I'm not sure what the game plan was for the ast 20 minutes. Seemed happy to let them have ball and as much time and space as they wanted.

Same old Soutgate, what a waste of another tournament. Germans, Spanish and Italians have nothing to fear from this England team.

It has been a really drab game this one. Ten shots in total from both teams. Barely a chance of note all night.

It's not like watching Ipswich is it?

We've been spoilt over the past couple of years with the quality and excitement (and for those who can't get to live games all that often, quantity) of football. Certainly less excited watching England do well and less frustrated when we've given the ball away or decisions go against us

Yeah that second half was bad tbf. Total lack of inspiration and cohesion. No plan when we were under pressure.

Pretty uninspiring sums it up for me! Serbia battled well and if they had some quality forwards!

What is Southgate trying to do with this team? I don't seen any identity or plan at all. Far too deep not able to get their quality up the field. Does Kane suit that style of play?

A lot more questions to be asked than really there should have been. Attacking free kick in the Serbian half and no one up just played back.

Anyway a win...need to improve massively.

So negative and dull. Compare this to how Germany, Spain and Itally played, They were all solidly playing on the front foot,

We played Serbia who were little better than Scotland - and that’s a low bar. And Serbia deserved a draw. Says it all for me.

Watching Southgate’s team reminds me a bit of watching Mick’s teams. Every point a prisoner: what we have we hold. The difference is MM had little choice with the players he had. Southgate has some really good players at his disposal. One or two world class.

The defence? Not so good. So let’s play defensively for over an hour against a side that wouldn’t trouble Norwich in a league game. Ok, I’m pushing it, but you get the drift.

England may be well short of France and half a dozen others. That’s ok, but surely we are better than this?

I reckon Foden could have an impact from the bench too.

Well, he certainly didn't from the start tonight.

England are no Ipswich, and Southgate’s no KM is he.

We’ve come to expect so much better, particularly with attacking substitutions.

I thought first half we were OK, good enough Serbia were forced into a defensive change. Saka had his full back on toast. A shame we didn't push on. Worth noting that's Bellingham's first game since the champions league final. Take the win and move on.

Southgate has reached that stage where he'll be damned if he does or doesn't win it. If doesn't people will say told you so he's useless. If he does win, people will say he got lucky.

He's reached the same stage as Robson did at England with the Robson haters. The old 'he doesn't have a clue' 'always picks the same team, 'afraid to drop his favourites', 'no plan B' etc etc

Just buckle up and not concede good chances to get out of there with a win when not quite at it - think it will end up being picked apart a bit much because ultimately Pickford makes one save in the game.

People miss the fact Serbia were really restricted to a solitary shot, obviously if that goes in but it didn't. Kane missed a glorious chance second half which would have made it much more comfortable.

I know that somehow Kane bags goals, but is the man able to run? All I see from him is a slow jog. Not exactly equipped for the press is he? Wouldn't get into a McKenna team like that.

It also get picked apart because it was turgid viewing. The first dull match of the tournament. The comparison with the other top teams who have played fast, attacking, fearless football in their opening games was stark.

Let's England move up a notch or two and this game gets quickly forgotten.

I noticed on BBC comments somebody said that Kane when he attempts to run looks like he’s hauling a truck tyre. I laughed.

Yes, Kane scored a lot of goals in the German league. Is he good enough for international football now? Would Watkins or somebody offer more? Possibly but Kane has to stay in the side for now and with some sort of service he will score goals.

First games are always a bit nervy (we'd only won 1 in 10 at the Euros apparently) so I'm going to cut England some slack despite it being an underwhelming performance to say the least. My worry is too many square pegs in round holes, especially the whole left side containing no specialist left sided players. Foden is most effective as a 10 or cutting in from the right and he looked completely lost last night, you can see he's a confidence player as he was misplacing short passes he usually makes in his sleep. Trippier offered no threat going forward on that side either, which made us quite predictable. Trent is not a CM for me, I know he's played there at times for Liverpool but he wasn't great in there last night and I'd rather go with Mainoo or Wharton despite their lack of experience, they are at least specialist CMs. Bellingham and Saka were very good and that's because they were in their natural roles and looked comfortable. Even Kane looks like he's being asked to rein in some of his natural instincts to drop in and link up play and he ended up being a bit of a passenger. The squad has bags of talent but also a lot of quite new players and it's not well balanced across the pitch. Hopefully we'll grow into it now we've got that one out of the way.

From the key Athletic article this morning, Bellingham states:

—————————————
It was put to him in the post-match news conference that, while the first half against Serbia had shown why England are among the favourites to win Euro 2024, the second half had shown the shortcomings that might ultimately be their undoing.

“I don’t really agree with that,” said the 20-year-old, England’s goalscorer in their 1-0 victory in Gelsenkirchen. “The first half shows why we can score goals against any team and the second half shows why we can keep a clean sheet against any team.”

Bellingham said there was “always a negative theme” in terms of public and media reaction to England’s performances — “and sometimes rightly so” — but he preferred to accentuate the positive.

They had to “hold on at times and suffer a little bit” in the second half at the Veltins-Arena, he said, but they had won the game. And “this team is still new”, he added, “gelling together with every game”.
————————————————

I agree with his view, and the gel word is key - albeit you could say a lot of the team have played together for some time. But the reference is to Trent and the defence. I’d stick with Trent, allows Walker to bomb on with good defensive cover behind and provides great crossing and set pieces.

I think wider message in the Athletic was the now familiar drop off in the second half. Has happened in a lot of games and tournaments now… start fast, look impressive, go deep second half

I think it was a shame Walker didn’t put his chance away… game would have been different

I still have faith in the quality of the team. And the new centre back paring looked good. Which is a massive plus.

Denmark will be a different proposition. And a full on England performance will settle nerves and concerns in the media and amongst fans.

The concern for me is Foden is still not delivering. If you had both him and Saka threatening down both flanks we’d be frightening.

The point is that, whether the team is new or not, the shortcomings are the same ones which have cost us previously under southgate. An entirely passive approach when the momentum shifts, and unwillingness to wrest it back, to play on the front foot etc. Poor and late (if at all) use of substitutes with potential to change the game despite clearly being under the cosh.

As for Foden, perhaps not his fault. He is being asked to do a Broadhead role, tucked in, finding pockets, in a game where we conceded posession for most of the second half and sat deep, and where he had no left footed full back to work with, or go past him and create space. Add to that, that he is a 10 rather than a wide man....

Southgate needs to have the balls to play the best team, not just the best players. Foden offers nothing as a left sided forward, in this team. He either plays 10 with bellingham dropped into midfield proper, or a left sided attacker takes the spot.

Germany were fortunate to be playing Scotland, whereas Serbia were very physical and made their presence known. Let's see how we do against Denmark, who won't be battering us and defending in the same numbers. I imagine we will be able to attack with more freedom.

The individual quality will probably see us through, but it’s far from a team performance. Picford’x driving me nuts. It’s kick and run schoolboy stuff.

Decent save from Kane there. Although did I hear that right? He only had 1 touch in the first half? That horrendous

To be fair, it was two touches.
