If we’re going back to stalking signings, he shouldn’t be that hard to miss given he has the longest neck in football!

Be a good signing if true, especially if it’s permanent.

Explains our squad photos.....this is definitely happening!

McNally Among Defenders On Town's List 28th Jul 2023 20:44
TWTD understands Burnley central defender Luke McNally is on the Blues’ list of potential recruits as manager Kieran McKenna looks to add to his squad as the transfer window moves into its final month. 6

Phil reported that Hutchinson was on our list as well, and we signed him a couple of days later. Fingers crossed...

Luke McNally would be a good signing.
It'd be interesting to see how that impacts on the existing CB's at the club. You'd think either Burgess or Edmondson would then move on, with Baggot potentially kept, as 3rd or 4th choice back up.

Am I right in thinking he’s left footed, but plays as a RCB?

He wasn’t in the Burnley squad at all last night which played.

Does it really matter? As long as he’s a decent centre back he should be able to play both sides. Chambers and Webster were right footed, but they preferred to play on the left.

According to transfermarkt, he can play both sides.

Linda McCartney. She’d still be more mobile than Douglas.

Maybe and also heard linked with Heather Mills. But not sure it has legs

I do think a left footed CB makes a difference though, particularly with the way we play and how advanced Davis plays. We looked a lot more comfortable with Burgess in that position on his natural side than we did with Edmundson.

Two centre halves (left sider and right sider) with Edmundson going still wouldn't surprise me at all.

I think being comfortable on the left is the most important thing, rather than being left footed. Edmundson never looked happy there.

We're only signing both if we're looking to change both starting centre backs. Neither will be coming to sit on the bench/fill out the squad.

I think we'll go into the season with Woolfenden, Edmundson, Burgess and possibly McNally, but a new signing all the same. Baggott will go out on loan and Edmundson's situation will be reviewed in January.

I'd say, even if we get someone through the door, only injury or illness will prevent Woolfenden and Burgess being the starting pair at Sunderland.

Edmundson was fine there in 2021/22, in fact when we signed him I'm sure I read somewhere that despite being right footed he liked playing as a left sided CB. It's only when his form dipped last season that people started to question him playing there, but I'm not sure playing on the left was his main issue, more that he never really seemed match fit and was prone to lapses in concentration.

His form dipped the moment John McGreal, followed by McKenna, brought back Woolfy and moved Edmundson over to the left.

He never looked comfortable there. Hence McKenna brought in a more defensive left back in Dominic Thompson for extra cover as Edmundson tended to drift more to the centre.

It changed when he was asked to play more football from the back.

He couldn't pass his way out of trouble with his right foot and gave the ball away many many times. Leaving himself out of position etc.

A fit Edmundson on the right hand side of central defence is Championship quality. Unfortunately, he's rarely been fit and rarely played on the right.

The problem is we have two good defenders who can play out from the back on the right but not so much from the left, though I do like Burgess.
