I think Woolfenden thought if he could hold Lowe up, which he did to a degree, then Clarke would come in and support. I wondered why, at the time, Woolfenden seemed to animated towards Clarke after the goal and, watching back, I sort of get why.

He struggled with Lowe today but that wasn't good enough from him at the death. Lowe clearly had the edge on Woolfenden in terms of pace - Clarke needed to be racing back to lend a hand.

Both Clarke and Burgess were slow getting back for that - I think that's something McKenna will be pointing out to them...

He didnt put it in late on when he should have, gettting back in. Its a flaw which KM will doubtless raise with him. Broadhead was culprit for first goal tbh. The player who crossed was alone because Broadhead didnt track him. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

He doesn’t do himself any favours when he ball watches like that for their second goal does he. But given he was pretty much a big favourite last season it’s odd that he cops so much criticism this season

Clarke was brilliant for us last season but I'd argue he, above everyone, has struggled to adjust to the Championship. Which is slightly odd considering he has Championship experience behind him. Having Williams give us a stronger, more prepared option, at right back doesn't help him either.

A very rare mistake from Woolfie but sometimes attackers beat defenders. Clarke really has to get back to cover but it looks like he assumed Woolfie would win the ball. But all in all both Woolfie and Clarke had good games. [Post edited 11 Nov 2023 22:37]

I'm hoping that, if Woolfenden knew Clarke wouldn't get back, that he would have fouled Lowe.

Highlights from SKY ....but on 19:35 - Nov 11 by BarcaBlue | That's how I remember it. We were doubling up on Lowe all game and failed for the goal. Clarke needed to get across to stop him getting clear of Woolfie and clear on goal. Not sure if Burgess could have got across more quickly too to protect Hladky. |
hmmm, I know it's sacrilege to criticise Wolfy but this was a classic case of casual, must not look flustered Wolfy. He simply had to be strong and see that into the channel or take the fella out. Certainly not trot alongside him as he dances into the box. Infuriating.

I think he was hoping to keep him out wide, or at least hold him up, but Lowe's pace did him. I do think he should have just fouled him early on, though believe he thought Clarke would be there to provide support.

Highlights from SKY ....but on 20:47 - Nov 11 by pointofblue | I do not know why Woolfenden didn't foul Lowe. Pull him back, stop the attack, let us regroup. I had to check whether he was booked and he hadn't been. I suppose he did get a toe on the ball but not enough to get it away from Lowe. As for Clarke, just trotting back, doing sod all of use... |
For all the hype that surrounds Woolfenden, you have to say he is quite poor defensively... People moaned about him getting dropped against Rotherham for Tuanzebe, he was dropped as he wouldn't have stood up well against the more physical approach of Rotherham... Their 2nd goal didn't cover Wolfie in glory, I think it's fair to say...
Highlights from SKY ....but on 09:29 - Nov 12 with 876 views | OldFart71 | Great to get another three points, but one day we will go a goal down and not recover. Also we have been giving sloppy goals away for several matches now. For me Baggott should be given a run out, all he has had so far is a cameo role against Palace where I thought he looked very composed and calm on the ball. Clarke is getting skinned quite a bit as well. We look vulnerable behind both fullbacks. I don't think Burley and Mills got caught out quite as often as Davis and Clarke do although they were both attacking fullbacks, mind you they did have Hunter and Beattie behind them.

Clarke stopped running back, looked up though to himself, 'nah, Wolfie has got that' and only started running again once Lowe went past Wolfie. But why Wolfie didn't just foul him outside the box I will never understand, not DGSO in anyway shape or form, yellow card for the team.

Perhaps, had he fouled him, we would all be criticising giving away a free kick in a dangerous crossing position when he could have just shadowed him and Clarke would have covered. Whatever it was, there was a series of errors from at least two players and it didn't look good. More worryingly, it wasn't the only chance that the 10 men created against us and suggests that several of our players seemed to relax at the thought the game was won. However, I am sure McKenna won't let anyone think those things are acceptable. Despite clear faults, we are as good as Leicester right now. Everyone believes Leicester are far too good for this league. Would it be better if there was nothing to improve on? Or is it better if we improve on being too good for this league? Happy days! Enjoy where we are and trust McKenna to continue to improve us! I am really looking forward to the rest of this season and next season too. I don't get those who are expressing fear at what we will be if we go up. I am excited!

"More worryingly, it wasn't the only chance that the 10 men created against us and suggests that several of our players seemed to relax at the thought the game was won. " I think thats what McKenna was referring to when he talked about 'our humility'. 3-1 up, 10 men, there's no way this lot are coming back from that, and we backed off, let them have the ball, took a breather. Basically, we stopped working, thats not allowed to happen in a McKenna side.

I'm wondering if there was a little residual effect from the virus going around. Normally Woolfenden will go shoulder to shoulder, but he looked like is legs had gone and allowed Lowe to get past him - not like him at all. I think he then just assumed he would have help from the inside which Clarke should have offered.

I agree it's completely over the top to say Wolfie is not good defensively. He's been out best CB for a year + I'm shocked how Clarke is getting more grief (or at least as much as Wolfie for that 3rd though). It was really really poor from him. Tuanzebe just doesn't get beaten by Lowe there (he's quicker and stronger). That is going to be in McKenna's mind and Wolfie needs to realize his place is not going to be guaranteed. All said and done though if Wolfie shows the right attitude and desire to get even better he has the tools to play in prem.

Tuanzebe is a better defender than Wolf though and wouldn't have got beaten the way Wolf did for their 2nd goal... Simple as that.. whatever way you look at it, Wolfie got skinned by Lowe, Lowe scored... That's poor defending, not nonsense..
