Southgate's cunning plan 21:32 - Jun 7 with 2575 views | Bluesky | To lure the rest of Europe into thinking we are a pedestrian, unimaginative team with no penetration and then on the day suddenly unleash a team of eleven brilliant, inspired, cohesive superstars that knifes its way to the trophy without losing a game. Please tell me I'm right....

Not even a fit left back at that too isn't it. It's laughable tbh. If we heard that France had 1 unfit left back in their squad whilst they had 1 available who'd had 21 assists this season you'd be laughing they ignored him.

Southgate's cunning plan on 22:02 - Jun 7 with 2310 views | RobTheMonk | No plan B. The great thing about McKenna is that his team are quite happy to hit a long ball into Hirst or Moore last season if needed. Also the set pieces are piss poor. How many times have we got Chappers, more often than not the smallest player on the pitch, into space and on the end of corners and free kicks. The England corners just seem to be put it in and hope for the best. Bellingham will at least offer some running power. Think it will be Gallagher and Rice with Bellingham just ahead.
Southgate's cunning plan on 22:06 - Jun 7 with 2286 views | cressi | Said lots of time this side will win nothing with Southgate in charge he threw away the Croatia and Italy games a little unlucky v France his a defence minded manager who's inept. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Southgate's cunning plan on 22:10 - Jun 7 with 2275 views | Oldsmoker | Have you never watched England before? The only competition where we actually played proper football that excited the fans and scared the sh*t out of the opposition was Euro 1996 with El Tel as our manager. Since then, players have been forced to play a style which strangles their skills and subdues their performance into an unwatchable boring snore-fest. I wish we could play Keegan-style, score more goals than them approach and go out in a blaze of glory rather than a whimper.

Southgate? I know England getting to a final/semi final will be raised, but I still don’t rate him.

Indeed - England achieved that in spite of Southgate, not because of him. There’s some incredible talent there, even Steve Bruce could have got that team to a final (with some nations like Germany having their weakest team in decades I might add).

Yep. Utterly irrelevant. I couldn’t care less how England do, so my observations come from a neutral place I hope. Plenty of the bigger teams have had poor pre-tournament warmups, and even slow starts to the tournament. I wonder if the better teams see these types of games as beneath them, even if subconsciously. It’s not worth worrying about. It only matters in the competition, and even then the only first goal is to get through the group stages. I’m sure England will be fine.

Southgate's cunning plan on 00:49 - Jun 8 with 1912 views | itfcsuth | Really poor display from England. Incredibly dull display is the only way to describe. The constant slow build up in a U shape in front Iceland was perfect for them, it’s what they wanted, they couldn’t be hurt like that. It seems Southgate is absolutely desperate to copy and paste the Pep playbook.

Totally agree. The first England tournament I remember was Spain ‘82. And in all the years since, even the ones under the wonderful Sir Bobby, I don’t ever remember feeling comfortable. The Italia 90 semi-final is still one of the best games of football I’ve ever seen England play, but up until that game we were VERY fortunate against Belgium, Cameroon and many others. The default feeling heading into any major tournament has to be one of tortured anxiety.
Southgate's cunning plan on 07:45 - Jun 8 with 1667 views | franz_tyson | I get it with Southgate in that he's a decent bloke who plays the media well and can handle a bunch of very talented players. But I have little faith in him as a coach. But, again, I go back to his record ( which I think is pretty decent in tournaments). But, then again, should he be getting more out of this group of players? Probably, but even very talented coaches of the highest level couldn't deal with this job and the media. I truly think if Southgate was to manage in the PL he would be shown up as to be very mediocre. I would sh1tting myself if he was appointed as Town boss. I just think if England do well under him its pretty much down to the quality of the players and very little to do with the tactics or coaching. It's up to Southgate to be a focal point and to keep a group of players happy. [Post edited 8 Jun 2024 7:46]

We always do this ahead of a tournament - fire up on 09:46 - Jun 8 with 1478 views | unstableblue | Get the press and England fans fired up through moaning! What I saw was 11 very gifted players, against two banks of very deep defending Icelanders, who still hadn’t fully gelled or found their patterns of play. If they can gel, get a system right, and if Serbia and Slovenia try and play out a bit, we may do well. Our group allows us to bed the new team in. But as always there are no easy games at international tournament. Walker and Trippier looked good.

He's managed a PL team, despite not having the coaching qualifications at the time and required special dispensation for it, and he was rubbish at it and got sacked. He then did nothing for a few years before ending up as the England U21 manager wasn't that successful but was just seen as safe pair of hands. So just happened to be "available" after the FA had mucked up following Hodgson resigning, after losing to Iceland, appointing Allardyce (why in god's name).who then had to resign Even then he was only in temporary charge as a safe pair of hands again. But the FA realised there weren't better options available so gave him the job permanently. All of the success the team has had, has been due to incredibly fortunate draws in competitions, and a qualification system that now completely favours teams like England and guarantees them qualification. Like you really have to screw up qualifying for major tournaments now. Southgate is the same manager he always was, a bit rubbish but just a safe pair of hands no scandals, he hasn't progressed as an individual and certainly hasn't progressed any player he has picked for the squad
