Blue Card = 10 minute sin bin 17:20 - Feb 8 with 4529 viewsCharlie_pl_baxter

IFAB are trialling blue cards for dissent and "cynical" fouls. Will be a ten minute sin bin. Not at the professional level to begin with but planning to go throughout the game.

Personally I like it, hopefully they extend to all unsportsmanlike conduct including obvious dives.

Great idea,
Oops forgot most Refs don't even award the yellow card or give us a penalty for clear cut infringements So not sure what advantage this would give us

Sin bins have been mandatory for dissent in all competitions up to step 5 (Thurlow Nunn Prem) for a few years now. Incidents of dissent have dropped as a result.

Fair enough. Thurlow nunn prem refs are probably a lot more professional than sutherland shire o35s div 7.

Sounds a terrible idea to me, what problem is it exactly solving ? Why should a cynical foul only be a ten minute sin bin and not a yellow card meaning another cynical foul means you're off the pitch.

I believe a yellow on top of a blue or vice versa would still be a red

I'm not sure what the answer is, but I would argue that something does need to change. At the moment, yellow cards are given out for too wide a variety of things. It can be a cynical foul, a really bad tackle, moaning at the ref, taking your shirt off... Unless you get two in the same game, it doesn't provide any upper hand to your opponent, but if you get a few in a few games, it benefits your next opponent in the form of your suspension, even if an offence hasn't been committed against them.

The football federations are fast becoming like our actual government, employing people with a specific purpose to fix the game, but in order to justify being employed forcing changes that nobody wants to make it look like they're doing something.

There are cameras at every single game, certainly Prem and Champ, why not just apply retrospective bans from video evidence if they're that hellbent on implementing change. The culture will soon stop, but don't change the spectacle.

Just another move that makes the game more about officials rather than players, managers and fans. I have no idea why we seem to be wanting to move the game towards seeing more 11 v 10 than 11 v 11.

Don't like it. Unnecessarily complicates things. Football used to be such a simple game.

Even more margin for error and endless TV studio analysis and criticism over decisions.

Players more likely to commit fouls, gamesmanship etc knowing they can get back on the pitch in 10 mins.

If players and teams cannot see the yellow/red card system as a deterrent, this is giving them even more rope. Players still remove their shirts knowing its an instant yellow even now.

It has the opposite effect. It replaces some instances where the player would receive a yellow (and stay on the pitch) rather than a red. So they’d have to leave the their team short for 10 mins. Accumulating blue cards still results in a red, same as yellows. It’s been an effective deterrent in lower echelons of non-league for a few years now. Battle tested and proven.

The most important thing that came out of the UEFA meeting was England were the only Country to vote against a decision to allow the current incumbent to stay in as President for another 4 years without the need to seek re-election.

What problem is this trying to solve?

Dissent? Cynical fouls? Time-wasting?

Apply the laws as now and stop all this "too early to give a yellow"/reluctance to give a second yellow (particularly to time-wasting goalkeepers where the first such card seems to take an age) rubbish.

If the laws were applied correctly and consistently it may be mayhem for the first couple of months of the season with many sendings off maybe even abandoned games but players would learn.

Book them! Book them all!

11 v 10 for 85 minutes is a greater advantage than 11 v 10 for 10 minutes.

Why this is a priority to sort out over having a sensible protocol for head injury assessments with temporary substitutes is anyone's guess - such an easy win that could be sorted immediately - but here we are with blue cards...

I quite like it, but I also think it might be better if introduced with a stopping clock. If you were to introduce a clock that is stopped at relevant times (injuries, substitutes walking off, goals etc) then there would be no reason for teams to time waste during the 10 minutes of cooling off as they would not get the player on any sooner.

You could take it further:
- Introduce a set time for goal kicks with a count down clock - if you exceed the allowed time you concede a corner
- same for throw ins, with the throw reversing if you take more than 15 seconds to get it in (JD might struggle there)
- if the team that has the advantage during that 10 minutes scores, the team with the man off is allowed him back on again immediately (ice hockey style)
- repeated fouling by a team, rather than an individual, leading to a blue carding after a warning by the ref

Phil and Gav should initiate a blue card/sin bin on here.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

The trial for concussion protocols has already begun so they've already prioritised that over the as yet unstarted trial for blue cards - https://www.theifab.com/trials/concussion-substitutes/
