Imagine thinking that leaving the D Day event early, so that you can get on the TV do do an interview about not being a liar, and not considering just how bad that looks?

I thought it was pretty cheap announcing the veteran rail card as well. Just shut your mouth and stop campaigning for a day then announce it tomorrow.

You’d have thought that not only would he want to be at the DDay anniversary, that he’d have thought it an honour and a privilege to be there.

But no, when it comes down to it he couldn’t give a monkeys. Not interested. Probably doesn’t know anything about it other than what’s a flunky gave him on a bit of paper.

Useless, unpleasant little man.

I’m old enough to remember the outrage at a Michael Foot wearing what the press referred to as a Donkey jacket at the cenotaph in 1981. He was portrayed as disloyal and disrespectful of those who died in the war.

Now magnify that by 1,000,000. Wouldn’t be surprised if there aren’t calls within the Tory party for him to resign as leader. Either way, he’ll be on the six o’clock news tonight offering a. Humble apology but this is going to follow him around the campaign. Farage will be all over it.

The disrespect is compounded by him spending the entire interview repeating a lie and lying about it being a lie despite claiming he wouldn't lie. The guy is a joke, pathetic little weasel who is completely out of touch. Imagine leaving the D-Day commemoration to do THAT interview.

Plenty of time left, but am starting to think a Tory party in double figures is a real possibility if they keep on with the current level of campaigning.

So not just Hunt but MPs like Coffey could be ditched, which would be very welcome.

"The Queen Mother came up to him at the Foreign Office after the ceremony and said, 'Oh, hello, Michael. That's a smart sensible coat for a day like this.' Foot later reflected to a Guardian journalist: 'Which it was, and d'you know, I'd far rather take the Queen Mother's opinion than that dreadful woman Thatcher's."

Indeed. But that wasn’t how the press portrayed it at the time. And it stuck with him. As I said, now magnify that by 1,000,000.

Taking aside the utter disrespect shown for our veterans and those who died, it’s politically suicidal.

Which is why it was a dopey choice of coat, given that even then perception was all important.

Such an intelligent man, I don’t think Michael Foot paid much attention to sartorial elegance and certainly meant nothing by it. But it did stick with him.

This will stick with Sunak for the little time the runt has left and deservedly so. Foot’s dress error is nothing to Sunak prioritising electioneering over the DDay anniversary.

It really annoys me how Tories hijack the war dead and call back to it as if they somehow own it. Likewise the boomers who act like they fought and not their parents etc.

Then things like this show how tawdry and insincere that sentiment is.

Interestingly though, Foot was in no way a pacifist and indeed co-wrote the 1940 polemic against appeasement of Hitler, Guilty Men, under a pseudonym.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guilty_Men

Guilty Men was written by three journalists: Michael Foot (a future leader of the Labour Party), Frank Owen (a former Liberal MP), and Peter Howard (a Conservative). They believed that Britain had suffered a succession of bad leaders who, with junior ministers, advisers and officials, had conducted a disastrous foreign policy towards Germany and had failed to prepare the country for war. After Victor Gollancz, creator of the Left Book Club, had been persuaded to publish the book, the authors divided the 24 chapters among themselves and wrote it in four days, finishing on 5 June 1940. Gollancz asked for some of the rhetoric to be toned down, fearing the reaction it might provoke, but he rushed it into print in four weeks.

It was under a pseudonym because the writers were employed by Lord Beaverbrook, who barred his journalists from writing for publications other than his own. Beaverbrook, who was active in the Conservative Party, was also a vocal supporter of appeasement.

As Michael Caine might say, "not a lot of people know that".

EDIT: And to confirm his non-pacifism, there's this from Wikipedia.

At the outbreak of the Second World War, Foot volunteered for military service, but was rejected because of his chronic asthma.

I'm starting to think quite positively about Theresa May's 2017 campaign.

She got battered for proposing a policy that would cap care home costs and protect people's homes.

Rejected by the media and voters alike we now have no cap and could all face costs of around £75k a year for care.

Sometimes our politics is utterly bewildering.
