Good grief... could you imagine a fit Kevin Beattie putting a foot on the ball... sizing up the opposition ala Woolfie and given full licence to play in that manner... it makes the mouth water, not to mention the eyes!

Regarding the 1981 first team, Walton or Hladky might have got a look in because Paul Cooper was the only non-international. But it's difficult to think of any others at the moment, although Davis and Williams, for example, might be contenders, when a bit older, because of their likely higher ceiling. None of them. It is fantastic to have a team to be proud of again, but the difference between teams that were genuine title contenders at the top table of English football and now are chalk and cheese. Hopefully great things are around the corner and this current squad are remembered forty years down the line.

That is actually fair enough.... Bobby was the McKenna of his day in many ways.id like to think he like KMc was getting the absolute maximum from his group as a bonded team .. but even Sir Bob never saw the pinnacle of what The Beat could have been (despite him being hailed as our best ever!) along with the rest of us which is why I picked him out.

Good call, very versatile as he had to be back then because of only 1 sub. 2 more McCall types in that 81' squad, we'd have been home and hosed with the Treble.

Trevor Whymark would have been exceptional playing the Hirst role, too. The only player from the 1981 team who wouldn't fit into today's team, ridiculous though it seems to say it, is Arnold Muhren. Not exactly a pressing, high work-rate, midfielder! Thijssen would have been able to play the central or right sided Number 10 role, but Wark or Gates would be better fits.

Anyhow, my first thought beyond the obvious was Burley. So I agree with Keno’s assessment (heaven help me ). He was a quality marauding right back with a superb engine and great cross (Burley, not Keno). Very much a Leif equivalent on the right.
