Really, really getting fed up with this at the moment. It's clear we've got a couple of groups of posters who don't particularly like one another and threads are deliberately derailed and ultimately turned into rows. I've just removed a thread which was in no way offensive, which was mocked and belittled for no good reason other than a handful of posters don't like the poster who started the thread. The Forum can't really run like that, posters have to rub along together regardless of whether they get along. Perhaps there can be an end to the animosity and sniping or posters, some of whom are very long term posters, will no longer be welcome.

I know all of them yes. James Holland, Al Murray, Tom Holland, Peter Caddick-Adams, all those guys are mates of mine.

I can't make it this year, but there a few guys on here who'll be going I think?

Loved your pods with James recently on Bluecoat and the Sherwood Rangers, especially the stuff about Galvin's destroyed tank being moved along the lane....

Tom Holland has been excellent in highlighting contemporary antisemitism imo. Although I was disappointed to find out he wasn’t Spider Man.

It's REALLY hard to resist the urge to downvote this.

Go on, do it. I don't have time to give you 300 uppies so you'll have to engage in a down vote war. You have so much more to lose because I come from a position of low popularity.

I think down-voting breeds toxicity on this site and think it should be done away with.

Followed by………

The last time I got downvoted I retaliated by downvoting about 5 of the poster's previous comments irrespective of the content.

Is very Alanis Morissette

And what was the very next sentence?

"A couple of months ago, Ryorry downvoted me for some reason and I was feeling generous and UPvoted her previous 300 posts. It was good because then there was a period of mutual upvoting for about three weeks."

And this is the problem when you take comments out of context or disregard other moderating language from a post.

The point of my post is that downvoting is designed to create a reaction and it's always negative by its very nature. My point was to say I don't give a stuff about whether I'm downvoted or not, but let's see if you like a dose of your own medicine.

To your credit GB you downvote very infrequently, it appears.

Final opinion from me here... I honestly don't think TWTD is that bad for the sniping and fighting. As far as internet forums and discussions go I think it's pretty good. As for up and down votes, these work best if we just treat it as a bit of fun rather than something to hang your happiness on.

I may have downvoted Bloots, but can't say for sure. It seems odd that I would have downvoted him for saying that KMcM was staying as I was in no doubt at all that he would.

Well I knew someone had *down*voted me by 300 in a single night a couple of months ago …

Did notice about 10 uppies from you at the time you mention, considered asking you to stop as I didn’t know why you were doing it, & was starting to get embarrassed!

Thanks,

It seems to me you have to deal with much more passive-aggessiveness than I do. Actual Nazis are easy to spot, but TWTD has lots of quite nasty bullying that masquerades as sarcasm and banter. There is a vindictiveness here among some people that as I said before, is scary.

BTW, there are quite a few WWII historians and authors who are Ipswich fans. We have enough that we are thinking about hiring a box or hospitality suite for a game this season. So we can talk about WW2 and football together. I live in Normandy and if I am lucky get to a game or two a season

Nope not having that.

‘TWTD has lots of quite nasty bullying that masquerades as sarcasm and banter. There is a vindictiveness here among some people that as I said before, is scary’

The trouble is people take stuff too seriously, most of the quips/snipes are old/long running jokes.

That's interesting re the number of Town supporters in the WWII historian community. I know one or two medievalists who are Blues fans via my wife's work.

Not the first time it’s happened either, same thing twice before, years ago. One was a short-lived political poster, possibly an alt account; other probably the same person as this time.

Think I know who (no longer on here as ‘themselves’), but can’t be certain since, as you correctly thought, they applied them to ancient posts to avoid drawing attention.

I think there's a bit of both. There can be some nastiness but also posts aren't always taken in the spirit in which they are intended and there are long-running jokes and quips which might be seen as unpleasantness from the outside.

Not having that either. Just because people haven’t seen some real toxicity that’s gone on (often because it’s quickly deleted by Phil) doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

That is probably true.

Give it an hour and we'll all be having a polite chat about deep space.

Well, you mention discussions of deep space and I was finishing off the data for an image of Messier 16 last night. M16 is better known as the Eagle Nebula and in the centre it contains the "Pillars of Creation" from the famous Hubble image.

If you click on the image you'll get a higher resolution version. It's worth zooming in on the pillars.
