today with our best team and let the squad plays sit it out. Personally I can’t see any merit in that. As long as we take something from each friendly and get fitter, that’s enough. Results? Who cares? Not me.

As for the Championship, the way some are talking about it, anyone would think it’s the Champions League. Massive step up, I hear. Well I saw most home games and a few away from mid 90s relegation to 2019 and the standard must have rocketed in the past four years. Oh, and watching plenty of Championship games last year, I must have been unlucky because most teams were ordinary or worse.

We are unlikely to score 101 goals and are very likely to concede more than 35 meaning that extraordinary gd of 66 wont happen. But I seriously think we will be ok. We defend as a team and attack as a team. That’s the key to how we play and the hallmark of a good side. That team ethic will serve us well. We are not going to crush teams like we did Feb onwards, but neither are we going to get kicked around like QPR did second half of the season.

Would a De Vos or Mowbray/Venus combo or a John Wark type defender add to us? Yes. But if we can’t find somebody like that I’m confident our lads will do just fine. They deserve the chance.

We clearly do need a centre back, and one who’s going to compete with Burgess rather than be a veteran who can barely be called upon.

My concern is today’s goals came from failings of the pre-Christmas run last year - deflections, failure to deal with the loose and being broken on quickly after losing possession.

I’m pretty sure I recall McKenna losing his cool - well, the nearest thing to it when it comes to him - over deflections at some point last season and saying it can due to the closing down angle from the defender. Post ‘rant’ we didn’t seem to be caught by deflected goals so hopefully something which will be cleared up over the next couple of weeks.

McKenna would have given every player and the team as a collective many instructions yesterday.

Not one of those instructions would have been to win the game.

I doubt very much that he would have told them to go out there and lose the game either.

Yes it did. Over 180 minutes against a team that ran away with the league.
