Take the point about the sports facilities, although sun-wise it's not much warmer than, for e.g., Morocco, Egypt, Canary Islands, Cape Verde, all of which are similarly practicable to get to and have a short holiday in. [Post edited 16 Nov 2023 11:54]

It's just luxury, you know the hotel is going to be 5*+, the food is going to be great, the weather is going to be great, and for what the purpose of this break is you don't need to take a risk on anything - being heavily westernised, fake and superficial is what is needed. Also for those going with kids as well you know it is going to be easy.

I was going to mention that you appear to have a follower, noticed it in another thread. Has our old friend Benters returned?

An odd glitch in the site's software last night (when I clicked on one of VG's old posts it actually linked me through to his original username, perhaps something to do with the delay in showing when avatars are changed) revealed that it isn't him, though I originally thought it was due to name. Must have been a temp. glitch as it was gone after the maintenance work.

Bit sad that someone with an old grudge feels the need to spend time venting in that way, but if it makes them feel better, then happy to help!

I did suspect that 'Village Green' was too subtle a comeback for Benters (who would have been a bit less personal and a bit more issue driven in his down votes too I reckon, hardly ever agreed with that poster but they were consistent in their views however mistaken they were.)

I've had a brief layover there, but it's absolutely never appealed to me as somewhere for a longer holiday. All their advertising seems to emphasise is shopping, shiny high rises, luxury this and that, not for me. You're also holidaying in a place that's built on massive systemic labour abuses, where the vast majority of people working there are second-tier citizens.

For me, I'd say almost any other place on the planet carries greater depth of interest.

People obviously go way OTT with it, can understand why people wouldn't want to go there but objectively it's a good holiday destination where lots can be done and you'd struggle to have a bad time there.

It doesn't mean it's everyones cup of tea.

There are certain destinations I just wouldn't have any interest in going for a variety of reasons but I can see why they appeal but just make no appeal to me so wouldn't claim it is a dreadful destination

I think when anyone says somewhere is dreadful they're expressing an opinion rather than stating a fact (unless they're talking about Luton). I see literally zero appeal in somewhere like Dubai and it represents something rather disgusting, imo, in the way that it's built on exploitative labour practices and is essentially consumerism on steroids. It's very close to the bottom of the list of places I'd want to visit (just above Luton). That's not from a place of jealousy, I could afford to go to Dubai, but I see no reason why I'd want to go there. I appreciate it is some people's cup of tea, each to their own I guess.

I've been to Dubai, I had a great time tbh, but you have to take it for what it is. It's new and shiny and won't satisfy a craving for culture in that respect like an ancient city and such like, but variety is the spice of life. I like going to different places and trying new things when I can, even if they're not typically the environments I would choose to live in. Vegas is the same, very much Disney land for adults, but the sheer exuberance and ridiculousness of the place makes it somewhere worth visiting IMO. Not somewhere I would hurry back to for a fortnight with the family though.

Dubai is nowhere near the top of my list, not even close, I'd much rather spend a weekend pottering around the peak district myself given an either / or, but as a change and an experience it's an interesting place to visit.
