Your top five Ipswich goalkeepers 07:45 - Jul 4 with 5574 viewsChurchman

This is purely on a ‘playground pick’ basis in order, not on stats, divisions etc.

1. Richard Wright
2. Kelvin Davis
3. Bartosz Bialkowski
4. Paul Cooper
5. Craig Forrest (he was kind to my mum too - in Sainsburys getting a box of cornflakes down from the top shelf!)

Bart over Cooper? That's blasphemy, I wouldn't put Bart in the top 5 personally.

I’m sorry, but Paul Cooper easily tops that list. Played for years for a Town side at the very top of English and European football. Very underrated and a so called ‘weak link’, but was the supporters player of the season in 1981.

Oh there’s no logic to it, just gut instinct - and a bit of blasphemy!

Loach was never a great for us, but I have to admit he was one of the best at penalty saves. So I will buy him a participation curly whirly.

I loved Richard Wright but I have to admit I always felt differently after the horrific injury to Luca Nilis. It wasn't Wrighty's fault at all, but that sound will never leave my memory - I almost threw up. (Of course I was right behind the goal where it happened)

When Craig Forrest brought down the box of cornflakes did he roll on the ground a few times before giving them to your mum?

Strange how football evolves - great in the 70s and 80s but probably wouldn’t be a professional keeper nowadays as too short.

Your challenge is quite difficult, as surely a goalkeeper needs to be successful to enter any top 5. It's a hearts and minds thing.

1. Could forever be Paul Cooper; trophies, penalty saves, trying to coach Stallone.
2. Step forward - Vaclav Hladky - relevant and recent
3. Richard Wright - Wembley penalty save; real sliding doors moment, plus a relatively good season in Prem
4. Craig Forrest - the only goalkeeper in this list to win a league with Town
5. Shane Supple - for his goalkeeping and his principles

Honourable mentions;
Sivell
Fearon
Baker
Alexander
Davies
Price
Bart
Walton

He didn’t drop them!

My mum said he had nice eyes 🤮. She had no idea who he was but guessed he was a footballer from his tracksuit.

Although I did that season in the North Stand, for that game I was the other side/end using my dad’s seat for the one and only time - how lucky was that? It looked grisly from afar let alone close up. It was one of those where I think we lost in the end to Villa, but nobody was too bothered after witnessing that.

One of the vomit bag specials I remember was Phil Whelan’s ankle break when his foot wound up pointing in the wrong direction. He wasn’t a happy bunny.

Villa were on top form at the time and largely thanks to Nilis. He was a fantastic striker really and was a shame to see his career end at FPR. I never saw Phil Whelan's injury, thankfully - but yeah, stunned silence and a lot of uncomfortable fans that day. (Not as uncomfortable as Luca, mind you)

I am not sure it should make a difference that he sadly passed away but Martin Fulop comes to mind when I think of town Goalkeepers and therefore deserves a mention in this thread - was also a very good keeper

My ITFC memory goes back to about 1990, I'm sure Cooper was the best but he's before my time - however Richard Wright does trump him on England caps....

I'd do the same as this but swap Davies and Forrest around

You are right. Fulop was a terrific keeper.

Not seeing too many mentions of Andy Marshall. I’ll get my coat.

I suspect for those of a certain age Roy Bailey would be up there.

The pitch was to blame for that Whelan injury. Absolute state of it round that time. I think that was the Man U game where it bobbled over Schmeichael's foot for our goal as well.

Ken Hancock was a very good keeper for Town in the 60s IMO.

Begovic as best loan keeper? Assuming Bart doesn't count for that.

I forgot Hancock. Keeper in the Div 2 winning 68 team. Saw him play a few times but was a bit too young to notice him.

Did you know Yashin came to Ipswich? Was part of the Dynamo Moscow party which came over for Beat's testimonial.
