I think the idea is to write the bloke off as a waster before he’s kicked a ball for us. Similar to writing Williams off after a game and a bit because of an og and a roasting off a multi million pound player when exposed cold.

What underpins all this wailing and teeth gnashing is the disappointment that we’ve not signed £30m of PL players this summer and replaced our entire L1 rubbish team. I mean, that’s what you do with your fantasy football team isn’t it?

Burgess was written off before the season by one poster. Hirst was deemed a poor signing in January because his loan at Blackburn was poor. Humphreys and Baggott - not good enough send them on loan etc etc. bring in better. How hard can it be?

We failed to land Simms, Messi, Cuthbert, Dibble and Grub? Did we? Have the club said this? Or is it just talk, rumour and agent nonsense? What’s the evidence?

People are of course entitled to their views. It’s what the forum is for, but we do seem to have a high percentage of unhappy people on here and I’m struggling to see why.

Hmmm…except I’ve not written him off at all and have clearly stated that. Perhaps you haven’t bothered to read it properly before commenting, aren’t capable of comprehending anything more nuanced than your own rigid view, or deliberately misrepresent other posts in an attempt to discredit them? Either way, doesn’t really help the quality of the discussion/debate…

Not sure why you’re struggling to follow. My original post was on topic - considering whether DS is likely to improve the team immediately or not, as per Ashton’s previous comments etc. I didn’t claim to know the answer. You and a few other posters then chose to focus on one comment about his possible current condition (out of several paragraphs in my post) and I just responded to you.

I initially suggested that he MIGHT not be in ideal condition yet and MAY need a bit of time (to be at optimum level), just going on his photos. It seems that others picked up on it too, yet the possibility was scoffed at. I didn’t say that he couldn’t play due to fitness, wouldn’t score or was a bad signing, which was the way it was made out in the replies.

However, I qualified the condition comment slightly in response by saying that you wouldn’t usually see a bit of a belly through shirt and slight double chin when players are usually so lean that they almost look skinny when you see them in normal clothes. Especially at that age. Top footballers are usually around 10% body fat, your range of up to 20% isn’t typical. People dismissing it because he played for Spurs the other night doesn’t mean anything, see comments re Sterling.

Anyway, whatever. If he’s not at optimum now, I’m sure he will be very soon.

"slight double chin"

WTF.

Don’t know how to add photos I’m afraid but it’s not that difficult to grasp. Look at how defined the jawlines/cheekbones etc of most athletes are due to low body fat. I probably shouldn’t add more fuel to the fire by commenting further as it’s only helping those intent on sensationalising what started off as one small reference in a lengthy post 😂

So he extends his contract at Tottenham and then comes here?

If true it’s a pointless exercise; just means they can screw us over if he does well. McKenna may like him but it’s not a sign of long term team building.

Use the available talent to its max while you can, only south long term planning you can do in this league now it seems. Adapt and punish the weak. Dog eat dog now in this championship

You said ‘He doesn’t look in the best condition in his signing photos so may need time etc.’. And you then have the brass neck to talk about helping the quality of the discussion/debate?? I presume you put that in for a laugh?

With regard to my capabilities and ‘rigid view’, the fact you feel the need to be rude enough to suggest that without actually knowing me says an awful lot about you.

Perhaps you’d like to explain it.

The comment was about body composition/condition, not fitness in general. I didn’t claim to know absolutely either, as was made clear. The possible indications have been explained twice already. If you research it a bit more (the difference between 20% body fat and 10% etc), you’ll see what I meant.

Have read Harry Kane’s done this a few times over the years…

I don't really care about that, it's more that you reckon you can see this from a player popping on a shirt he's never worn before (so might not be the right size) and doing a photoshoot (in which there's artificial lighting etc.)

The fact that you can make any comment on someone's body composition/condition in these circumstances is quite exceptional.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Who would be the better loan player, John Jules or Scarlett..?? JJ looked really good until he injured himself.

I think it’s totally possible to both trust KMs judgement and not be bowled over by this loan. I think that’s where I am. I’m sure that in your job not everyone cheers your every decision from the rafters, but because you’re good at what you do they trust your judgement and go with your decision.

