Interesting, had thought if we looked for another LB it would be someone who is more a LWB by trade given what McKenna asks from that position.

Meant underwhelming on the face of it in terms of a 33-year-old jobber from Wednesday - am fine with the signing if it happens!

Yep, it's not one to set pulses racing, but probably improves the squad and clear that Williams going to see loan cut short soon.

reading this MA interview from November where he preliminarily discusses the Jan window - https://www.eadt.co.uk/sport/23922181.ipswich-town-mark-ashton-january-transfer-

couple quotes to note: "We’ll be brave and we’ll be bold, but we won’t be reckless." and "....we’ll now have more firepower to go again in January" and "We recruit the best players we possibly can in every single window"

is a 33 year old left back/left winger who's been in league 1 for the previous 3+ years really brave/bold, the best player we can get in, and a display of more firepower?

a million quid (so says the rumour mill), another position in the squad registration taken up

underwhelmed and disappointed

Just heard on talkSPORT that the bid of 1 million was rejected as he’s worth more than that apparently can’t see us paying anymore than a million even though that seems rather a lot for a 33yo.

It amazes me that people still don't understand that different players suit different managers and with proper coaching they could be a lot better for us than they have been previously.

McKenna repeatedly mentions attributes and then he works with them to help them work in our system.

Even before McKenna we signed loads of players who looked uninspiring at first glance who proved to be very good signings.

Exactly. So many players who have done well for us came from a club where they were not particularly valued, or thought of as rubbish. Alternatively, we have also had many players we thought were rubbish but have then gone on to do great things with other clubs!

You would think people would have learned by now to not judge players too harshly on their history.

A lot of bed wetting on this thread. We've seen how compromised we've looked lately in Davis' absence. Shoehorning Clarke on the left doesn't work, and as much as Humphreys is a bright young player it's a lot to ask of him.

Hopefully Davis stays fit as we saw again on Saturday how much he brings, but signing an experienced, versatile, attacking full back who can cover Davis isn't the worst bit of business. And I very much doubt he'll be costing a million.

It's not an either / or with a new forward. It is possible to work on deals concurrently.

I wonder if the 'total value' of the offer is £1m?

I.e. £250k up front and £750k in possible promotion-related bonuses?

Something like that I could get on board with. But £1m up front would be madness.

We won't be £1m desperate to sign a player who will predominantly sit on the bench behind our best player.

There's no way we are paying £1m for a 33yr old who is at best cover.

We pay that sort of fee for people like Davis & Broadhead who can improve.

It’s not easy bringing in someone of top quality to sit on the bench. Sounds like we’re going for solid and stable cover. Humphries to go on loan?

The only way it ends up costing £1m for him is if we are in the Premier League next season and if that is the case then it will have been worth it - everyone now whilst we plead FFP poverty will be after a big promotion top up and who can blame them

Not surprising though is it, If it were some 25/26 year old, im sure most would be quite pleased. The age is always a downer if it's over 30, just a natural reaction within football tbh.

Looking at Joe's stat graphs, the comparison between he and Davis is ridiculously perfect, So i'm in the 'welcome' camp.

respectfully i think this is a daft comment somewhat. given that im just a fan who goes to the games i have no access to the statistical or recruitment analysis available to those involved in transfers & player identification at itfc

I was only pointing out the juxtaposition between what was said versus what the reality appears to be. Wasn't intending to be overly negative (apols if it read that way) and of course i trust in KMac & the team behind him, but i think it is a valid point to note? if you chief exec continues to hammer the drum of relentless transfer activity & bigs up the firepower, it surely begs the question 'how does that translate into signing a 33 year old who was just recently banished & has a track record of c. 3 seasons at championship level in his career & the rest is lower/non-league & scottish football?

TBH it's exactly how we need to go into these negotiations. We're not gonna compete with unfront fee's in this league, it's got to be about promotion top ups.

As you say - could only imagine this being anywhere near a million if there's a significant bonus built in for promotion with a relatively low initial figure.

It would be worth the future pay out if it means it gets us over the line.

I would say this is fullback cover and a bit makeshift on probably a two year contract ? Williams going back to Utd. The market appears to be full of teams all after the same or similar players. Unless we are prepared to break the bank the centre forward position may go on another loan.

Well it shouldn't be. There's always a place for a balance between youth and experience. Burnley won this division last season thanks in a large part to the contributions of players like Barnes, Rodriguez, Cork etc. Especially if we're not talking about a player who is going to be asked to play 95 minutes 46 times a season.

I'll be happy to see it if it happens. Probably spells the end of Wiliams, I would rather invest his wages on someone who will (hopefully) be available for selection.

It translates pretty perfectly if you are looking for fairly short-term cover who can broadly replicate what the incumbent offers and help push you over the line. This would hardly be a flagship signing, just a solid one for the squad, and that's fine.

Are we really thinking of splashing £1m+ on a 33 year old squad back up?

It's literally burning money. Unless, as has been intimated that 80% of that is dependent on PL football next season. In which case no one will care.
