The 92 club - any players managed it? 14:11 - Oct 27 with 2762 viewsIllinoisblue

I’m assuming it’s incredibly unlikely that any player will have played at all 92 league grounds. Career trajectory would have to be something like top couple divisions for a few years then work down the leagues. Even then, with injuries and teams going up/down seems like it would be near impossible to play at all 92.

Tom Lockyer must be close if he stays fit this season, reckon he's close to completing the '116'.

Might be misremembering but was that not a factoid about Steve Claridge, given that he played for about 500 different clubs?

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Thinking about it we'll be one of the few he's missed, given we haven't played Luton at home in ages. It's the passing ships scenario of promotion and relegation that makes it as all the harder. Luton will need to hang around for another year won't they 😉

According to the Guardian Steve Claridge has indeed, as have Trevor Hockey and Alan Durban. However the article I looked up is from 2003 so (a) more may have joined since and (b) some of the 92 that those 3 clocked up aren’t League grounds any more.

Wasn't there a Fulham player who climbed the divisions with them? He'd be among those close.

Given how recent Luton were still still a non-league club, a couple of their players might well have played at a lot of the 92 league grounds.

Barry Hayles?

Just had a look, Sean Davis, but he only made 169 league appearances, so unlikely unless they were deliberately only picking him for games to maximise the grounds he'd played at.

Possibly Leon Britton? Possibly won’t have done it, as I expect it’s super difficult, but he spent multiple seasons in each division. You need to find someone similar who’s a club legend and stalwart of a team that rose from L2 to the Prem. And who was good enough to play for a year or three in the Prem. I can’t imagine there’s many, if any.

(Or a journeyman who dropped down the leagues over time, after seeing the mention of Claridge).

We were going interested in him as well. Everyone had kittens when Phil ran the story “urgh, fancy only being able to look at non-league players”. Worked out pretty well for Leicester.

One of the challenges with completing the 92 is that is meant to be the grounds of the teams currently in the top four divisions.

The list of grounds changes most seasons as clubs move stadiums and we have promotion and relegation between L2 and the National League.

I completed the 92 a few years ago, Morecambe v Crawley. I had visited over 100 grounds mainly due to stadium moves - Highbury, Layer Road, The Dell, The Den, Highfield Road, The Goldstone Ground, Withdean, Manor Ground, Upton Park, White Hart Lane, Filbert Street, old Stoke ground, Gay Meadow and the old Northampton ground were among those that no longer existed so I had to visit the current ground too.

So happy days at Morecambe, The following Monday, Spurs were given permission to move into their new stadium and I went back to 91. Have since managed to see a game at the new Spurs stadium, it is spectacular.

I am now back to 86 grounds as I have yet to visit the new Brentford stadium + Salford, Harrogate, Barrow, Hartlepool and Wrexham (all promoted into the league). As I got closer to completing the set, I made an effort to go to games at the outstanding grounds. Mainly lower league grounds, which were good fun. This was peak Ipswich being crap era so enjoyed going to a game with nothing invested in the outcome and enjoying speaking to fans and watching the game. Having done this twice, I do not have the same hunger to get to the six grounds I have yet to visit and a shame most of them are a long way away. I might get second wind at some time but this does feel like a game where you constantly chase your tail.

I seem to remember, that a recent televised game at Craven Cottage, the commentator said to his co-host, Lee Dixon, that you've played at every league ground in the country apart from Craven Cottage. The reason being, that when Arsenal had played Fulham at Craven Cottage, Dixon had been injured, missing the game. Dixon wnet on to say, that as he was living close to the Fulham ground at the time, he was tempted to sneak in one evening for a quick kick about on the pitch, just to say that he had completed all the 92 grounds.