STRAW MAN ALERT! I've not said we should cheer his every decision from the rafters. I'm not bowled over by this loan either, but that's not what Herbs said.

He said, "he's not ready to improve us in the Championship" and described him as "squad filler" whilst also saying he "fully trusts McKenna". To me those things are incompatible. If you fully trust McKenna then I think Scarlett must be a bit more than squad filler.

I don't know, which is why I keep a dignified silence on the player's abilities, and it makes me smile to see people confidently predict things like "he's not ready to improve us in the Championship". I don't know how they (and Herbs isn't the only one by a long stretch) can confidently assert that.

Unless of course they think McKenna has been looking for squad filler that isn't ready yet, and they fully trust he's found it. In which case I'm totally wrong.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

It's the moon-on-a-stick world we live in these days Churchers. And the ability to tell the world your immediate reactions to everything without any settling in period in your noggin.

Hate to do a downer on deal old Frimmers but he's offered up a classic example recently. He described Baggott as not good enough, can't see how he's going to make it. Then actually goes to a game and watches him live (once) and now he's a future Prem player. Next time Baggott makes a mistake he'll be back down to non-league level I'm sure.

What a silly world we live in, Churchers.

It's quite an incredible reference though.

You're rather naive if you thought you could post that a professional footballer from the very highest level might have a double chin and be able to ascertain his body fat percentage - all from a picture - and no-one would comment on it.

I don't know why sports scientists bother with BMI testing equipment when they can just glance at a few photos.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

It is a strange old world. Some of the stuff on here has obviously been trolling, other views worryingly sad. I always knew transfer window would bring the numpties out, but not the volume.

So what were my hopes for this transfer window? I hoped we’d sign Hirst but didn’t think it likely after the half season he had here. He was too good! I hoped we’d sign up McKenna (crucial) and Luongo. I also hoped we’d extend Morsy’s contract. I felt it important we replaced Keogh with something better. Terry Butcher picked up CH experience as a gap to fill on Life’s a Pitch and he knows a thing or two about the game. I also felt a back up/challenge to Hirst and a goalscoring midfielder would be good.

So have my expectations been met? Not all - yet. But mostly they have. The CH situation bothers me. I think Burgess and Woolfy are fine but strength in depth there? The loanees? Don’t like loans as a principle but it’s how the game is. Scarlett will be an asset. The other two - time will tell. Way too soon to judge. Especially Williams for whom some have already written off. Patience and time.

As to what the club’s expectations were, whether the recruitment team/Ashton/KM have done a good job? I’m really looking forward to hearing what they have to say. I just don’t know how this works and have no idea what they’ve been up against. Nor do we really know what they are planning. Yes, they’ll spin it, but one can usually read between the lines to an extent.

Most of all, it feels like the club is being run properly. Had we been splurging Simms / Piroe level money I’d be worried, given where the club is, FFP etc.

It’s ironic that you’re dismissing any notion of a player possibly not being in optimum condition as “naive” whilst also referring to sports scientists using “BMI testing equipment” in the same post.

I saw the same image and thought that it was an unflattering photo. Looked like Scarlett had a bit of a belly.

But then your brain kicks in and you realise he's a professional footballer, with probably 10 -15% body fat, he will be unbelievably ripped and athletic and it's clearly just weird lighting or the shirt was sitting weirdly.

At no stage should you be deciding he's the second coming of Steve McNulty. Especially when the internet is full of images of Scarlett playing two days ago and looking in top athletic condition.

Unless that's a hell of a Meal Deal the media team went out and got him!

I didn’t decide that he’s “the second coming of Steve McNulty” at any stage though, did I? Other posters, who have shown that they don’t have any knowledge on the subject, chose to exaggerate what I said.

Did you read about the examples I gave of Sterling and Kane, because you seem to think that it’s impossible for a player’s condition to change slightly?

Not usually visibly in the two days since they played at Craven Cottage.

Not even sure you can change that much physically over the Christmas Day and Boxing Day spreads my Nan used to put on.

So we should interpret photos now, but only when it suits.

We definitely shouldn’t be banging on about this into a second day. I’m gonna accept that people get their knickers in a twist about the slightest thing on the internet and bite my tongue. No more from me on this. Hopefully we sign someone later and there’s something else for people to get their teeth into…👍🏼
